What should I do . . . ?

I've been toying with the idea of selling my 968 Sport in exchange for a Clubsport . . .

With the help of Big Dave and a few choice Porschephiles I bought a late (Nov '94) two-owner 968 Sport in March of this year, my first Porker and sole car.

It's been an emotional rollercoatser of a ride, it needed a full camshafts/belts & fluids service because it had been dry-stored for almost two years, I even had the wheels refurbished and new N3 rated S-02's fitted, I nearly fainted when I got the bill!

By the time I'd recovered a few weeks later I had a minor off and damaged a rear wheel, the accident was attributed to a lack of talent on my part, a lop-sided rear beam and very tired dampers, oh and it happened on a greasy, wet roundabout.

Chris Franklin at Center Gravity came to the rescue and fitted the venerable KW v3's with KW uniball top mounts, whilst he was at it he sent the rear beam off to be zinc plated and powdercoated. (We won't mention indexing the rear beam in Big Dave's presence).

EMC have done some sterling work on her too, their CompBrake front brake upgrade is amazing and they've ironed all the niggles she had, she's now running a healthy 202 BHP @ 6190 RPM at the wheels. She has good oil pressure and healthy compression on all four cylinders too.

She's a pretty well sorted everyday car, nicely compliant on the open road and not unduly harsh around town, on track she's sublime for my level of driving at the moment.

Now I'm completely and utterly into trackdays, aided and abetted by my instructor Gary Marsh, with this being my first RWD car it's been a steep learning curve but I love it.
We've done Keevil, Colerne and Abingdon this month alone, and here's the nub. . .

Do I carry on spending money on seats, harnesses, half-cage, second set of wheels/track tyres or should I sell the 968 Sport and buy a fettled Clubsport?

Plus points on my Sport are that she has a very strong engine (114K), no rust though the paintwork requires a bit of attention, the interior is virtually mint and she has air conditioning. All the extras like the suspension, big brakes, refurbished Cup II wheels make it a real fun car to hustle on road and track.

I love this car to bits but I'm not sure if I'm sullying a perfectly good Sport by modifying it but if I get a Clubsport I may have to go through the whole charade again and I doubt I'll have as strong an engine as I do in my current 968.

What should I do . . . ??

The Clubsport was a marketing exercise, buy some pole position's, chuck out the rear seats and save yourself a few grand.

Cheers for your input Pauly, my heart says keep the old gal and spruce her up a bit [:D]

Yep, keep what you know is a good car that you've already spent the money on. If you buy an unknown CS you'll only have to do it again. If you want to spend any more money then spend it on practicing and instruction [8D]

Hi Paz

I'm with the other two. Keep what you've got, a good soild basis for a lasting relationship, the more you do to it, the more it will become "your car", to develop with you.

Buy a CS and start from scratch with lots of knowns replaced by unknows to get to the same place - keep the black one!

Promise to take some pics if you let me know where and when!

Mike

You should " get a grip"....[;)][8|][;)][8|][:D][:D][:D]

What can I say Dave . . ?
I saw a lovely CS for sale and my mind started to go over all the options, fortunately the PCGB forum saved me!!

You can have a go at me in person on Saturday [8D]

I think the CS still has the extra weight saving but by the time you add in the 'comfort' extras theres still not much in it anyway.

This got me thinking, what is the difference between a 968 sport and a comfort spec CS then ??

Very little if any....

Paz. What was this CS youd seen + how much is / was it.. Details m8 ,,, come on....

I agree with everyone else. You're never going to regret having functioning air con, I know I never will.

Mine is about the same mileage as yours and the engine is also strong (compression and cylinder leakage tests check out OK) but was only producing 213bhp flat out. I've since realised that the throttle wasn't fully opening so that's been adjusted. I think I can tell the difference but am too scared to take it back to the rollers...

Thanks mahoneyj, time and again people keep telling me I need the AC for the summer months, truth is I only ever use it to demist the screen in colder climes, I prefer to open the windows/sunroof when it gets hot.

So long as your engine runs fine I don't see why you really need to get it on the rollers again but I guess it'd be nice to know what it's running now . . .

Looks like I'll be saving over the winter for some trackday-sepcific goodies [:D]

I was at C of G yesterday and my car is much improved by Chris's attention, if you are more interested in going fast in corners than on straights start there.

Hi Pauly, what setup did you go for?
Mine was setup for heavy understeer initially (my request) because of the incident I had but on my first trackday at Colerne I found it unbearable, she's setup as per 968 CS now, hopefully when I gain some decent driving skill I'll be tweaking the dampers/geo' . . .
I've yet to fit M030 antiroll bars which I think will be the final piece in the suspension/chassis department.

I popped-in to see Chris today actually, he was tweaking a GT3 - he works too hard!

I'm going to Chris with my 'Beetle' in a couple of weeks time, so curious to what difference he has made to your car?
