windscreen

It was my understanding that the screen was cut out! Not a pleasant thought!
What i can't understand is why the cut has to be made past the glass againts the body work where the knife is almost certain to catch the paintwork. Surely, if the edge of the seal that overlaps the screen edge was cut first to expose the windscreen edge the screen could then be pushed out from inside the car. The remainder of the seal then pulled from the aperture. The recess cleaned (not with a knife!!) New screen and seal replaced. Hey presto!

I don't know if it's down to a lack of knowledge of the way the screens are mounted, carelessness or just a plain "couldn't give a monkeys because when the rust comes through in a few years time I'll be long gone" type attitude but obviously my experiences indicate that it's not just one or two rogue fitters at work here.

The last bodyshop I used told me that they've had to repair rust to windscreen surrounds in quite a few modern cars (only a couple of years old) that have had their screens replaced, so that probably rules out that the fitter didn't understand how the 993 screens were fitted. Time is probably the biggest factor against the job being done correctly - they are under pressure to get as many screens done in a day as they can. Not an excuse, only a reason.

I never pursued with the previous bodyshop as my experience of these things tends to be that they deny all knowledge and I'm left feeling even more frustrated. For example, when I went back to the approved bodyshop to get the rust attended to after it re-appeared the first time they finally only agreed to fix it as a "goodwill gesture" and when I went back with the delaminating screen they couldn't find any record of them having replaced it. They only agreed to replace it after I should them their original receipt.

The last bodyshop I went to (not an approved bodyshop) were really good. Although the price doubled they did a huge amount of additional work that they didn't charge me for. Including rectifying work that another approved bodyshop had done wrong - don't ask that's another story.

It could be that I'm just a bit too fussy of course [8|]
