Where are they now....

It's on the cards Paul.. just need to do it before I'm too old to make the most of it....:)

I'm the same! I have someone at work who is mad on golfs mk4s. He's got a vr6 and has turbod it and he rejoins it will do 180 mph and 0-60 in 3.8 seconds and invited me into a race once I revuild my 952 but I said listen....... you may have a touch more 0-60 than I do but it's irrelevant to me to race you, becuase at the end of the day I'm no snob as one of my favourite cars was my mk2 gti (rest in peace ) but.... my car is quite an animal and the difference is it was originally made by porsche in 1987 and that is the reason why in my eyes you'll never beat me! ?? The 80's for me is the last proper generation of cars that really get me excited! to think our cars with some modest improvements can beat modern fast cars and keep up with many top end sports cars and remain the same shell and look from the 80 s is something speacial to me and will always be the case. I've owned one from the age of 17 and always have and always will ??

I'd be surprised if your friend is as fast as he thinks, what a lot of these hot hatches lack is long legs in their gearing (I admit to knowing nothing on the VR6)...he may be quick off the mark but bet he lacks in mid to top range....best not accept his challenge he may stop being your friend after...:)

What i should have said is work colleuge. I deffinately won't take him up on his offer and he can believe what he wants, I said to myself the same as you, he may be quick off the line, but I know mines very q for a heavy car and once she gets off the mark it doesn't stop pulling with the last £6000 worth of mods I did to it and I know that strangely after 100 it seems to get even quicker ?? These kind of people are the type that would risk life and limb just to impress where as I've never been that way and would let them get on with it and just enjoy my own speed to myself although I do enjoy when cars try to belittle me when they see my 1987 porsche and then I enjoy stretching it's legs and following it up with a smile and a wave ??

... Mind you it probably wouldn't cost £10k to replace your gearbox.

I'm inclined to agree with you. The way things seem to be going, assuming you could even find a gearbox, it might soon be more than £10K. [;)]

...You should make that move out to the sticks Pete.

I don't know. There's sticks and sticks. Where I now spend half my life Terry the Tangerine Truck is probably quicker from A to B than Beaky (because he is easier to manoeuvre into passing places). He is less incongruous, and more inclined to make people move rather than have them sit there and let me do all the work. I can also see further ahead and thereby better decide which passing place to choose. And finally, grass verges hold no fear what so ever. It's all a case of having the correct tools for the job.

It is but I'm 50 miles from London and 20 from Cambridge, plus there's miles of decent driving/riding/cycling roads on my doorstep. We moved out of London when I was a kid. I'd hate to live there now.

I love driving on Welsh roads..even those that are only wide enough for one vehicle...on such roads I drive very slowly but you do meet some fools driving far too fast who have no chance of stopping in time....luckily I haven't bumped into any yet, good thing as I don't have enough years left in me to spend them at 'her majesty's pleasure' the funny thing is it's usually those 4x4's who think that they can see the road who are the culprits for driving like idiots....in the interests of low-riding sports cars, I say ban them now for safety's sake...:)
