Which Oil

John just been snooping around and the concensus is that Halfords is a previous incarnation of Mobil 1 from a couple of years back so should be fine for our needs.

Extract from another site my buddy in the OIL bizz

Have a look at the API spec it may be an SJ as opposed to SL, although if it is SL that puts it on a par with current Mobil 1 as SL is the highest currently. However, Mobil 1 could still outperform the Halford's as the SL just means the oil must meet or exceed baseline values in the testing.
What year is the Porsche? If it is post 1990 then it should be ok on this or Mobil 1. Mobil 1 is probably the current all-round best performer, though

Sorry, that should read £32.99 for 4 litres of Moby 1 MS (and yes, I shouldn't have finished the bottle at dinner time! ... was good tho!)

SO ... Halfords is possibly Mobil 1, whatcha know? I always knew it was somebody elses oil under their name, and I have certainly used their 5/40 synth as a top up on my 968, as it matches the Shell helix synth 5/40 that was put in it at the OPC. 5/40 is the same as the Synta Gold that was mentioned earlier ... wonder who makes that?

Halfords here we come! [8D]

This is a close approximation to what is in the 944 handbook would guess the 968 one has something similar- even then (1990) it has 5W listed. When I spoke to mobil (about 2 years ago) they recommended Motorsport, but as I say with the latest runny stuff (tri synth) it stays in better than the earlier runny stuff (similar consumption to motorsport in my car)

For top-up purposes, I'm using MILLER's XSS Semi Synthetic 10W 40, which cost me £12 for 5 litres. Any views on this - I haven't seen MILLER's mentioned on here before but they are well known in motorsport circles.
According to their website the optimum oil for 968s is XFS 5W 40 Fully Synthetic.

not really the same sort of engine but I use the semi synthetic diesel in my nissan patrol seems to make good pressure, no bits on the drain plug etc. but it gets changed every 3,000 miles and there is 9.5 litres of it in there so it shouldn't have to work too hard.

I have used Mobil 1 in all of my now 3 968 CS cars. I have once again just had the oil change at JCT600 and at my request they used Mobil 1 0w-40w. I have not had any problems in the past in 10 years of owning different Club Sports.
I only use OPC for service and therefore use genuine oil filters.
I beleive that if you own and run a Porsche that you spend what is needed and do not worry about the cost. Should you have to watch and worry about every penny you spend buy a cheaper car. I am tired listening to people trying to save money. If you own a Porsche look after it and keep it as it left the factory. Someone will own it after you.

Having spoken to quite a few specialists including 9M and Specialist Cars of Malton they all concur that Mobil 1 is too thin for the CS and that it can cause various problems from hydraulic lifter noise to leaking seals they recommend a 10W or 15W40 or 50 synthetic.

However saying that my cars history shows it has been serviced with 0w30 Castrol SLX since new so go figure ?
