Which brand of tyre do you recommend for 944

Don' t use Avons, The are rubbish! As soon as there illegal I' m going to try somthing better. No front end grip in the dry, over steer at low speeds in the wet!!
 
Eagle F1's, brilliant in the damp/wet.

I was so impressed with the F1's that I fitted them to my Delta Integrale as well, was not quite so impressed on the Integrale, I think this may be due to the Integrale not needing much help in the traction or handleing dept.

On a 90-91 944 Turbo what are the standard tyres sizes 16" rims?

What do you recommend? Do the tyres have to be N rated these days or was that just pre Z tyre designation?

Tyre width will depend on rim width, on Porsche wheels it has the rim width in the casting on the left of the tyre valve, the number to the right of the tyre valve is the offset in mm.

Assuming 7 inch fronts 205/55 VR
Assuming 8 inch Rears 225/50 VR

N rated tyres were tyres developed by the tyre manufacturer for use on Porsches. Synics would say that N spec tyres were only developed if the standard tyre was useless?

Thanks, yes but i thought the later model 944T had 8" front and 9" rear, could be wrong!!. Is there anyone with a late model 944T who can clarify what the standard tyre sizs were.

Agree about the N rating thing, I think today with tyre tecnhology as it is, it is not as relevant.

Hi Slim,

My drivers handbook states that the later Turbo's should have 7.5" rims on the front and 9" on the rear. The correct tyres for this are 225/50 ZR and 245/45 ZR, this is what I have [:D]

The N rating is extra to the Z or W rating, it applies to specific brands of tyre that were tested by Porsche on specific models. I think N rating was only started on 964's and 968's so they have never been tested on 944's and I would not worry too much about it. You could insist that you get an N rated tyre only to find out it was tested by Porsche for a 993 with all that weight at the back so is totally irrelavent for us 50:50 chaps. It gets even more complicated as there are different versions (N0, N1, N2 etc) as Porsche retest upgraded tyres over the years.

If you have a 996 or Boxster I would get the correct current N tyre but for us older types it is not relavent. A good Z rating is fine (all my humble opinion of course [;)] )
 
Thanks very much just what i wanted to know.

The car i am looking at has new Contis on the front, the rears have about 4mm left on them so they will be needing replaced befor the summer. I was thinking of the Toyos, as they seem to get a decent write up and dont cost mega amounts. I have heard that they do wear pretty quick mind.

I purposely did not mention brands as that is what I hoped the poll would reveal, but now that you have said you have new Conti's on the front I would say get Contis for the rear too. I have Conti's fitted on my Turbo and the rear 245's have lasted nearly 25k miles and that includes a couple of wet trackdays (where I couldn't use my track tyres). They are now down to 3mm so I'll replace them soon. They were under £100 each last time, fully fitted inc vat and balancing
 
Good news indeed, 25k miles at £100 per hoop. Not sure i will be able to get them for that price, best i have seen is about £125 each...

I was thinking of Toyos as they are £92 each!! And i am a tight git!![;)] But i really hate puting different tyre types on my car, much prefer to keep same all round. cheers. Will prob just go for the Conties..

That's what I last paid for Conti rears after a bit of haggeling.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about fitting different tyres front and rear as they do completely different jobs. Pirelli fit different tread patterns front and back as standard on performance cars now. I have been told that they don't consider it as important for the rears to have as good water clearing properties as the front as the front tyres have already squeegied the water out of the way. This way thay can concentrate on providing more grip at the rear to get the power down.

Thats a good point, would give me an excuse just to pop the Toyos on at £95 a corner.

The Uniroyal's feel 100% better and at £70 a peice (with my Bro's staff discount) they were a bargain [:D]

Region/National PCGB Supporter and PP advertiser Elite Garages have special PCGB rates for club members. They have a price list issued to the Sussex Region and have been bettering or matching most deals available on the web. I'm a great believer in giving business to those companies that give back freely to the club.

Dave Blackley is the club contact there call him on 0845 458 1080 and tell him you're a PCGB member. He knows his tyres and Porsches - most brands/sizes are in stock.

I think you'll find it was ZZ1s you had on not ZZR totally different tyre.

It just about had grooves - enough to be legal anyway - wouldn't want to drive it in the wet!

I've bitten the bullet and ordered a set for track days as they are around £300 a set cheaper than the Michelins! I'll try them on my first track day on April 12th.

Can you believe it!!!!

Went to the unit to do a bit of work on my other car and the lad next door collars me. He's been trying to catch me since the New YEar as he has a full set of Pirelli's (still with the bobbles on) from a 944 that he only wants £80 for.

Anyway, took them off his hands as spares / track tyres

PS They were definitely Avon ZZ1's, that I replaced, not the the new ZZR track/road type tyres.

Keep us posted on how you get on with the ZZRs, what sizes have you orderd? What cost and where did you get them. I am thinking about them for the road, i know i know they are not great in the wet, but i have see a few roports state that they(track day legals) are not as bad as some people make out. My car is a weekend only i dont drive that many miles, and i would be putting them on another set of wheels anyway.
 
Will do.

I've run Michelin Cups onthe road with few issues other than standing water but the ZZRs look like they would struggle in the wet. As soon as I get them I'll do a post.
