A replacement wheel bearing would be cheaper![]ORIGINAL: MARK H.
Thanks guys, i'm hoping it's the tyres!.......haven't had time to investigate further yet.
Hopefully having a friend who's a mechanic to take a look for his opinion this weekend!

I thought I too had a wheel bearing problem but the thread refers to a 'rumble', further advice is given on swerving and the 'rumble' disapears in one direction if it is a wheel bearing. My noise is more of a whine, and I find it is constant above 20mph and does not disapear on a left or right hand bend. Searching the forum suggests all sort of nasty things from whines but seemingly on older cars. It is just a whine, no other symptoms, gears change ok
Anyone got ideas on common problems. Car is an 03 s with 21k

Whine seems the same volume at all times. Discussed with mechanical friend in local hostelry (walked) who suggested checking what happens when clutch depressed, apparently if it continues with depressed clutch it eliminates gearbox from problem. I thought I had a problem but he has just fixed sparks coming from underneath his plane's dashboard which is potentially more of an issue!

I don't see how it can be anything mechanical if the note remains unchanged irrespective of engine or road speed.
I would be inclined to concentrate on items such as climate control/heater fans, audio and intruder alarm systems etc. or anything else that runs independently of these.
Sorry I am unable to be more helpful. []

Sorry again it's taken so long to post a result!
Took my car up to the Exter OPC yesterday for the cars first MOT and to have the rear checked out.
They state that the rear treads on the tyres are "OUT OF SHAPE" so they "suspect" that to be the cause of the noise.
Treads are down to about 2-3 mm's so i will shop around for new tyres and once fitted i'll let you know what the result is!!
PS.....Wouldn't normally go to OPC for MOT as it's so far away but there were PRO's and CON's!
PRO's : The weather was GOOD even though the forcast had been BAD, so it was a great drive up and down!
For £50 the car was MOT'd and Valeted inside and out! So i went home with clean car!!
Free tea and coffee while i waited!
CON's : Had to wait 5 hours!!!!! (Think that's also why they valeted my car!) Supposed DVLA computer problems getting the MOT?! (Short staffed in service dept i think really, for the amout of cars they had in the service area!!)
160 mile round trip.
1 day of my holiday taken up getting car MOT'd (Seeing as good weather, i didn't mind too much but my misses wasn't impressed!!!!!)

Mark,
Hope new tyres will solve your problem.
Tyres were something I mentioned in my first post on the subject if you recall.
I'm not sure that Exeter OPC actually do the MOT's on-site. I believe they subcontract them out, so maybe that's the reason for your delay. []

Hi
My problem whine has now been solved. It was diagnosed as a front offside wheel bearing. It always sounded like a whine, definitely not a rumble. Was fixed this week and I will get to try it out today. Garage actually could not see anything wrong with the bearing but it's replacement has solved the problem. Previously they had the same issue with a Golf and found a hairline crack in the casing.
I don't fully understand the reason, but thought it helpful to add to the wealth of knowledge I pick up from this forum. Nice to put something back in.
Now have an opportunity to run it around some lanes on holiday without an embarrassing noise as I pass pedestrians!!!

I am surprised we don't see more wheel bearing failure with our roads so dire, and the speed hump virus. A mechanic told me he'd seen a sharp rise in failures of wheel bearings , ABS sensors, and suspension arm bushes in general (even on new VW Golfs) - because of this. It is really sad as I am constantly dodging all the potholes, and speed humps, designed by Ken's Red Army to hinder my progress (and probably why people resort to 4x4's in London!), whilst those who speed continue to do so because they don't really care about the humps (van, courier , co car drivers or general banger drivers !). An inspection underneath the Boxster reveals light alloy parts in the suspension and it is hardly surprising these get punished - the car is not a 4x4. It's not a major issue to replace the bearings and I would just put it down to bad luck.[]
