Windscreen wiper blades

Finally, I've had time to fit and test the new blades. Wow, what a difference. Full story on the blades is posted here.

On the arms though, spoke to the part dept at East London and they say most definately the 993 and 964 arms are different, and a lot more expensive too. Unfortunately, they didn't have any in stock to compare though. I can confirm that I have 964 double spring, part numbers as above from Steve.

All I need do now is big it a go in the rain as washer jets seemed to have proved the point but I'll feel happier once I know I can see in the lashing rain.

Rgds,
Kevin.

When I had new blades on my car they worked perfectly for the first 3 or 4 usages, but then went back to the same as before they were replaced, i.e. leaving that unsweped area directly in the line of sight. I hope this doesn't happen to you and you make some excellent points in your piece about the differences between the 2 blades.

As previously mentioned, when I got my car back from restoration, as the screen had been removed & refitted, the problem of the unswept area has disappeared, for the time being...

Good report Kevin - and very useful. Not only can you now see properly, but you've saved 52 grams in weight. Result!

Thanks.

I always used cheapo Halfords blades which are more flexible than the Bosch ones - they don't last so long but they do work better for a while.

Very informative article Kevin. I can see a run on OPC blades for 964's flying out the doors of Main Dealers.
Note to Parts Manager - Restock 964 wiper blades.

I have the blade lift right in my line of vision too! It sounds like the checklist is:
1) new wiper blades from OPC
2) new wiper arm from OPC (with double spring)
3) GTechniq / Rainex / ...
4) New screen

I tried GTechniq and a new screen, didn't help. I will try the cheaper option of new blade and arm...

I've used Rainex but personally don't like it as I found it smears.
Have to make sure you spray the glass with a little water before polishing the Rain-ex off. Comes up as clear as a bell then. Use plenty of clean and dry paper too. The 'blue rolls' of paper - the sort you find in a workshop, or the larger type used in a doctor's surgery are particularly good for glass cleaning [;)]

I've not found rain-x as effective on the 964 as I was expecting. The upright windscreen would suggest plenty of airflow.....but I think the wipers probably cause too much turbulence.

I fitted OPC wiper blades about a 2 years ago - never looked back. Night and day compared to the previous Bosch ones.

ive used rainex on all my cars brill stuff try it !

Rainex is really old hat, and in comparison to Nanolex or GTechniq not even worth the effort.

What really has me surprised is that no-one here has even bothered to try these new products, the G1 on my Audi lasts for about a year, ever get that performance from Rainex? thought not. Time to move on I feel.

Kevin
Rainex and not Nanolex or GTechniq? Cost!! A tiny 30ml bottle of Nanolex costs a whopping £30. GTechniq half that price, but seems a lot of faff to put the stuff on - using three different bottles of fluids.

I've never had a problem with Rainex. A couple of well applied coats can last at least three to four months......and a 200ml bottle costs only £6.75. Bargain!

Amanda.

Not an apples to apples I'm afraid.

One small bottle of G1 will do windows front and rear on two cars and lasts for over a year.......in my experience, so not quite the same.

Bargain?

I'm a cynical old f**t these days - call it the onset of impending middle age. [;)] I watched the online videos, but I'm always sceptical of manufactuers demos and claims.

964 wipers are a 1960s design - they will never work properly. As said above, when everything is brand new they are "acceptable" - for a 60s car[;)].

Call them life enrichment, that makes it easier.
