Will It Get Quicker

ORIGINAL: Andrew Killington

Isn't there some truth that the ECU can reprogramme itself depending on the type of driving. If the car has been used briskly[:D] the ECU remembers this and similarly if the driving has been less spirited it adjusts to this driving style.

I suggest you disconnect the negative terminal on the battery (remember to leave the ignition switched on so the alarm dosent go off) for a couple of mins, also make sure you have the radio code).
As soon as its connected again make sure your in the position to go for a proper full throttle thrash. You WILL notice the difference that resetting the ECU makes.

I hope this convinces JCB that miles do loosen a motor up, and lead to better performance.

First a subjective observation of my experience with my 987S and my previous 530i and before that a 325Ci. My "seat of the pants" meter tells me that all three of these motors ran better (ie more horsepower) after say 10,000 km: more willing, even hungry to rev.

Something a bit more objective might help. My Landcruiser Turbo diesel could not hold fifth gear up a long incline (about 7kilometres) I take every day when it was new. After 10-15,000 km it holds fifth easily. This is probably more about developing additional torque through use, but I believe the principle would also express itself in horsepower terms.

Not convinced at all Cobber!

You had me going for a minute with the "developing additional torque" but where is the science? [:)]
