Which 993 for £30k?

I would say that you need to spend upwards of £40k for a decent LHD 993 RS, check the PP and specialist dealers for what is available right now. Paul McLean at GT Classics has a couple in stock and is very knowledgeable. His cars tend to be very good and in my experience, you will not find many dealers as straightforward to deal with as him.

Due to rarity, I would suggest there is less room to find a bargain but if someone really needs to seel it is always possible if you are flexible re spec, colour etc. He also acts as agent for H&S who source a number of cars from Germany for people here and may be able to tell you about duty/taxes/warranty etc.

You should also take a look at LHD 964 RSs which fall more within the budget you stated. Looks differ and slightly less road friendly than the 993 RS but huge fun especially on track and £10k less. There are quite a few people going to the Ace Cafe this evening, myself included, who between them have all of the cars you are thinking of. Definitely worth a trip if you are free, friendly bunch.

I recently bought a '96 993 Targa, 33k miles for inside your budget in a private sale. I had it inspected, and it seems very sound but could do with a bit of cosmetic tidying but nothing pressing i.e. door dings, stonechips on front.

I'd defo. recommend looking at a Targa- has a really unusual feel inside with the glass roof but with the convenience of a coupe.

The S's look absolutely great though.

I'm seriously considering a '96 993 Glass Targa. Condition is excellent - to the untamed eye - and has lots of bills/papers. It's done ~90,000 miles but at £24k I think it looks like good value especially as it will come with a bit of warranty.

I'll probably add 10k a year to the mileage so 2 yrs on at 110-120k I imagine it won;t be horrific depreciation.

What do you guys think?

I'll def pay for a PPI, I did when I spent £5k on a merc for Mrs OG! I'll have to find out more about Peter Morgan, time to do some searching, wonder if he comes up north.......

At that mileage I would be looking through the previous bills for evidence of clutch renewal (and possible dual mass flywheel renewal), brake disk renewal and shock absorber renewal . A decent PPI should be able to asses the current condition of the disks and shocks (shocks a little more tricky) but a clutch is much harder without paperwork evidence of replacment. I am sure other people can add things to check with a higher mileage car. It's also worth talking to some of the independents about what problems they see on higher mileage cars (knowledge is power and all that).

I would also be tempted to get a cylinder leakdown test (which I don't think somebody like Peter will be able to do as it needs to be done at a workshop). This does incurr additional cost over a PPI and isn't worth doing unless the rest of the PPI looks OK. It tells you much more about the condition of the engine. Also have the ODBII computer read for fault codes with the PPI.

The clutch has been replaced recently, not sure about the flywheel. It's also been serviced in the last few weeks and whilst I can't rememebr off hand what work was done there were a few items on the invoice.

Would I be better off getting it into an OPC for the PPI? From what I've read on the forum it appears that could be a bit hit and miss but I do take your point about the cylinder and ODBII tests.

Your budget should get you a really good 993 C2. I had a 964 and really enjoyed it but found the ride around pot-holed town roads a bit too unforgiving and it was expensive re maintenance costs. I have recently bought a 993 tiptronic and find I have the best of all worlds ------ easy to drive in traffic , excellent forgiving suspension, and being switchable transmission can still give a large slice of the fun-factor. Re buying, I got the seller (non-porsche garage) to have a full service carried out at their expense at an OPC who then gave it a warranty check-over. I then purchased a warranty from them (£725) and ended up with a vehicle fully serviced, fully checked out, and carrying a full Porsche warranty.
Porsche warranties are backed by Porsche and not an independent organisation and, in my opinion, worth every penny in an unknown first year of ownership.

Best of luck and as others have said condition should overide other factors such as mileage.
