What Tyres

ORIGINAL: Fen

P6000's "the Bacolite tyre". They could just be even worse than Avon ZZ1's. OK, maybe not that bad but the were OEM on my wife's Ibiza 1.4, what does that say about their peformance credentials?

PMSL

Thats very unfair Fen i had P6000 on my Golf TDI they lasted 130,000 miles and still had 7mm left on them. lolsss

Well Guys I have BF Goodrich all round on my 17" Turbo Twists & I can't wait to get rid of them, very noisy, tramlineing too easy to induce drift (even going UP fish hill for the midlanders here) but they are hardly wearing at all. Think thy will go onto e-bay for some boy racer.

Heres the Toyos before the wheels go in to get refurbed today.

Atleast the look good, pretty sure the will perform well too.

I started with Michelin (MXX3's P0) which came with the car, not bad but nothing special - though they were over half worn. I then tried Bridgestone S02's (P3) which I found very grippy wet or dry - however when pushing on the track I found these to give way with very little feedback or warning once the limit was reached. I also found that they were very soft and wore fast I also had a tread split in the centre and a sidewall cut on pothole - maybe unlucky but never experienced this with any other brand. I Now use Dunlop SP9000's (no P rating) and I have been very impressed (on my second set of rears). They are harder than the S02's so last longer but offer almost as much grip as the S02's in the wet, a bit less in the dry. They also have much 'softer' on limit charecteristics, when they let go they seem to give a few degrees of slip and then hold on - Having a set of trackday tyres now I haven't pushed them over this point so don't know what happens but you would have to be doing something very silly (or planned) to do so.
In the dry when you are taking liberties they squeal to worn you of approaching grip loss providing extra feedback.
At a wet Silverstone (year before last) the Gold Track Instructor asked what tyres I had as he was impressed by the way they held on.
So thats another option/view in the mix.
This was over a four year perieod and 60,000+ miles. I have 17" 225 and 255 car started standard (probably below 250) now is around 330BHP

I think you're spot on - my Turbo came with these on the front. Three years later and 45,000 miles later they are now down to 3mm. They'll be getting Kuhmos to match the rear very soon [8|]

Personally i dont think you can beat a set of Goodyear F1, GSD3,s

They are brilliant , wet or dry ... Very confidence inspiring....+ predictable...[:D]

Ive got them fitted to my 968 cab ..

Got a set of Dunlop Super Sport Race for the Track .. not tried them yet...

Ive got Continental Sport Contacts fitted to my S2 + im not keen on them at all.[&o]

Hi Fen,

I had them on my cab when I got it. I did 2 mini trackdays at the Haynes museum track, which I used as an excuse to go sideways so that canned the rears and then finally a RWYB day with the fronts on the back where I made it my mission to do the biggest burnouts of the day in the staging area. 4 nearly new but crappy tyres destroyed in 3 days of fun then [:)]

Toyos were £95 for rear 245/45-16 and £80 for front 225/50-16

Slim, were those prices fitted or were they delivered from a mail order place?

That was fitted, but i just picked them up from the place (just round the corner from where i work) Just going to get the guy who is refurbing the wheels to fit them.

The place is in Dumfries, very very good prices on all his tyres.

WOW!!!

Thanks for all your input on what tyres to go for next, it's good to know that the Avon's I currently have on the car are crap and it's not the car that's sruggling for grip in bad weather.

I am going to have a good read of all your comments and make my mind up nearer the time.

Thanks again.

Steve

I put Toyo T1Rs all round on my 944 a couple of months ago. I have found them excellent in terms of grip and performed well on a track day at Donington a week ago.

Got them from www.camskill.co.uk for £338 inc delivery (not fitting).
