New member

i have been deciding what i will do this year and with the mot in a few weeks i will see what that brings up,,all advisorys were attended to and apart from needing a bearing for front drivers side then if all ok i will go onto a new fuel filter and a proper look at the fuel lines,,,,,
Just before summer its cambelt,,water pump,,camchain,,etc, etc time,,
last cambelt change was in 2014 so not much mileage since the last change and cambelt looks in fine fettle but the three years are up so it will need to get changed,,,,,
a few bits painted like the bonnet ,,,,,,
that should do it for the time being,,,,,last owners very last big bill last year mentioned the fuel lines and filter but he decided not to add this to his already large bill so i wlll get those attended to,,,,,,
should get a few years before i decide to have a windows out job ,,,,,we shall see,,,
anybody else having major work this year?
a very happy and healthy 2017 to everyone,,,jasonp

Afternoon Jason, you have a list there! For me this year, its having the bottom of the arches doing, both sides, and sills. Also total strip and repaint. After that a new hood inc rear screen.

At the tail end of last year, she had all belts, new chain, slipper pads, water pump, rear brake lines, tyres, CV boots, new front screen, new head lightbulbs, new tailored mats inc boot mat, service, and coolant flush & re-fill.

Should be like a new car when its completed!

I am then thinking (only thinking mind) to sell and purchase a 911 cab. A 997 or 996.

Hi Jason

Sounds like a good plan for the year, it's amazing just how much work these old girls need to keep them in good fettle, I think that I have the corrosion sorted on mine now but I'm sure that some will return in another 10 years or so. I will have two years on the belts come May so will plan to change them later this year, brakes will need doing at some point and I must fit a new heating matrix. While the dash is out for that I'll take advantage and recover the dash and centre console in leather, gear gaiter too, I have all of the parts ready to fit, well not the matrix...need to source one of those. Mechanically the car is in very good shape, just needs a little cosmetic TLC although she does still look good from the outside..:)

Now I just need to make sure that I live somewhere where I can actually drive the thing, London is getting very 'anti traffic' no matter what you drive, if the new mayor has his way it could even be an issue going to the Ace cafe meets as all cars will have to pay the £10 congestion plus £12.50 pollution charge on top for each time you enter the North and South circulars, the Ace may just be counted as outside but it's going to be a close thing and who knows what happens after 2020??

Happy New Year

Pete

My old man moved out of London over 50 years ago. I'm never going back.

Hiya Al,,,

you have covered all the bases there,,,,

mine had a bottom third re-paint with new plastic arch covers and stone guards just before i bought her so i will do the bits that i [and the workshop] feel need it, ,,dying to put new mats in but will wait until the works finished,,og mats over £100,,,probably play safe and get them in black rather then blue or another colour,,,,,,

Be worth a premium with all that work Al ! should you decide to sell as there dont seem much out there apart from high price turbos,,,,

all the best with the work,,,,,jasonp

thanks Pete,,,

driving in central London is becoming a nightmare and please dont get me started about parking fees!,,,,,,

a bit of work for me this year but i will feel much more confident when the chaps i have been using for years have completed the belt/water pump/tensioner changes etc plus a few little easy fixes for the interior and having them oversee any cosmetic work,,,,

i always find it very reassuring when belts and the other engine bits are completed and knowing its all been correctly carried out,,

Sounds like your father saw the "writing on the wall" many years ago and i can imagine not wanting to come back once we do move!, apart from visiting family,,,,,,,jasonp

It's a mystery to me why anyone would choose to live there, especially if they're into cars or bikes.

It's a funny one; I always have been very into cars and came to London under sufferance over 20 years ago to study. I'm now still here, married, own a house here, am part of a church here, run a (very London-centric) business here and couldn't imagine living anywhere else. The traffic is a vast annoyance as are the costs of anything motor-related but they aren't enough of a reason to get out. I guess London gets under your skin after a while and there is more to life than cars. I could never have imagined I could write a sentence like that 20 years ago but it's true.

In mitigation, you don't need a car in London (we live in Zone2 and my S2 is nothing more than a toy), and there are roads out of London to other places which are much more car-friendly. I do more miles each year on a bike than I do in a car and work from home, so I'm lucky. If I had to drive in London as part of my job I suspect my outlook would be different.

Back to the topic in hand: Jason, that's a good old list. 944's do take a fairly high level of input and even a good one will only remain that way if it is shown love on a regular basis.

Oli.

yes it is oli but like i mentioned i will feel much better knowing the chaps who looked after my previous s2 and other cars are doing this work and it will be a much nicer car once the bits and pieces are finished,,,,,to keep the car up to the standards of my last then it does cost a few quid each year but i dont do any of my own spannering as you know so i am prepared for that ,,i think lol,,,,,jasonp

Of course there's much more to life than cars. I look out of my windows over miles of fields and woods, plus I can be in Cambridge in 20 minutes or London in 50 if I want a taste of traffic jams or smog. And miles of great driving/riding road are 10 minutes away.

You must live pretty close to me (Saffron Walden)

Near Huntingdon. I'm sure if someones worth millions there's some great places to live around London. Homes Under The Hammer shows me I'd be living in a much smaller house though.

I forgot to mention and in relation to Petes comments about recovering his dash in leather,,,

just before xmas i rang Southbound and had a long chat about recovering and Southbound only recover in black leather and have no bookings for 2017,,,,chap went on to inform me that they will probably put the prices up for dash recovering because of " the amount of work involved",,,,,

my dash is fine at present but i noticed no tints like my last except for along the top of the front windscreen and i was curious about the options,,,Southbound would need the car for 3-4 days to complete the work,,,,,,jasonp

Saffron walden and huntingdon is not far from me either. I'm about 30-40mins from Cambridge.

i have a mamoth job to do this year or within the next 3-6 months actually as I'm moving house around then and I have my 944 turbo engine in bits all over my garage floor waiting to give it a full rebuild including A few custom upgrades such as racing conrods, pistons, and crank scraper. Just waiting on my short block to have the cylinders honed down and wet liners installed then lightened flywheel, and balancing of crank ect so I can begin.

I still need to buy a load more seal kits, bearings, clutch ect and it's not exactly come at the right time to move house, so I'll be all Guns blazing hopefully in the next 3 weeks if all is ready?

One thing i know for sure is that I can't believe that the parts to do this full rebuild have added up to a whopping £6000 it's truly crazy!

And most of the major stuff like water pump, belts and pulleys, plug leads, rotor, distributor cap and a few performance parts, tyres, fuel lines, breaks, discs, brake lines, performance exhaust I'd already fitted a few years back.

There's still more I'd like to replace around the engine but that will have to wait, it just never ends!

I remenber reading that that someone on a American forum wanted to do a full rebuild of his 944 engine for £1500 and got told there's no chance of that but he was addiment he would make it and he also wanted some crank work done😳 Well now I know how much the parts will be and they were right telling him no chance.

I havnt had my car on the road for a few years now and I truly miss it as it was always my one thing that would unwind me going out at night for a drive on my own. Can't wait to hear that engine in a tunnel again 😊 Or even just hear and drive the car again..... it all seems a distant memory at the moment to me 😩😌

Hi daniel

yep nothing is cheap when rebuilding a 944 engine and it's not worth cutting corners with cheaper parts such as aftermarket bearings etc.... my rebuild was around £10k and this is only a small part of what's been spent on the car during my long ownership, like you say, 'it never ends'. Now that my car is back on the road, I don't rag it anymore, took me 4 years to get her back on the road and like you I missed her greatly and since I'm getting on a bit (56) and don't have the agility or strength to do big jobs on the car I'll be gentle with her with just the odd occasion of a heavy right foot, trouble is feeling that boost is very addictive...:)

good luck with the rebuild...

I'd be wary about having wet or dry liners fitted unless you have a machine shop with a well proven record of doing it on 944 blocks. Serdi or Capricorn can machine the Alusil block correctly and matching oversize Wossner pistons aren't that expensive for the 2.5 block. Re the crank scraper I'd check to see if the turbo sump has the same baffle/scraper the 2.7/S2 sumps come with as standard.

Cheers Pete, I'm sure we will be in touch for some questions when I start😉

Hi blade 7,

yes my engine is with Serdi Uk and they have also sold me the race pistons which I can't remember the name of right now, as mine were damaged and he doesn't trust the look of the standard conrods and I'm in process of finding some to replace them in racing form.

Serdi is also doing the balancing and lightening of he flywheel ect ect.

Regarding the scraper and my sump, I think I may have those flaps to scrape the oil but this crank scraper is much closer fit and will make a much bigger difference because of it, it seems? (Thanks Pete you made me purchase this from America after reading your rebuild 😉 And I'm really looking forward to feeling the difference)

Daniel

As Serdi know how to refinish Alusil is there a reason you're having liners fitted ? We're thinking about moving too, if we find the right place with a double garage I'll build a 3.0 engine.
