work being carried out in 2017 [mot in a couple of weeks]

nice! I must say I've never driven a 928 although the GT is one of my top 5 cars that I'd like. did you ever buy yourself a 924? I've also never driven an s2 but always read about the turbo and how if you want more power just buy a turbo, so one day I finally did and it's one of those great cars that never let me down, but once you start the p mods and feel the difference it is just so addictive as every time it feels as though you've installed a different engine in the same shell and you just want more and more as time goes on.

I remember bringing my turbo all the way from up north some 4.5 hours driving each way and it was winter with ice and snow. I followed my best man which is a renowned pertrol head and I followed him back and I remember the screen was getting so salty and smeary and I had run out of washer fluid, so my best man had to get close to my bumper with his car on the motorway and put his washer jets on so that I could catch some spray on my windscreen to be able to see 😳. It was tough but we did it.

as soon as we got closer to home and the icy conditions seems to be melting into cold water on the roads, so in the bendy back roads I decided to put my foot flat whilst in 3rd doing about 35mph......well bloody hell after driving my 163bhp 944 lux thinking that was fast this thing turns into a rocket and I felt on cloud 9 and just couldn't believe I had bought this car at long last and that was bod bog standard and nicely cared for, everything worked from the get go.

All i I can say Jason is im sure glad I bought mine when I did as the way my family is growing I really doubt I could afford a decent one now!

i wish you good luck in finding a good one and as they say buy the best you can afford and one things for sure, if it's a decent one, it will be your favourite I bet you😉

My family had all sorts of super cars whilst I was growing up, ferraris porsches, fast amgs, ect . i even have a cousin that had a lamborgini contache when I was 16 and I've drove them all, I even rented a Lamborghini for 5 days for my wedding as a present to myself being such a car nut, and hand on my heart, as soon as I drove my 944 turbo and floored it through the gears I really really missed it and apart from the noise and the Lamborghinis looks, I didn't miss it one bit. 😊

I hope you get one.

Daniel

Daniel,,,,

i never owned a 928 and i recently bought another s2 that i will get in to good shape in the next year but thanks for the advice but no way am i in the market for a turbo and i was curious about the mod side as so many people seem to do it,,,,

maybe a promix chip for my s2 i havent decided yet,,,,

regards jasonp

Hi Jason,

i see...well I've no experience with s2s just my lux in non turbo form, but I'm sure if you as on here if a chip for your s2 is worth it someone will advise you and give there experience.

I dont one know if you have dealt with him yet but Andy at Promax is a real nice a helpful guy, I have dealt with him for years and also had my car up there for must of the day setting up my geometr/alignmen. He's fantastic with knowledge and honest, he will tell you what he can do for you. I'm not sure but I think he offered a straight through middle section exhaust and a chip for yours but may be wrong?

i wish you all the best with your s2s and congratulations!

Hi Dan

Just noticed your last reply to Paul re JMG, I have no experience of them but note you said JMG chip?... does this mean that it was an off the shelf chip programmed for the parts fitted or was it a custom map done on the dyno? If a matched chip can I suggest that you go the custom map route this time around, talk to Wayne Schofield, he's the best. I note that there isn't a MAF or MAP unit in your list, I'd suggest that you add this to your shopping list, the standard AFM unit isn't the wisest thing to use on heavily modified cars. There are a number of types available these days, personally even though it's been going some years now I don't think that you can beat a Vitesse MAF+ kit+piggyback, tell John the spec of your car and he will write a chip that the car will run on perfectly first time and will be safe until you can get it custom chipped properly. I still haven't got around to seeing Wayne for my tune, however, the car runs perfectly on John's map with masses of power and a perfectly even idle. One day I'll get around to fitting those 80lb injectors , switching John's chip for mild modified ignition(there are 8 maps on the chip, one says 'aggressive':)...) and get Wayne to custom map it on the dyno for max power. .

That's assuming I don't get too old first....:)

Pete.

Hi pete,

i have just just read through the description of what the vitesse maff kit offeres, and I now fully understand what your saying and why I need it next! ( thanks Pete 😩😉) it actually sounds great and what my next and probably final power mod will be as I feel after all the monet and time I've put into modding my turbo, this kit along with Waynes final setting up would finish it all off and make me at peace. I think I could get some seriously nice fiures from my engine once I have this and get it set up by Wayne.

I can can understand more now how these guys developing different chips work and also how important this vitesse kit really is to us that have pliers so many extra power mods, it seems to be the cherry on the cake, for me anyway!

Am am I right in saying that the piggy back system is there as a safety future to work along side the upgraded true reading maff, in order to set and bring back your over boost protection to what you decide to set max boost pressure at ? In order for it never to be able to spike it something fails and cause a dangerous air and fuel mixture?

Hi Daniel

Sorry if I'm helping you spend more money..944T's truly are money pits...:) In answer to your question re 'piggyback' The Vitesse MAF+ itself once programmed by John to match your car will run great and make better/safer use of the mods fitted, however you will not be able to do a custom map by someone like Wayne without the piggyback. This is hardwired into your system so that with the use of a 'laptop' you can write directly to the board and adjust the engine to perfectly match your mods and thus get a good bit more power. So for my first dyno with Wayne before I had the Vitesse Wayne had to open the DME, remove the chip and custom write and then burn his own to be put back into the DME. At the next session with him, all he had to do was plug in a laptop and using the software provided by Vitesse change the parameters

So for my first dyno with Wayne, before I had the Vitesse, Wayne had to open the DME, remove the chip and custom write and then burn his own to be put back into the DME. At the next session with him, all he had to do was plug in a laptop and using the software provided by Vitesse change the parameters on the engine to get a perfect AFR for any given throttle position or load on the engine. This is what takes the time and skill, spending hours going through each gear from idle to 100% throttle ensuring the fuel mixture is spot on for any given condition, you could also increase max rpm for the redline cutoff.

Now this was when I had the older Vitesse, John's new unit includes more options than before and most importantly ignition change for when you want really serious power and a boost limiter. John will write maps to suit your needs for the ignition settings, I can't remember what mine are but he does give details on a chart that he sends with the chip, don't lose it as I don't think that he holds copies, could be wrong? The map for max power as set by John on my chip says something like 'Most aggressive ignition setting' and IIRC gives details of angle, which injectors and Vitesse options employed.

As you have noted the new unit brings back a fully operating 'boost protection' (IIRC needs piggyback) that makes life a little less worrying but this won't fully protect you from a spike, spikes are different things, yes it will cut boost but the boost may exceed your safety setting before it does so, hence why it's called a spike. On my car I use the APEXi EBC and can thus set 'duty cycle' to greatly reduce lag, however, in doing so the boost will be able to go higher than the max setting on the EBC, it won't be able to go higher than the Vitesse boost protection, though.

To explain my setup, I have the EBC set with two maps for boost, iirc A is for 1BAR and B is for 1.3 BAR and the Vitesse overboost is at 1.5BAR although I should reduce this but rarely push the car hard so haven't bothered yet, redline is set around 6800rpm. As already stated with the duty cycle set high to reduce lag the boost can exceed the two EBC settings, however I have an independent 'stepped boost gauge' that I have set to give an audible warning when it hits 1BAR and so can immediately back off knowing that I am well within the safety margin, it also records so I can check what boost it actually hit before I lifted the throttle.

Hope that explains a little, there's a hell of a lot to the Vitesse MAF+ unit, one extra that I plan to get from John is his Knock monitor system so that I know from this if there has been any knock no matter how small which wouldn't be felt in the car but may have been picked up by the knock sensor and thus reduced power. With the monitor installed, I'd know about it and be able to investigate how and when?

Pete

Hi Pete,

really i I have to thank you for making me aware of this and what Wayne and John can do, which for me as I said is another and the final level of power mods that I would want. Let's just say my own set up only hit 375bhp ( I'm more interested in the torque but let's just say 375bhp) I think knowing that I have it at 375bhp and working to it's tip top safe tuned state would make me feel very comfortable knowing my investment is now safe and true.

The gauges that you have sound great and it's something I was hopping to get more of like the one that goes into the exhaust to monitor the fuel mixture but when this hapoened to me just after all that work and money, I've obviously had to start to rebuild the engine to get it back breathing again so I have a little while yet till I can go down those enjoyable roads! The only good thing is I did obviously buy and install a true boost gauge because I wanted to make sure I was set on 18psi of boost.

Th boost guage you have that I'm assuming beeps when you hit your preset figure, which make and model is that as I think I would like to get one of those also for my main one so I can set it just a bit higher say 19psi which would help me set my mbc up for now, as it is extremely hard to do as it obviously creeps above in some gears and is hard to see whilst driving and depending on the friends you ask to help watch it too, it's also hard relying on someone to spot it raising above a set pressure, as I've been down that road before And this would be of great great use for me.

We really must stop talking like this Pete as I've already been looking at putting more on one of the credit cards I don't want to use😩😆it's all good stuff !

Hi Daniel

Sorry for late reply..I've been busy doing some machining in the workshop and have been in and out checking the forum.. done for today , will finish tomorrow...:)

375bhp is nothing to sneeze at, that's more than I had before the latest mods, regarding the boost gauge this is the one that I have http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/52mm-Blue-Stepper-Motor-Warning-Turbo-Boost-Pressure-Gauge-BAR-With-Warning-/282325828839?hash=item41bbee44e7:g:0DYAAOxygPtS692o there are other makes but this has served me well and probably about mid range for price. This is where it sits in the car

Very much in my face along with the Innovate wideband gauge, I couldn't quite work out what you meant about the exhaust fuel monitor, I'm hoping that you do already have one fitted, I wouldn't recommend driving a modified car without the AFR displayed at all times. As an example, I was on holiday last year touring the great roads around North Wales when I noticed that the AFR reading had changed? (15 and 16's showing under load)being many miles away from both home and a laptop I needed to adjust the fuel pressure to bring it back within a safe range. It cleared by itself a few days later and I reduced the fuel pressure back to 3 BAR, I'm not really sure what happened?...bad fuel perhaps or just a blip in the system, anyway the car responded to the extra fuel and ran fine, it had been pulling back which was what brought my attention to what the AFR was actually showing under load.

No harm in asking questions, I asked plenty when I started this game....:)

Pete

Thanks Pete,

yes it it is indeed the wideband that I was talking about! Seems I need to put that on the rebuild list!

I have thought allot that I'm sure i shoukd have one of these, but just goes to show I've learnt so much in the short time I've been on this forum....still can't quite figure out why I've never found it all these years considering I bought a 944 for my first. At when I was 17 and have been buying the porsche911 world magazines nearly every month scanning for 944 articles!

youve helped me allot so far pete and it's all really helped with knowing how to finish my plans with my turbo.

Thanks so much for that

Daniel

Car has been booked in for sat week,,,,chaps will have her for a week whilst we are away,,

mot,,front bearing,,fuel filter,,fuel lines [hoping that the last owner had these attended to but not according to the last big bill so guess they will need attention],,,couple of small jobs for the interior,,,,,,cambelt check,,,and anything the mot might chuck up,,,,,,

At the end of March,,booked in for the paintwork,,,,

Bonnet,,,front bumper,,wing mirrors and a couple of small marks,,probably at least two wheels refurbed if not all of the them? i see at the time but two wheels for definite,,,,,,

and that should make her lovely,,,,,

Then i can get some new mats,,,,,jasonp

just picked car up this morning..

she flew through her mot with no advisorys,,,

new bulbs for some of the interior,,,new wipers front and back,, [ thanks to Chris G for the rec for the bosch retro wiper]

new fuel filter but fuel lines in very good nick so just cleaned up,,

new regulator for the heating speed controller [£60 from Porsche]

bearings in perfect condition so no replacements needed,,

£300 in total,,,,

happy days!,,,,,

i have decided to get the whole car painted instead of a few panels,,same situation as my last s2,,,

time to put a few miles on her now as only done just under 100 miles since i bought her but held off using her too much until the mot was due,,,,,jasonp

Nice one Jason, and it's the nicest feeling when they go through mot Cleanly!

Maybe put put a few pictures up of your car before and after spray, I know I'd love to see it.

i woukd love to get to that point, as I had just under half of mine sprayed once and that made it look amazing.

Enjoy

Atb

daniel

thanks Daniel,,,

she actually looks very good polisihed up and to a non petrol head would seem very nice apart from a obvious small mark on the front bumper but after a few days use in the rain its apparent that the previous owners had panels painted instead of doing the whole car and in some areas she looks "tired" ,,,rubbers need changing so i be ordering one for the roof from alistair/sulezrek in due course,,,,

just glad no nastys were found and all seems very good underneath,

still the point of the noise/whine coming on when i de-accelarate and which goes off when i touch the gas? that i thought was a front drivers bearing but only happened once so will have to see if it occurs again after a good run,,,,points to the new exhaust,,defective tyre or possible caliper i have been told but i need to get it to the workshop when the whine starts or its guess work i believe,,,

chances are it may have righted itself as nothing come up on the mot[:D],,,,,jasonp

Matching budgets tyres when I first took tenure and although good fun they have to go and i decided on uniroyal rainsports,,,£400 for the set,,,

had them on my other s2 and liked them a lot,,

Willl have them fitted on tues or wednesday plus a little rattle on the new dansk needs looking at,,,,jasonp

Dropped my s2 off this morning to have new boots fitted and a rattle/blow on exhaust sorted,,,,

Chaps showed me my new set of Rainsports 3 [ sharkskin],,,,,

explaining and showing me how the tyre is designed to deal with aqua-plaining etc....

little sharks on the outer rims a nice touch

pick her up in the morning,,,,,,jasonp

picked her up this morning,,,,

lovely new boots,,,,,

no problems with the exhaust re brackets or a blow,,,

had a good look underneath her this morning while she was up on the ramp,,

Nice and shiny new fuel filter,,,new brake line fitted just before i bought her so a bonus,,,,

Presently to make this car almost perfect is a wheel refurb and a repaint with a few panels needing to go back to the metal,,roof included plus as mentioned before all new rubbers and thats about it,,,,

A little whine may or may not point to a torque tube refurb in the future i have been told but for now i just need to put a few miles on her and then see what she chucks up,,,,,,jasonp

great news Jason...the sun's out today, hope you're out enjoying the car...atb

Pete

thanks pete,,,

popping on the north circ later and get her on the m25 after ,,,,,

i can feel shes is dying to go or is that me? ha,ha
