Wheel Alignment

Hi there,

Does anyone know of a decent place in the central belt where I can get a 4 wheel aligment set up done on a 968. Any suggestions would be great. I just would like someplace that is experienced in Porsches.

Thanks

Mark

That was quick. You're obviously as busy as me then.

I take that these guys are good then. I'm just a bit weary as i've heard bad stories about places making a right hash of things as they don't see P cars often or are just cowboys. Thanks.

Mototune in Shotts worth a call 01501 822247. Did my rear wheels (after they changed clutch and had to re-align). He's well equiped and very experienced on Porsche so I'd be very surprised if he could not do the full monty.

Worth getting to know him for servicing too.

Motortune sounds like a safe bet. I live in South Lanarkshire so that would be close aswell. Thanks for the prompt replies.

You can try CLCM in Edinburgh : 0131 453 2698

They have worked on a few 911s' and I have heard good things about them. Set up Toe in/out ,castor and camber on my mates 911 racer, at a reasonable price too.

Cheers for all the suggestions. I'll have a phone around tomorrow and get a feel for who know what. The car just feels like the turn in is too sharp, and its making the back feel loose. Its been off the road all winter and i've been using a 106 diesel instead, so i'm maybe just imagining it. Anyhow i want it checked and sorted for the summer (by summer i mean the 2 days sunshine we are likely to see in Scotland). I'd just like to put it in somewhere that will do it proper, but not charge the earth for it. So thanks for your suggestions, I'll keep you posted on how i get on. Thanks again Mark

I would suggest you go to CLCM in Edinburgh, as mentioned above. He is a real expert, and has the best gear too, and he still does the "difficult" Ferraris that Graypaul can't get right. He transformed my 964, where others had just fiddled with it.

Top bloke!

PS ... I'd avoid Star Performance, no doubt good, but likely to be very expensive.

I phoned him today and have prov booked in my car as it has just had new tyres and wheels put on it so want to make sure it is spot on ,would take about 1 hr and the cost no more than £60 a bargain me think's .There are plenty of car showrooms in the area to while away an hour or two.

Hi Kitchens. I take it you mean that you booked your car into CLCM in Edinburgh. £60 sounds like a bargain. I have not had a chance to phone them yet. Will probably try to book it in for next weekend if they are not to busy. Let me know how you get on if your in before me.

Not meaning to imply anything by this, but surprised he can do it in just 1 hour when you read posts like the 9th one on this

saying it took someone 12 hours to get it spot on (admittedly with rusty bolts to contend with and maybe a 964 is more difficult)

Lets us have a report when it's done.

There was a world of difference between my car in 3 states:
1) Before clutch change
2) immediately after clutch change (with engine out etc)
3) then again after the alignment was "fixed" when I complained about handling

But I'm not convinced (1) and (3) above are quite the same and I would not mind paying someone, who really knows what they are doing, to redo the whole thing from scratch now I know what a big difference a few spanner turns can make.

To be honest if it takes 12 hours then there is something significantly wrong or the wrong equipment is being used - unless you are getting a custom setup including corner weighting etc. Between 1-2 hours is normal to do a full setup to standard settings. OPCs charge a standard 2 hours labour, and they aren't known to under-estimate the time taken.

That's what he said about 1 hr I assume that is if nothing is so far out he has to spend more than that on it.I still have to confirm to him which day I can go through

When I got CLCM to do my 964, he got halfway thro and got stuck by a siezed bolt, which I subsequently got Peter at Motortune to fix. I took it back to CLCM and he finished the job, the whole thing cost about £70 for the two visits.

By comparison, Star Performance wanted a minimum of £200 before they would even look at it.

I wouldn't have thought that if everything is in order it won't take too long, certainly not more than 2 hours for just adjusting to standard settings.

I can understand how these jobs can take longer than expected. There has been many a time i have worked on cars and 1 seized or snapped bolt takes hours to sort. I am planning, weather and significant other half permitting to get under the beast and make sure that all the bolts are able to move ok. Then at least if they are I have time to play with them, and god forbid snap any it can be replaced.

On another note I notice that on ebay you can pick up a full set of PU bushes for <£150. I'm actually considering this as the originals surely must be past their best. Anyone got any experience on this? Is it too harsh or should I stick to OEM parts??? The car is not used on the track, but i do only use it for weekends mostly on the back roads.

I can vouch for CLCM. Willie did a good job on my Boxster. Feels like a different car now. A lot cheaper than the OPC £200 plus also.....

CLCM Autotyre, 11 Bankhead Drive, Edinburgh, EH11 4EJ Tel 0131 453 2698 are about as good as you will find anywhere, and very reasonably priced too.
