Yeah, the '44 is a proper head ache at the minute. There's an awful knocking coming from the rear and can i balls find what it is. It's defo coming from the O/S rear hub/disc area. You know the studs that are pressed into the hub? well if you can imagine one of them being loose and catch something as it went round, well that's the type of noise it is and it's loud as hell, like a hammer hitting a vice. I think it's something to do with the handbrake set up but try as i might i cant find what it is. And i've had the whole set up in pieces a dozen times now. I'm not taking it to a garage though, oh no. I'll find the ****** in the end, but it is very dis-heartening stripping everything down, trying something else, build it back up, the old "This time i've got it" feeling and then CLANG CLANG CLANG.

re the 44 that kind of problem is really irritating isn't it.
I eventually took mine to a specialist after months of putting up with the clonking and whine .They diagnosed wheel bearing and replaced two. Of course it made no difference. The garage were keen to embark on a `lets replace everything until we find it' ! kind of adventure but I wasn't keen .
I drove it for a few more months then one dark night in a snow blizzard in the middle of nowhere the drive failed completly. The problem I learnt later was the rubber inserts in the clutch that give a smooth take up. The rubber had perished and there are some small bits of metal that are left to `get you home'
A testiment to my driving I had driven the car for thoudsands of miles over half a year before it failed.
One really weird sound I had once like yours turned out to be loose wheel nuts.!.. no don't laugh. The garage forgot to tighten them. It sounded like a bag of nuts in the wheel rim especially noticable at very low speeds down my enclosed drive. I would try finding a high brick or stone wall in a quiet area and have someone either coast , push the car or drive slowly down the edge of the wall see if you can pinpoint it .
It does kinda sound like the drive shafts I have to say.
Have you tried jacking the rear of the car and sticking it in 1st or 2nd then turning the rear wheel backward and forward by hand and see if there is any freeplay or clonking in the transmission ?

Thanks for the advice and encouragement man. Someone else said the cv joints or drive shaft so i bought a second hand unit, i didn't want to pay ÂŁ200 for a new unit and for that to not be the problem after all, i fitted it up dropped the car back down, went for a spin but didn't get off the drive. Clonk Clonk. Glad it was a second hand unit then.
I'll get there though.
So come on then everyone, what's your other motor? The more interesting the better. So no 3-series or vectras etc.

Full marks to you though Darren, what a superb 'little' collection you've got there. I don't really care what other brand of car people are in to and can appreciate any of them, it's the enthusiasm of the owners that really really matters and from the photo's you have plenty of enthusiasm for your cars. I'm sure you'll persevere with your 944 and end up with a stonker that will return your hard work and patients with thousands of trouble free miles of very enjoyable driving.

Subaru Legacy Sports Tourer - 2004 model, it corners slightly harder than the dogs can hold on.......[&:]
Toyota Hiace - 2002 D4D hi-torque van. The rear tyres lasted 10k, I've no idea if the RWD and the unbelievable grunt could be to blame.....[]
Hayter 19 inch pro - it pays the bills and starts first time......[8|]
Also, Stihl chainsaw, strimmer, hedgecutter, high-reach hedgecutter, blower, etc....
Well, they do have motors.....[]

Saying that the 944 is perfect for me, I am starting to get grief about just how hard it is in its current guise (with talk of shattered spines and threats of chiropracters bills []), so I suppose this could always be a good excuse to get a second car. Trouble is the only other one I fancy at the moment would be a stripped out 964RS [] (an F40 & 6R4 would be acceptible though [])
Best regards,
Peter

Love the KG razor edge - nicest one I've seen. Luggage compartment both ends - engine under the rear boot floor, - makes you wonder about the development car vw were working on with the engine below the rear seats when the audi50 / polo/ audi 80/golf were introduced. You do much work to it??
I too am a VW fan - grew up with Beetle MOT failures in the fields, they were the only car that could stick it. My father had a few in the 60's when they were new.

I usually do a lot of work to get cars up to show condition but with the razor it's all someone elses work. I bought it like that and i love it. I'd been after a good one for years, but had pretty much given up and had resigned to the idea of doing another build up. So i sold my Splitty (VW Camper) and started looking about. Two days after i sold the Split this beauty came up for sale. Its had everything done to it and even though i've looked at a few of these (there's only 100 in the country, and probs 40 on the road) This was by far the best that i'd come across.
So it was fate, The razor took the splitty's place in the garage and it's a delightful piece of automotive history to own. But i desperately miss the camper now the good weather has started. Must get saving again.
