What would you improve in the 944

I have often sat in the S2 and thought about what I would have done differantly if I was involved in the design process . Surprisingly enough I don't think I would change much myself. A testament to the original designers I suppose. One or two minor things I would change are .
Raised centre armrest (too low except for dwarfs)
increased width of drivers door rest and padding ( I like resting my arm on the door)
left foot rest further away ( I'm a 6 footer )
Adjustable steering wheel (hight and depth)
thats about it really

On a purely personal note I would like to redesign the centre console so that it is higher and flows more from the dash to the centre armrest with better facilities like a b****y cup holder and somewhere for the cellfone and satnav I quite like TVR design where you feel you are climbing into a cockpit. (what you have in an aircraft lol)
so what would you change on yours ?

I quite like TVR design where you feel you are climbing into a ....pit.

You've got to love the swearing filter [:D][:D][:D].

Following your comments about the seating position I have a strange mental image of what shape you are. In honesty the centre consul, door and steering wheel location are just about perfect for me. Perhaps I'm a strange shape.

You are right about not having enough room for all the oddments of modern life but, unless they are built into the cars electrical system originally, most cars seem to suffer from this (Land Rovers and Transits excluded).

I love the seating position most of al,l I'd move that damn clock though, although it's fine for the passenger, I'd also chang the centre arm rest and make it a bit more sturdy, lets be honest it's rubbish. However it's always funny when someone new gets in to the passenger side as it's always lower than they expect and then seems really difficult to get out and no matter how tall they are and they always seem to bash their head, shouldn't laugh really, but I do!

It even picks out of the middle of complete words like cockspur stopcock (water tap) cockle (shellfish) [:D]

ah ha it missed stopcock

In terms of cosmetic design I would make the hatch look just a little less bulbous. Have molded rear light fittings like the 968. Somehow have more headroom. I'm 5'10" and there's very little room with the brainbucket on. No idea how the tallies fit?? Have an option for clear lens headlights a'la 924 GTR, mainly to create a bit more room underbonnet. Have the ability to go for wider wheels and tyres. I will say no matter how many times 968 owners say their cars are sexier than ours I laugh. The lines on our cars are without doubt more curvacious than our younger sibling's and there's an end to it!

I'm quite satisfied with what is in my cockpit, An improvment I would ask is more to do with the materials used for the dash, maybe the modern day equivalent material would not crack.
The other annoyance is the hand brake. If wearing suit trousers I always seem to get my trouser leg caught on the end of the handle. How? I don't know.
Visibility of the temperature gauge could be better too I suppose.
Back lit switchgear.

A change others have mentioned in hte past would be the position of the brake and throttle peddles so heel-toeing can be done better.

Just minor things really of what is essentially quite a good design in my opinion.

I have the 8 way adjustable seats and to get my legs under the steering wheel the seat has to be lowered right down to the floor. Maybe thats why I get my trousers caught on the handbrake when getting out.[&:]

1. There's absolutely no point in the rear seats, I took mine out.
2. I'd really like decent air conditioning/ climate control.
3. 2/3 Small but very bright headlights on each side, mounted in the 924 GTP manner, so that there's no need for the pop ups.

I like the pop up headlamps. But then I am old enough to know that all Supercars have to have pop up headlamps. It's the law. [:)]

Me too, they fit just right. Maybe lower the gearstick by about an inch but that's about it.

Oh and definately make the water temperature gauge more visible [8|]

its interesting how minor all these proposals are ! they are all about ergonomics really and even there the 944 is just about perfect for driving comfort .
I spend a lot of my day driving around its my office out of the office really and something I really miss is the ability to put my drink somewhere safe .I might try to modify the ash tray some day

There's not really anything I would want to change design wise - though I do wish the engine note was a tad more sporty and pleasant.....

At last! A suggestion I agree with [:D]

OK so mine is a lightweight/slimline 944 but my comments will also be the same in most of the common models.[;)]
Cam belt adjustment. Some have the self tensioners as per the 928 I wish mine had.

Handbrake leaver. Adjust if so that it engages fully before it rises above the side of the seat

Dashboard / facia on the pre '85 cars. Rubber would be better that recycled bin liners.

Apart from that, and I am refering to the 8valve cars, what a lovely engine and superbe chassis. Shame about the body work on the wide (midle age spread) cars.[:D]

I'm thinking of getting a cover to keep the cats paws and bird poo off my car .

Did I tell anbody yet how much I luv my car ? ...................I'll get my coat [:D][:D][:D]

I'm very happy with the ergonomics, but the engine noise is so underwhelming (n/a and turbo variants)

V6, I6 or V8 - any of those would do. I'm probably asking for too much for a V10 or V12 [;)]

My V6 Sierra made a lovely noise - I'd be happy with that. [:D]

Spot on, its more important than the fuel gauge at a glance, I`m surprised Porsche put it there unless a v short designer sat in the car withe seat forward.

The steering wheel is apain as its too low for me with my long legs when I get in and out of the car but when seated its fine

The clutch (on mine anyway) needs to be depressed fully to the bulkhead for smooth changes which I find a pain, anyone else have this issue?

I had a fitted cover and found it did more damage than good and even though it was a breathable type it gave my paintwork pimples in the damp atmosphere[]

I would move the handbrake for sure and swop the clock for one with hands rather than the tacky digital type and finally I would have lower rear arch trim protectors for the bloomin stone chips!

so what would you change on yours

Design-wise, pretty much nothing.

I'm a bit worried, though, as I can see my temp gauge perfectly fine. I will be booking an appointment with my doctor tomorrow.....
