What do you guys think

of a way to avoid/spot/stop time wasters/tyre kickers wanting to test drive the car.

Last night took 20 pics of the car with a view to sticking some ads in a few places next week.

I am going to avoid Autotrader for the moment in a vein attempt to avoid the above, any other suggestions?

Also what do you think is the best way to approach people who want to drive the car, generally i don't have too much of an issue with this, but given the state of tune etc there is defiantly the potential for disaster.

I have finally come to terms with selling it so want to off load soon as possible but i realise it may take a good few months to find the right buyer.

Cheers.

Tough one I know.

I always let people drive the cars I sell (I wouldn't buy one of the seller wouldn't let me drive it!)

The problem is, it's a risk. If there is a "moment", then chances are, the person driving is only at best insured 3rd party - so it could b costly.

I recon you just need to have a gut reaction to someone.

If they arrive in a baz mobile with a huge exhaust, I wouldn't let them drive!

If in doubt, I would play safe - ask them to get cover for the drive - their own insurance company will probably do this for a small fee (as they do for curtosy cars etc).

Good luck! I guess it'll be a bit like selling a house!

I've only ever sold one car so probably the worst person to listen too, but:

1. Loads of high quality closeup pictures - (which you've already done)

2. A good website with all the pictures as well as the full service history and pics of all documents (blanked out in places)

3. On the test drive make sure you give it a good ragging after its fully warmed up but when it's their turn point out how nervous you are and that they should drive it more considerately as they are not used to it. If they can turn up with an insurance cover note then all the better. Alternatively call your insurers and find out how much for an 'any driver' policy for a short period.

4. Advertise it here, PP, 911&P world and all the big car forums

Cheers Paul hadnt thought about taking pics of the documents, i will hose the pics up on a site.

Probably going to put it into a couple of mags and Piston Heads first see what happens.

When I went to look at mine, the owner drove round for a bit then let me drive it when we came to a dual carriage way. After a few miles we were round town etc. He let me drive it for a good hour, and in that time you really get to know it and it worked, I didn't want to give it back.
After you have shown off the cars potential, you can take control of where the person drives. If you think that after the first couple of miles on a safe road the driver is confident or not you can stop or continue.
ie. have a quick loop home or a longer scenic route.
Also, I saw mine on Autotrader on-line. I would regulary trawl through it, then this one came up. Max. coverage is best.

Given that it may take some time to sell...... not sure how viable the "any driver" amendment to your policy will be (?) Worth a try though as it removes 99.9% concerns..... and that peace of mind has got to be worth a few squid.

Failing that I'd insist they have their own insurance (and can demonstrate this to you), or you "display" the car's potential and then give them the opportunity to drive it on a very specific piece of road of your choice. Nowhere else.

I'd obviously make this crystal clear to them on the phone before they come to view. If they don't agree then they may as well stay at home.

Good luck. [:)]

I want those brake cooling ducts. Anyone seen them for sale anywhere?

End of my hijack too.

I think that the suggestions of don't let them drive it unless they provide insurance but make that clear on the phone are pretty good. I know it's a pain but if I were serious about the car and told beforehand then I'd be prepared to comply with that.

A mate of mine used to be a mechanic in a small independent dealership and the owner used to have the cars prepared and valeted before sale. Consequently he didn't like test drives, especially when it was wet and saw them as something just to confirm the car was OK to someone who had already decided to buy it. Bearing in mind that meant no passenger ride either and that he was (and possibly still is) one of the most successful dealers in the area then it looks like it doesn't hurt.

Perhaps you could make it clear that only you drive unless they have comprehensive insurance cover but that you are more than happy to take them for an extensive passenger ride and that they can drive it before handing over the cash if they decide they like it, once they have insured it? That way they can see it, decide they want it and then come back to pick it up with insurance and take it for a spin with you before handing over the cash to satisfy themselves they are completely happy.

looks an absolute beauty. Hard to fault it from the pics, and the spec and history looks spot on. Best of luck with the sale.

Its a performance bargain [:D]

Someone might pay it for a good one but it will need someone who appreciates the difference and may take a long time to sell.

I notice you didn't mention the rare (for a later than 88) lack of sunroof in the pistonheads advert which might be a plus to some.
