What have I done? (Warning - Damaged car content)...

..... I hate myself - Overtaking a parked trailer on an A-road, car coming the other way leaving me enough room until the point of no return when he chose to move to the middle of the road. I had nowhere to go - It was a choice of hitting the oncoming car or the trailer - I chose the trailer [:(]

Car is currently at Bryn Jones in Bristol being stripped down - thank fcuk for protected no claims bonuses.

Looks like you might have got away with superficial panel damage only - wing, PU etc. Hard to tell without seeing in the luggage compartment. Fingers crossed. Still, look on the bright side, it's a good excuse for a front end respray anyway !

Yep,upper damage indicates no or very little damage to the tub/chassis,dont let them make out it has to go on a jig if that is not damaged(the tub)the repairers could try it on as its a way of getting thousands of extra pounds.
Try and get to go and inspect it and look in the bottom of the luggage comp,if its got no kinks or dents it will not need jigging.I had virtually the same damage after a bit of black ice/lampost action. They are tough little cars.

I can see where you're coming from Dan, but is it reasonable that I (the untrained eye) should argue with the bodyshop as to whether or not it needs to go on a jig?

The toughness is amazing though, I gave that trailer a hell of a clout.

One bonus is that I get the aircon condenser (which was knackered before) replaced on insurance [:)]

...unless they read this forum? [8|]

Oh no, feel very sorry for you.

What is the harm in it being checked on a jig of the insurance is paying for it?

Nothing i suppose, but i believe the car has to be stripped down to virtually a shell and the whole job takes a while and cost in the region of £11000.(info supplied by a friend who is the foreman of a major opc bodyshop in the south.)
I wouldnt want it done to my car, if it was not necessary.

Update - Engineer has viewed the car, and it's been written off [:(]

Now looking for a replacement - and waiting to be shafted by the insurance company with their payout []

Chris

Written off [] ?! I'm sorry to hear that.

How come ? It didn't look that bad in the picture. What did it look like under the surface ?

Next time when faced with a similar choice go for the oncoming car []...

Hmmm ? this smacks of foul practice to me - the car must be worth in excess of £25k to replace (sorry but no idea of mileage, condition etc), to me it looks like a relatively simple repair as others have said ? Front wing, PU, headlight and secondary lighting. Even with a complete front end respray to blend in the repairs i can't see that lot costing more than £6k.

The bodyshop said 6k before they investigated further - apparently the high tensile steel longitudinal member that forms part of the front of the chassis needs cutting out and replacing, also the floorpan is damaged, and even the A-pillar is slightly out. The pictures don't tell the full story - I gave it a hell of a clout. The entire front of the car has to be dismantled to straighten it, including front subframe, suspension, fuel tank etc.etc. - hell of a job.

To be honest, if I can get a sensible settlement then I'll take it, otherwise I'll have a car on my hands that has had serious crash damage - Not sure I want that come resale time.

Car has FSH and is in good condition - trouble is the mileage is 130k.

Chris

Mske sure you have plenty of pics to hand showing its condition before the incident - irrespective of mileage if youhave evidence to support its general condition you have something to rangle over ;)

I plan to - I've got every MOT cert, all service bills, photos, the whole shooting match.

I reckon a decent replacement will cost me about 26k, but there's no way I'll get that out of them I don't think.

Chris

a few cars in paragom which might help with the claim and replacement value.. http://www.paragon.gb.com/sales/default.asp

I guess unless you get a good payout from the insurance company you could lose whether you keep the car or not. Keep it and get less for your repaired car when / if you sell / part ex or say goodbye to it and possibly accept a low payout and have to pay a consequently higher price to change to move to another car. I would get as much evidence as possible of how much you will need to pay for a similar replacement. Have you kept your old Porsche Posts?

Hi

I had a similar situation with my LHD 3.2 Cabriolet that the MOT man crashed on my behalf...

The first offer was pretty derisory, as the insurance co assessor just looked on Autotrader and took an average

I collected all my past Porsche Posts, Porsche 911 world etc and collated a folder of examples similar to my car, ahd all the service docs etc, plus lists of desirable options that were on the car

You need a figure in your head that you would be happy with, and then negotiate for that. In the end, if you are after a sensible amount, they will agree

Good luck with it, and let us know how you get on

cheers

Pete

Really sorry to hear that. All that remains to do is push the insurance company for as much as you can get. I would be interested to hear what sort of payout they have in mind.

I wonder if the damaged/repaired vehicle will appear for sale anywhere ?

Yeh sorry to hear that.
Spot that car on a Road or track near you in a while.
When its near completion(the claim)it may be worth asking how much for a buy back though, probably would do well has a breaker or track car.
I know people who may be interested if you are bothered,if not i understand.
Good luck with it all anyways.

Hi

I got a good offer for my car from a local Porsche specialist for my car, and took up the offer - but when I told the Insurance company they knocked the extra money I was making from the sale off of the cash they paid me...[] saying that I had a duty to mitigate their loss......so if you do sell the car on keep scthum [;)]
