Which model should I buy?..

I look forward to reading your posts Pete, and agree with most of what you write. You obviously know plenty about the mechanical side on a 944 turbo, but since the introduction of hotter hatches like the Focus RS and the Golf R I wouldn't bet my house on seeing the likes of them off in a 944 turbo, particularly in the wet. The older we get, the faster we were [;)].
ahh..but don't forget my boys (all 4 of them) are fast Ford nutters, my eldest has the Focus ST, he's modified two, the current build will be over 400bhp and a good friend of mine has a brand new Focus RS, I, therefore, do speak with some experience on these matters, yes they would leave a standard turbo but not so against a modified car, even less so against mine. The other thing about the 944 is its stability at high speed, I have never felt the car was unstable at speed...150...160...170.....no problem. There is a good reason why back in the late 80's, early 90's Porsche designers were very happy to list the 944 turbo as the fastest car in the fleet, even faster than the 911 turbo...it's the cars ability to hold the road when pushed beyond most drivers abilities......they are truly wonderful cars to drive...as you know sir....:)

Yes they are great to drive Pete [:)], which is why I've resisted the temptation to buy something a lot newer and easier/cheaper to look after. Though you've got to put all that power onto the road in the winter, and TBH I'd much rather do that in my 12 year old 200bhp A4 S-line quattro Avant. I reckon on a slippery twisty B road where it's not possible to do much more than the national speed limit, any 944 turbo that wasn't on winter tyres would struggle to get past. In the dry most 150 bhp hatchbacks would probably see it off though [:D] .
 
I don't doubt that Paul, I chose my 'go faster' times very careful......always dry open roads....I no longer feel the need to race everything on the road, I leave that to younger folk, as my wife keeps reminding me...I drive like an old man these days....mind you, she is comparing that with my younger self so perhaps not like all old men....:) These days I'm more than happy to poodle along listening to the lovely burble, intake and dump to atmosphere sounds....helps keep me young.....:)
 
I began on bikes...my wife and I covered a fair few miles on a bike when courting...I often joke with my kids about their mother riding pillion wearing short mini skirts...things were very different back then, no full race leathers,,, I did wear a leather jacket with tassels..., we try not to talk about that these days though, along with high-heeled platforms (mine), boot lace ties and purple suits......:)
 
John's first paragraph reminds me of an early experience in about 1994 with my first 944, the 2.5 lux. Coming off a roundabout onto a dual carriageway and long left hand bend, had a hatchback trying to get up my exhaust pipe so floored it in 2nd in the inside lane, only for him to pass me and run away as if I was standing still. Last thing I noticed on the back of his car was "Type R" - Honda Civic.
 
When I was buying in 2006, the general advice was to buy on condition in preference to model or colour. I looked at lots of S2s and Turbos (similar price then!), and ended up with an S2. TBH I'd looked at one or two Turbos that, on reflection, I ought to have bought, considering the way their values have gone up.

However, the S2 was inspected by Peter Morris and, apart from re doing some rust repairs bodged by the selling dealer, the car has confirmed Peter's opinion and my buying decision. I still have the car, and enjoy driving enthusiastically where possible!!

I agree with the comments on buying a £3k 944...chances are it'll cost you another £4k to sort out, so you might as well buy something in good condition to start with!!

Dig that old gear out If you move house out to the sticks Pete, it's probably still all the rage there :ROFLMAO:.

Very true! Mine gets parked outside all year and gets driven all year round - and I still love it to pieces. Decent tyres on it though and it handles like a dream, whatever the weather.
