Which is best?

Hi, I am looking at buying my first 911 and have a budget of approximately 50k. I drove a C2S with PDK last week and loved it, I also drove the Cayman which was nice. I prefer the 911 due to being able to use the back seat occasionally. Is the C4S much better than the C2S? Is the power difference of 385 from the new 3.8 much more noticable over the 'old' 3.8 with 355 bhp? Is the tiptronic worth considering? So many questions, as I (literally) cannot afford to get it wrong.

No, yes, no.

IMHO C2S PDK is the best kit you can buy. Just pick a colour/cabin spec. you like. [:)]

I think you need to drive them to see which one you like. Everyone will have an opinion, but ultimately its your money and it will depend on how, where you drive, how often etc.

Having said that, I have a C4s with PDK and cannot fault the car, the gearbox is just amazing. I can't comment on the power difference as I tried a manual c4s with power kit and a c4s with pdk. The gearbox won it over. The fuel economy also amazes me - can easily get 30mpg.

So try the 2 and the 4 to compare and then try the different gearboxes. Whichever way, you should be a happy chap.

Easy answer - GEN 2 Turbo with PDK with the vector control and active engine mounts, now like me start saving and whilst your saving buy a Cayman S PDK and have some real chuckable fun.

I've spent many years emptying my bank balance to come to the above conclusion, and possibly Clive may support my thoughts with his route back to Turbo via some exotic machinery.

There all good, just get a 2 year warranty

Find a large, deserted roundabout and drive both C2 and C4 around it several times as fast as you are able - you'll soon see which is the better! [;)]

I think the best way to describe the difference is that the C2 offers a slightly lighter front end giving a wonderful steering feel... he C4 is heavier on handling and steering but does give a more sure footed experience in the wet and other not so nice road conditions..
It also has to be driven slightly different in approach- as does the 911 in general...
The C4 is also a wide body, so the look from the rear is that bit more....[8D] if thats your thing.

However I'm sure someone who couldn't be bothered to post prior will be along to tell me I'm wrong [;)]

...or wait a few months and you could probably pick up a GTS for £50K odd - Then the best of both worlds. [8D]

Hi Lancerlot - thanks for the advice. Are you sure that 911 GTS's will be as low as 50-odd grand in a few months? The OPC in Leicester can discount a new one by nearly 8k but surely it will be 2 or 3 yeears before they are going to be as low as 50-odd grand?

I've really no idea - it's all down to supply and demand, of course. [8|]

But they're already available at £70k or less so another £10 or £15K by the end of the year is likely I would have thought, particularly with the new 991 (997 replacement) being launched in September. [:)]

I think you will do very well to find a GTS for that money in the near future as they are probably a rarer breed. The topic of "which is best" is often raised here and the answers and preferences are as varied as the number of variants themselves. Try a few, compare and contrast for yourself and see if you can spot the differences at all to begin with!
There are low £50k C2S with PDK around (at Porsche Centres) and that would be my first choice. Sport chrono is a must with PDK and sports exhaust a nice option.
A late Gen 1 C2S with manual/sports exhaust/short shift would be my second choice. Either way 2WD is my preference in the Carreras. There are plenty out there to choose from (unfortunately!)[:(]

I see one. listed at GBP 78,990.

I'm interested to hear further if there are genuinely cars out there at GBP 70k.

I read a lot on the forums before I negotiated my deal (collect the car on Friday) and hope I did as well as the markets allow. I listened to some really good advice and in the end went for a 4 month old ex demo car with 3k miles. I cannot see how cars are available at 70k though, unless they have absolutely no options at all, in which case it is probably possible. I am yet to see a Porsche with no options on it yet though !
 
If I may take up more of your valued time gents - when you say try the C2S and the C4S, etc - how do I get more time in them? Do you suggest I go to lots of different OPC's and drive two at each? I have heard that some potential customers have managed to get a 36-hour test drive or an 8-hour test drive, has anyone any experiences they can share over this please?

I am serious about the purchase but I need to know that I am getting the right one and more-so, that it feels right that I am spending this money wisely.
 
When I bought my first 997 (C2S) the PC gave me a demonstrator for the day to have a play in. Unless someone on here has done it recently it's probably worth a ring round to ask. I would think if they see you as a genuine buyer then all things are possible. Which part of the country are you in John?
 
I am in Wellingborough in Northamptonshire. I tried Silverstone OPC at first but they were 'very busy' so suggested I take time off in the week to visit them !! I told them I needed to work for a living if I wanted a Porsche.
Then I tried Leicester and found Tom Livsey - who was very professional (so far). Anyone got any other good OPC experiences within 1 hours' drive from me ?

As you've already bought one, I don't suppose it matters much but there's one here that likely would come for £70K or less for a quick cash deal.

You just need to look around and negotiate hard. [8|]
