What's going on - won't start or cuts out

Im rushing so will guess that Pete has linked to the DME relay replacement bridge. This will rule both (both physical relays in the 'DME relay' housing) out by bypassing them, but you shouldn't keep them fitted afterwards as the accident/safety fuel cut off will be bypassed and itll keep squirting fuel in if you have an accident.

Thanks for that Pete - couldn't see the wood for the trees on Clarkes - looking in Electrics & Engine. Picked up up a 'Summer Cold' from somewhere so brain not working - will try out the relay testing when I'm thinking straight.

I was aware of a 'get you home fix' but didn't know the details - duly warned of the downside now though. Managed to put an Alfa on its roof in my yoof but that had a mechanical fuel pump so no problem . . .

Finally got round to testing the DME relay. NOT faulty according to the Clarks tests, but showing signs of over heating on many of the spades & their solder joints. The rear coil which seems to connect across terminals 30 and 87b seems to have lost its copper colour (see photo) because it has got too hot. I presume this will be the fuel pump - hopefully not indicating an imminent pump failure? For the record, the new 993 relay is numbered differently to the usual: 30=2, 86=3, 85=1, 87=8, 85b=9, 87b=4. Thought it might be useful to post this so someone doesn't have to work it out from scratch [;)]

Old relay at the top.

I recently had the same issue after a belt change and service. It turned out to be the afm connector, I unplugged it sprayed I some contact cleaner and gave it a light rub with some fine emery paper. No hunting at warm idle now and starts perfectly. Worth a try if you have a minute. Ant

I had similar symptoms, though it never cut out once actually running. But it sometimes just refused to start, then started. I also have an autowatch immobiliser. That turned out to be the problem. The soldered joints in the circuit to the starter motor had gone bad, so an electrician bypassed that circuit, and now it works fine. (Hope I haven't jinxed it!) Car is still immobilised via fuel pump circuit etc. so still secure. When you try to start it and it won't start, do you hear a whining electrical powering up noise from under the bonnet? This is what I had, and that noise is the fuel pump coming to life - but the immobiliser won't let the engine start.
