Where did they build them?

As I understand it, the 924 was built at Neckersaum, but the 944 was produced by Porschew in their own factory at Stutgart. Have I got this correct, all my books are still packed away after the house move.
 
You can tell from the VIN where they were built Paul. WPOzzz94zHN4 -for Neckarsulm: or WPOzzz96zMS8 for Stuttgart.

I read somewhere that the last 944's were also built at Stuttgart and those that were have the Vin number as per Simons post.

I think you are partly right - they were all assembled in Zulu-Land. Apart from the Cabrios, which were made in Cabriostan (which borders Afghanistan - can't beat the feel of shellfire in your hair on a warm day, eh?)

Oh, and the Turbos, which were made in, ummm, Tongo. Yes, Tongo. Porsche set up an assembly part there specially, on the outsikirts of the city of Ow-dee, which is why a lot of people thought that they were made by Audi.

924 Turbo engines were assembled in Stuttgart and then taken to the NSU factory. All other engines were built at Neckarsulm as far as I can recall...

As I understand it the 924 and 944 were both assembled in the Audi factory at Neckarsulm just 60km north from Stuttgart. Some later 944's (1992 year only I think) and the 968 were made at Zuffenhausen in Stuttgart.

Not sure about the engine mind, but considering it shares some of the machining in manufacture as the 928 engine then perhaps we can assume the 944 engine was also produced at the same place as the 928's?

Thanks all. I did root around the loft and find a book that gives a definitive answer. This will be published in the upcoming magazine shoot-out. Watch for Classics Monthly issues, probably November or December editions. [8D]

Porsche don't manufacture cars, they assemble them. Parts and engine components would have been manufactured at many facilities all over the world and the parts brought together at the assembly lines at either Neckarsulem or Zuffenhausen. They probably would have sub-conned the actual manufacture of key components into the VW/Audi parts maufacturing facilities. It is like most products these days. For example there are only three companies that actually manufacture LCD TV screens and all brands source from those three, so whether you've got a Sony, LG or any other brand the chances are they share the same screen.

I'm pretty sure from previous posts that all 924's were assembled in Neckarsulem and 944's were split across the two facilities as there was not enough capacity at either for 100% assembly. Does it really matter? I've never understood this inferiority complex people have about the 924's and 944's built by Audi. Doesn't make it any less Porsche in my mind - in fact i'd wager they were probably better put together as the Audi line would have handled a higher production rate therefore the guys were more practiced.

In these early days of Transaxle Porsches there was a lot more manufacturing than mere assembling within the Porsche factory.
The book "Projekt 928" and the excellent pictures featured suggest this.
 
Has anybody else ever noticed that on the back of the rear light cluster it's stamped VW with the 4 Audi rings........odd for a part that was only fitted to a Porsche ? [:)].......... puts on quilted jacket and bobble hat and leaves quietly [:D]

Ahhh ... that's what I thought; we're writing an article on behalf of McNulters here, aren't we?

Bit of a cheek, eh? PCGB - the club whereby you can write your own magazine articles which you then pay to read!

I'm in the wrong business, clearly. I need a money-making scheme like that which PCGB has ... that overdraft would evaporate in a second if I had one of those. And I may be able to afford something better than a poor man's Porsche! [:eek:]

So basically, Porsche didn't have the capacity to build the 911, 928 and 944 in the same factory, so they farmed out the 944 to be built elsewhere. As sales figures dropped in the early 90s, they started building the last of the 944s and its replacement, the 968, in the Zuffenhausen factory, as sales were low due to the recession, so the factory now had the capacity to build the 911 and 944/68 in the same factory.

Sound familiar? We're in a recession now and Boxsters are not being made built by Valmet anymore, IIRC, they're being built in the Zuffenhausen factory...
