Quite agree with this, but it's more than just a one-off drive that gets them fully stretched; it's regular driving, for long enough to get everything hot. My S2 was quicker to start, pulled harder and more smoothly, used less fuel and felt more sprightly when she was being driven 40 miles every day. Now I work from home and driver her once a week she is sluggish to turn over in the morning, sulky to fire up, uses more fuel and is less smooth on the road (in all ways). A one-off long drive will help, but regular long drives help far more.ORIGINAL: Indi9xx
I have always said that pre Boxster/996 Porsche models are a bit like race horses, they need not only exercising on a regular basis, but also seem to appreciate having their legs seriously stretched once in a while.
I could understand if they were ok within 5 mins, as I would put that down to purging air from the fuel rail and lines, the plugs fouling and then cleaning, the pistons rings re-lubricating and moving freely, lifters filling ect... But they really do seem groggy for the first 20 miles or so after being laid up for more than a week or two.. They may seem to drive ok for that first 20 miles, but I can really feel them waking up.
And no, I can't explain it either.
A heated garage may be the best investment a 944 owner could make but for some of us it's just not an option. A garage in central London would cost about 80 times what my S2 is worth!
