You'll be happy with whatever 944 you end up with, so long as you pick one in good nick.
I started with an early model Lux and thought it was a revelation in handling and fun. I'd never driven anything quite like it. The interior wasn't a nice place though"”too early eighties for me. Too agricultural.
I got myself a late model Lux to replace it, with the poshest interior I could find (leather sports seats, etc). It was a tiny bit slower off the mark (heavier), but all the little niggles of the older car had been fixed (rust prone petrol tank replaced with a plastic one, windscreen wipers on the proper UK side, battery moved inside the car instead of getting wet under the bonnet, and so on). Just generally a much more civilised machine.
Then I got the itch for a bit more power. I looked around for the perfect S2, but found a Turbo instead. One test drive in the Turbo and I was hooked. There's nothing quite like the feeling of that old-school boost kick. It makes me grin every single time. Even a trip to the supermarket is an opportunity to hit the loud pedal and giggle like a schoolboy.
The S2 is every bit as quick as the Turbo, but the difference is in the way the acceleration feels. Smooth and controlled as the S2 may be, which may even make it quicker around a track in the right hands, but the Turbo plasters a stupid grin on your face. To me that's worth more.
