dont get me wrong i too look back at some of these mobile skips with fond memorys, but they really love hate relationships, i loved to hate most of them even when my dad or my mates dads owned them. But like a moth to a flame people just went back for more. I must be getting old, i remember my father had a Hillman Minx, bright red with black platsic seats, and at the time i love it, even when i lent agaisnt it and my arm disapperaed into the front wing oh happy days.

1. Mustang - not the new one but the current sheds you rent with a completely asthmatic engine, shocking plastics and awful build quality

The others have already been mentioned
2. Daewoo - any, but Nubira springs to mind (even GM have killed the name now)
3. Princess - I don't get motion sickness, and it is the only car that ever made me feel ill
4. Maestro

And finally
5. Triumph Spitfire. Someone might love this, but it's hardly state of the art, it's noisy, cramped, built from biscuit tins and even 30mph feels "exciting".

For styling I would go with the Ford Scorpio - what were they thinking.
Also, a bit controversially, I think the Bentley Continental GT (new coupe) looks bl**dy awful, and it's a real footballers car, which may come back to haunt them when the coolness wears off.

First car for me was a Datsun Stanza, hmmm. Not the last word in handling or acceleration, although the brakes were good. One of the cam bearing holders pulled the bolts out of the head, where it had been shoddily serviced (and clocked), the engine mounts were knackered (and v. expensive) and the driveshaft cv joint failed.
 
One of the Acid Tests (IMHO) is whether any car was a dog at conception, or developed into a dog due to poor build quality. I would defend the spitfire on these grounds in that it was popular with many when launched. The Princess however was a misconceived attempt by BL to have a more modern car in its range (I do wonder though if it had had better performance and better build whether we would look on it differently. It was a poor time for BL with no real money for real development and no real management/marketing flair in general. The TR7 falls into the same category)
 
yes true, but some cars are just unforgivable, both in design, finish and road handling real odd balls of well nature. Point in fact Suzuki's little X-90, what is it. I was looking at one today its not really a off roader,nor a sports car or well anything really its a genetic miss match. Has any body owned one and if so what is it good for. I know i'm rattling but i find some things really weird, like why did any body in the 80's order a dog poo brown car and to top it dog poo matching interior, and yet the streets where littered with BL brown cars....

Anyway im off for a lye down.

Have to take issue with your choices mate.

Alfasud - Yes they rusted, but great handling cars, with lovely rev hungry engines.
Mk2 Escorts - Lots of peoples 1st sideways experience & RS models that kicked but on the world rally circuit.
Renault Fuego - Not a good car, but hardly worst 5. Have you ever driven a Renault 14? Sunbeam Talbot - The Lotus Sunbeam was bloody fast in it's day. OK not very reliable, joke brakes & pants handling maybe, but fast.
Sierra - After the initial models the Sierra, was probably one of the best looking mass produced family cars of the period & at least they were RWD.

I've been lucky with cars, my first was a Fiat Uno which like a roller skate, never needed to brake for any corner as it was so light and nimble - went to Scotland in it when it had over 100,000 miles on the clock - it also couldn't stay at 70mph on the motorway on a slight gradient - but I didn't care as I loved it [:)]

Second car was a Peugeot 205 GRD which was in the family since new - could pull tree stumps out of the ground - it had so much low down power. It also had a interesting habit of delivering a unexpected surge of power while driving, kept me on my toes! Great car.

My next car - a 924! [:)]
 
I accept your points. My rationale was:
Alfasud, can't stand the look of them, they look like an Allegro to me
Mk2 Escort, not as good looking as the Mk1 and a gutless wonder in the 1300cc version that my Mum had
Fuego, a wannabe 924
Sunbeam Talbot, GM motors short cut to a hatchback. The one I had dropped its doors so they wouldn't close after a gust of wind distorted the pillar
Sierra, My first company car and made me car sick
