944Turbo

Just a theoretical question as Im not selling, but if you had a 944T with 323bhp & 329ftlbs and you wanted to replace it with something 'better' what would you buy? say with a maximum budget of £15k.
Retaining some practicality would be nice as would good predictable handling and equal or better performance.

Repeat for 400HP and £20K

PS its my post, so some extra rules are :- no fords because I dont like them (sorry) or BMWs except the 'M' bread van

I don't think it can be done [:D]

For performance at a cheap cost you could look at some sort of TVR but I don't think that would retain the practicaliity or longevity for the number of miles you do

For that money, I think you are going to struggle.
I can think of a few things that might be similar performance, but there's no point in that.
Anything with significantly more oomph is going to cost.
If you can't go bigger, then you could go smaller and lighter, e.g. Caterham, but that is hardly the same level of practicality.

The only thing I can think of is a Supra and then chip it.

Maserati Ghibli Twin Turbo at a push. I remember watching these at the touring car championships, they were extremely fast on a straight but lacked though the corners.

I've thought long and hard along the same lines.

I'm a bit too old for Scoobys and the like.

I concluded that it isn't possible to spend less than 10k and get what a 951 gives.

If the 993 ever comes down, it could be worth a look, but I doubt this will happen for another 10 years.

It may be possible to buy a fried egg 996 in, say, 2007 for 12-15k

Just enjoy your 951 - it's the best value for money I've ever driven, 911's included!

Oh, yeah it just occured to me:

A ten-yr-old Jaguar V8, either XK coupe or XJR saloon. Approx 15k

Be prepared for it to be worth approx 25p after a year, though.
Oh, sorry, you said 'No Fords'!

Nah, no matter where you look, you can't get the hp and handling per pound as a 951, even if you spend £5k on it to get it exactly how you want it.

Regards

Just had an interesting thought and one which keeps us in the Porsche family.

A manual 928 GT [:D]

5 litres, 330bhp, a bit lighter than normal, occasional rear seats and a boot.

They are around the £10k mark. Then you could approach Jon Mitchell who has fitted Superchargers to these. Hello 500bhp.

Even though they are still heavy they are fine handling, I just wish I could see one at a trackday

Volvo 850 T5R Estate

OK perhaps a little under 300 bhp, but how about:-

Vauxhall Monaro 5.7 V8 (£28,650 new, so probably £12K second hand [;)] if you can get one) 329 bhp 343 lb ft, 0-60 6 secs.

Holden Commador?

V8 Landy. Granted it isn't fast on tarmac but it would beat a 944 across a field, and it is so much fun, and if you don't wash it it looks even better.

hi

How about an old red london double decker they crank out some 450+ bhp im sure an extra 50 could be obtained, and practicality wow you could take the whole family out [;)] and still have room. And just think if you and the wife have a falling out you can live in it. Have it lowered tint the windows and its the ulitmate bling bling modile you know you want one.[:D][:D][:D]

I IKnow i said practical but estates ? Ok the RS2 has only a tiny boot but T5R?
I will drop the practicality and specify a similar or better power/weight ratio.

Saab 9-5 Aero tuned by Hirsch; 305 bhp, 309 lb-ft, 5 seats and a big boot, plus you get boooost! [:D] . 3-4 year old ones easily come in under £10k, and they're good to drive.

Nissan Skyline R33 - can be easily tweaked to 400 bhp, dam ugly compared to R34 but hey quick, decent size and handle well but come on its not a Porsche is it - personally as mentioned Supra TTurbo Manual are a beast

ORIGINAL: 944Turbo

There's a T5R saloon as well...

Anyway, Allan had it with the Audi's - if you're anti-estate then the S4 comes with a saloon body. If that's too square for you as well then the S2 coupe modifies up to RS2 spec (cams, turbo, exhaust, inlet manifold) and comes in under £15k including the car and a remap to about 340bhp.

Failing that TVRs have good power to weight and Chims/Griffs/Cerberas are available for £15k or so, or if you don't care about practicality at all you can have a brand new Dax Rush MC with a turbo'd Hyabusa engine making 350bhp at 500kg for about £18k.
