Why so many wheels?

Kussmaul claimed 3 seconds a lap less on 18" rubber around the Porshe test track than previous 17".
 
18" on the Cup is the way to go Melv. I am selling my 17" Cup 1s and going for 18" Speedlines.

Michelin can only supply 18" slicks I was told at PCF Days. So made my mind up.

must have dreamt about the dunlops! The tyre/wheel weight of the 18's was greater which would contribute to the stress problem.
The better availability of 18" tyres was certainly a factor. Porsche adopted 17" wheels quite early whereas I think most other GT's went straight to 18's leaving 17" for the small sports & saloons where a much reduced range of sizes was ok
