Whilst I totaly agree keeping it one big happy Boxster family can someone explain why there has to be a 991 register [&o]

Despite being an ex Boxster Register Sec and 997 Reg Sec I have not got a clue, other than it is all bollitics. [:D]

Why for example am I not allowed to be Macan Reg Sec until I have one in my garage, when the 991 Reg Sec was RS months before delivery.

re: 991

Two plausible reasons, the 'management' at the time for their 'own' reasons the other Porsche Cars GB wanted the 991 register set up. With the later didn't something similar happen before?

Bit late on this thread, but just to lay rest to any conspiracy theories - I volunteered to moderate a 991 section of the forum when there were a number of 991 related threads running on the 997 register. No Porsche GB influence to my knowledge. I was subsequently asked by the then RD to take on the RS role as well.

The 991 forum is a bit quiet as there are only a handful of owners registered with the Club so far, but I'm sure that will build over time. Part of the appeal of the various 911 model forum are the events organised for like minded owners. If the range was condensed there would be too much pressure on the number of participants on individual events, particularly driving ones.

Actually I believe that the RS wasn't put into place until the model was officially announced as a model... the Macan is still an unconfirmed rumour at this official stage. You could ask for a register if you wanted one and certainly an area on the forum, if someone wanted to mod it I'm sure..

The Macan has been officially announced by Porsche

Porsche publically confirmed production of a sub-Cayenne 4x4 in 2010 (and released the design sketch, right), and production will start at the company's Leipzig plant (which builds the Cayenne and the Panamera saloon) in 2013. We hear Porsche plans to build 50,000 Macans each year, so €500m is being invested in a new assembly line and paint shop. Porsche says it should create 1000 jobs at the factory in the east of Germany. They even has an official website:

So what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I think it makes sense for each generation of 911 to have its own register, with there being so many and over such a long period of time. When the boxster has been around half the time of the 911 (well, less than half, whenever the time is right!) then I think it will make sense to have a separate register for the different generations. For now, the majority of people talking about the 981 will be Boxster enthusiasts i.e. 986/987 owners or previous owners, comparing the 981 to the previous model, alongside a relatively small number of 981 buyers/owners (which, to be fair, is true of how the 991 chat started on the 997 register, but has then become fairly quiet on its own register). Therefore, for the Boxster I think there's no harm keeping it all togther for a few more years. At least the current register isn't called 986/987 like the 997 register, which correctly exists and is named separately from the many 911 generations before it and so the pattern has to carry on in terms of the 991 getting its own register straight away. Also, as has been touched on above, things like having a very quite register section in Porsche Post will be a waste until the numbers are greater.
