what I've spent on the car in 1st year

Well on the 4th of February I will of had the car for a year so I decided to see how much I've spent on the car so far not including fuel, car tax or insurance (near enough the same as all this lot) anyway the grand total is £3300.69 which in all honesty for it's age, mileage and it being essentially a £40,000+ car when it was new is not bad at all considering what I've had done to it, certainly could have been a lot worse.

What's the most any of you spent on a car over year?
 
Just shy of £5k.
That included Engine rebuild, entire brake system replaced, new cams (prior to the engine rebuild unfortunately) and so many bits and bobs.

 
worth every penny, a great investment.
I run my Lux for 7 years and spent nothing on it bar tyres, wipers, battery and Mot's then everything packed up atonce and I spent £2500 in 6 months lol then wrote it off at 20mph on a round about ho hum[;)]
 
Cost me £4k... Lots of hard to find parts and probably not the best basic car I could have found at the time...

Mine's been about £1k for 5k miles, not counting tax or petrol but including insurance. An old friend of the forum, Fen, told me to allow £1k per year to run a Lux and it's worked out nearly to the penny over four years. Last year cost me an MOT, both years either side I've had £1k-plus bills for an annual service. Over 4 years the depreciation is about £250 per YEAR!

I guess that you have to play "law of averages" with any older car, even more with a Porsche. Buying a cheap one, or a bad one, will cost you silly money over a year. Buy well, and run it long-term, and I'd struggle to find a more rewarding classic-car ownership experience. [:)]
 
I've had my S2 for just over 2 years now and spent about £500 in the first year (suspension geometry setup and basic service), and did about 10k miles.
I only did about 6k miles in the second year (it's a third car) but spent about £2500 (rusty sills properly sorted, full cambelt, tensioners, chain etc, fuel and brake lines replaced (did that myself so parts only) and front discs and pads).

Hopefully it should keep the old girl going well and looking good for a few more years yet!

Justin, can I ask how difficult it was to change the fuel lines? Apparently mine have been repaired "temporarily" and I've been advised to get them sorted. Easy job, or a nightmare?

And my spend so far (three weeks) has been £1200 but thankfully the worst is over.

Add tax, insurance and parking permit and the figure with the initial cost of car starts heading very rapidly to a total of £18500. Excluding fuel.

Am I bothered? Nope, but I am running out of things to break..... (I thought this 4 years ago, such optimism....)
 
Unfortunately you guys aren't even in the ballpark.[&o][&o][&o], suburb, COUNTRY!!!
But I may have a car on the road soon which at least justifys spending money on it...doesn't it??[:D]
 
My costs over the last couple of years could have been in the many thousands but were in the hundreds. Because I did all (well most of) the work myself.

However, list of advisory parts after the last OPC service came to :-
SUBTOTAL

TOTAL (with VAT)

1847.58

In addition to that I still have some bodywork to do on my car, and its 3 years since the last belt change and this time I really should do all the tensioners and rollers as well, oh and the clutch is starting to judder (last changed in 1997), and although I did have the Cam tensioner, slipper and chain replaced some years ago, its probably due again and possibly cams this time as well.

Parts alone are running into the £1000's even if I source cheaply, sensibly and even make a few parts myself.

If the labour wasn't free (mine) the car could very well have been heading for the breakers as the total cost of work needed would be way more than its value.[:mad:]

Ouch Jon [:(] At least you now have the reassurance of a fresh engine that should not give any more trouble for a few decades, just make sure you keep the car long enough to really feel the benefit. I keep a record of my expenditure on the Pistonheads website and it tells me that our S2 has cost £10,075 in repairs/servicing over 10 years and 83,000 miles so I still think the £1000 a year figure for a well maintained car is in the ballpark

Adding insurance mine comes to a grand total of £6,600 (excluding fuel) still worth it though I reckon.
 
Mine has been 1 years ownership this month. I have spent:

£150 2nd hand gearbox
£113 new tyre
£10 new acc cam thing
£40 service (plugs, oil, filters)
£40 MOT
£60 new front shocks.
£413 Total.

Need to do anti roll bar link and a rear bulb blew yesterday. So not a bad for a year.
 
There is a good cost-tracking system on the Pistonheads website, which is helpful. You need to register (which I imagine several people already have done), and put in the costs as they occur, but it totals them up and gives a helpful summary.

.. and shows I have spent £2,300 since May '06, so the £1500/year estimate is pretty accurate. Although this does include an expensive suspension refresh and a belt replacement ... I am hoping the coming couple of years will work out cheaper.

I keep my costs spreadsheet carefully hidden.. not into 5 figures yet [:D]
I expect my car to be a bit more expensive than most - track work does tend to put lots more items into the "consumables" column [;)]

I've had the car just over 2 years & the main costs are

Bodywork - £1500 (mainly after a little armco incident at Rockingham [8|])
Upgrades - £2000 (MAF. injectors, various suspension bits, gauges, more wheels - "of course I need 3 sets?" [;)] )
Aircon - £1200 (almost wish I hadn't bothered as it's still not right)
Consumables - £1500 (Tyres, pads, discs, oil etc..)
Headgasket - £600 (consumable [;)] )
Driveshafts - £500 (ditto)
Service Costs - £1,000 (inc belts & waterpump)

I've done various jobs myself - the MAF, most of the fluids/ pads etc.. so that's kept costs down a little, & when you take out the upgrades & track related costs it doesn't look too bad.

Haven't included insurance @ £600 pa or fuel

I keep think ing I'm through spending - still need that DPW though [:D], and probably a suspension rebuild later this year

I'd say depreciation on this car is close to zero - doesn't make it a cheap car to run, but you won't find anything better for the money.
