Which tyres

Hi Clive, How do you explain the advice given in Porsche's own TSB to the contrary - that in certain circumstances it is possible?

ORIGINAL: Lancerlot It is on a Turbo 'S' if you want to stay within Porsche specification. Regards, Clive.
well to be in speciification then it applies to all 997s not just the Turbo S but being "in specification" isn't the be all either. If I wanted the warranty I'd follow Porsche advice on this. If not then I'd be happy with an informed decision all of that said I did wonder what I'd have done in Toms position in Germany, can't just rock up to an OPC with my tyres

lasted 8000 miles plus 5 track days though and have 3-4mm left but coming off to use again in track and fit new boots for my european trip in june will fit michelin ps sports 2 thanks for comments david

ORIGINAL: Rodney Naghar Hi Clive, How do you explain the advice given in Porsche's own TSB to the contrary - that in certain circumstances it is possible?
Apologies Rodney, I overlooked your last post. That TSB does not come up on any current UK Porsche system and looking at those tyre sizes, they are not 997 Turbo or Turbo 'S'. The latest approved wheels and tyre technical pages as of MY10 for 997 Turbo & Turbo 'S' come with all the usual warnings not to mix manufacturers or N ratings. Regards, Clive.

Latest news from Michelin is that there were a few technical issues that resulted in some delays, but the Michelin Pilot Supersport tyre has now been homologated with an 'N' rating for Porsche. 991 production has already commenced and 997 production will follow, either towards the end of this year or the beginning of next. Regards, Clive.

Has anyone heard an update on this? My 997.1 C4S needs some new shoes, but I'd like to wait for Super Sports if their arrival is fairly imminent, otherwise it will be back to the PS2s for me, having had Bridgestones last time around (purely for reasons of availability, as I'd been very pleased with the previous 2 sets of PS2s). Thanks :) Sidicks

A lot depends on what characteristics you want from the tyres. Unfortunately, Porsche don't reveal this information and there are no meaningful comparative tests. In any event these are often subjective. The only objective thing I did derive is that the Michelin PS2s are marginally quieter than Bridgestone and Pirelli, based on noise tests. I would expect the Super Sports to be noisier.

I was told that the Supersport is a dual compound tyre. I can understand that on a motorcycle race tyre but can't understand why it is an advantage in a car tyre. The guys on the Michelin stand at the National Event last weekend could not explain - any ideas?

Ralph, I too had a chat with a chap on the Michelin stand who told me that the outer quarter of the tread is a race-derived carbon black-reinforced elastomer which gives high levels of grip when cornering whereas the inner three-quarters of the tread comprises elastomers designed to promote wet road grip. Hence the dual-compound nomenclature. Jeff

ORIGINAL: ralphmusic That makes sense, thanks
And there was me thinking that the whole width of the tyre gave grip while cornering...........[;)][:D] So will the outer 1/4 and inner 3/4 wear at different rates then, I wonder?

You do all realize that as soon as the Super Sports are N-rated then they are going to be impossible to get hold of? Porsche will start putting them on 'some' 991s, then a lot later they will do the N-rating for the 997 sizes (I assume once Michelin stop making the PS2). I don't think they will ever be fully certified on the 997 though. I got my PSS within 2 days of ordering, were cheaper than PS2s, and they have been simply awesome - without any N-rating... Personally if I wanted to retain my warranty and wanted some PSS - I would go speak to my dealer and ask them if they will make allowances on the warranty if the same size tyres are adhered to as for the PS2. Same kind of thing as fitting front grill mesh to protect the rads - hopefully common sense prevails.
