What Tyres

Anyone out there that knows the best tyres to buy for a 944 Turbo (220), I currently have Avon ZZ1's all round (205x55r16 to the front and 225x50r16 to the rear).

Any suggestions?

Steve

Hi,

For Road use I had Avon ZZ1's on my old BMW (the size was 235/45/17's). I found that the previous Michelin HX Tyres (225/50/16) had far more grip in both the wet and dry, and were far more predictable when they let go.

I can also vouch for the Continental Conti Sports (in 225 & 245) on my current Porsche.

I have heard that N rated tyres are far more prefferable (article below sheds some light).

Hope this Helps!

I just bought 4 new Toyo T1-Rs for mine 3 days ago, they will be going onto the car once the wheels are refurbed.

The Toyos are goo and the new T1-R is apparently much improved over the S.

Each to his own i suppose. Toyos were ÂŁ95 for rear 245/45-16 and ÂŁ80 for front 225/50-16

Mark,

Touring will be the main use, I havn't convinced the other half that a track day would be good for the car (and me).

I do around 7,000 miles per year and would like them to last at least 10,000miles if that's possible.

Carl,

Thanks for the article I will read this tonight, I have noticed that even in mildly wet conditions when I put my foot down to overtake the rear end is twitchy. I still have around 4mm of tred so a couple of months to go.

I can't believe the car should be so twitchy but then since i've had the car I havn't had a decent day's driving (warm dry weather, that is).

Thanks for your input.

Steve

I had Toyo tyres on my V6 Alfa previous and was impressed by their performance, they also lasted around 15,000miles which suits me too.

I am considering Toyo's next but didn't know if anyone had other ideas. But as you say each to their own. The price is good too.

Thanks

Steve

Originally I was running ZZ1's but they were a bit hairy in the wet (probably more to do with the wear than the tyre)

Michelin's for me, although I was running Uniroyal RainSports on the back which were, as the name suggests, superb in the wet.

I've now got Michelin Pilots SX MXX3 N2's 205/55ZR16 on the front and 225/50ZR16 on the back and they are spot on

I run Michelin Pilot's on the S2 and they give me confidence - had Falkens on in the past and never liked the tyre.

I've had the Contis before and been happy with them on road and track, I currently have Kuhmo Ecsta 712s and am very happy with them as a budget tyre (ÂŁ75 fiitted). So far they have covered 6000 miles and are still at 6mm tread, including two wet trackdays and a few laps of the Nurburgring.

You shouldn't really have a twitchy rear end under power though 4mm is pretty low tyre tread if its really wet. How old are your shocks? Worn ones may not be controlling things as they should. Even if the front ones are gone and the rear are ok, then the front may be rising too high under acceleration causing imbalance

I had Avons on mine but found them noisy and poor grip.

Now on Kuhmo Ecsta 712s and find they last well, are quiet and grip reasonably. Very good price from Mitcheldever Tyres near Winchester.

I just put a set of Falkens on my S2 and on my brothers 968. Went through 3 sets on my old M5 and couldnt fault the tyre on or off the track. Cheap as chips as well.

My Turbo had ZZ1s on it when I bought it. I thought the clutch was slipping on the way home with the car until I realised it was lighting both of them up in 3rd gear on damp surfaces. I also thought it had a totally shot wheel bearing because of the noise they made. They came off as soon as I got it home because I had my 18's to go on it and the difference was like night and day. They went on my S2 coupe when I sold it and the new owner reported a worn wheel bearing noise too. In short I wouldn't touch them ever again based on that experience.

I have Bridgestone S02 on the back and Michelin Pilot Sport on the front just now.

Funny i think the avon tyres seem to get a pretty bad rep everwhere. Barge and pole come to mind.

I will post pic of my Toyos tomorrow when i get back to the site office and the digi camera.

You're not joking, are you?[]

I had Goodyear Eagles on my 944S2, couldn't fault them -still may have a spare rear in the garage if anybody interested?

Of course I'm not joking.

I personally don't give a bollox for all this "keep the same tyres all round" nonsense when I have 265/35 on one end and 225/40 on the other and most tyre ranges construction changes from one size to the next. Virtually all tyres aren't front or rear specific, nor are they driven or undriven specific and every car has different dynamics and weight bias. Do you seriously think that Bridgestone or Michelin designed their tyre ranges with any consideration of being used on a 15 year old car with non-standard wheel sizes? Or even the specific combination of sizes I am running? 225/30 18 is a hot hatch size these days so it anything they're probably designed with suitability to 200+bhp FWD in mind.

Does it make the handling less predictable having quality tyres on the front of a different brand to the quality ones on the rear? Of course not, the car does just the same in a given set of conditions every time. I agree that might be different to what it would do with 4 tyres of the same type but I refuse to accept it is necessarily worse. It might be of course, or it might just be different or it just might actually handle better with a mix.

My Pug has 4 tyres the same size, hence it wears 4 tyres the same but even there I don't think it's inherently bad to have different tyres front and rear.

I agree Fen, when I got my car it had Avons on the rear and "roadhogs" or some other rubbish on the fronts The avons gave me a headache after 5 mins at 40mph on a dual carrigway. I bought a 2nd set of wheels which came with spare rears (very worn P-Zero's ) so I binned the avons and put these on they were great and after a day at bruntingthorpe when I discovered that even very worn quality tyres far out perform newish crap tyres I was ready for my Falkens, that and I need to drive to the Ring next week!

Toyos on the Rover and Goodyear F1s on the porker.

Very pleased with both but if its down to cost then the Toyos win hands down.

Hi Steve,
I`ve used my 944 all year round as a daily driver for the last 12 years, and unlike Fen , prefer to use the same make front and rear.Over the years ,as a result of this I`ve only used two brands in this time. For the first 5 or 6 years I used Pirelli p6000s and then changed to Michelin pilots and have to say that the Pirellis were more "descriptive" of the surface underneath the tyres with a tendancy to tramline, whilst the Michelins make the car feel more planted on the road whatever the weather.I`d recommend them.205s on the front and 225s on the rear work for me too.
regards,
jr.

P6000's "the Bacolite tyre". They could just be even worse than Avon ZZ1's. OK, maybe not that bad but the were OEM on my wife's Ibiza 1.4, what does that say about their peformance credentials?

i use Falken FK-451 for both track and road use

it says i am a non member but i am a member how do i change this
