Youngest 944 driver

My son's just passed his test and is looking for a car. I've got a 1983 944 which I'm going to sell (never use it - prefer to drive my S2) and during a few minutes of madness, I wondered about the possibility of giving it to my son; trouble is, he's only 18 and I don't think he's got enough driving experience to handle a powerful rear wheel drive car properly. And then we checked out insurance - the cheapest quote was just £5000 - yes £5000! - for third party, fire and theft cover. All in all, one of my more stupid ideas but it got me thinking, are there any young 944 drivers out there?

There's a guy who was featured in Retro Cars who's Dad is into Porsches and he has a 924 as a first car. He didn't specify insurance costs exactly but suggested it was comparable to what his mates were paying for Corsas etc. I think his surname was Marsden, he might be on here?[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Can you get classic cover for the 944 at 18? It might need to be garaged and limited mileage but it could still work out.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Not tha I would condone such a thing, but....

Have you considered putting the policy in your name with your son as the named driver? No no-claims as such, so it will be quite expensive, but no-where near 5K!

Also means there's a fair amount of trust involved - if your not willing to risk it, why would the insurance company!!

I am 19 and drive a 1985 lux. For my insurance, I went to 'Screentrader'. Good deal and quick getting the cover note. At the moment I pay just over £1300 a year, about £120 a month, which isn't bad considering I used to pay £50 a month to drive a Volvo 440 1.8l. Hopefully I can get through this year unscathed, to get the price down, living in cornwall does help!?

I've had two 944's since I was 23, a Lux and now my S2. I'm 26 now, and still have a hard time getting insurance quotes, a lot of the classic companies won't give me the time of day untill I'm 30 (which seems to be getting closer every day[&:])

I was paying around the same as cornishgrose on my lux at the time, which was the same as I was paying on a 306 s16 so thought it was a good deal. I now pay under £400 on a classic policy through A Manning UK. They were brilliant, very helpful. It is an exclusive club members scheme, so maybe he should give them a try and join up if it's cheap enough. Insurance can be a nightmare though, so I doubt an 18 year old will get near a reasonable quote. Norwich Union quoted about £2000 to insure me this year, so he's not alone.

I'm 25 and my 1988 944 S (fastest Porsche that is not group 20, I think!), 5 months old (to me) is my first car. Insurance is about £900 with Norwich Union Direct, although this has caveats like 5,000 miles and an insane excess (>£1000), so next year I hope to find a suitable classic insurer, maybe one that gives a discount for PCGB membership.

I got my turbo at 24, insurance was around £1500 for 5k a year ltd mileage. I could not get any better until I hit 25. I then got covered with carole nash for around £400 for 3K a year @ 25.

I am (@26) with carole nash, ltd to 3K a year, costs me around £350. They give you non-competitive track day cover, break down cover and cover abroad too, which was handy for Le man!

You have to be 30 to get cover from alot of classic insurers, but there are some about who will cover younger drivers.

After reading everyone else's posts, I thought I'd do a bit more investigation but I still can't get a quote below £3700 so its a non starter for the time being. Another possible problem is that of unwanted attention from those nice gentlemen in white cars with blue flashing lights. When I was 21, I bought a Jaguar XJ12 and got stopped on a weekly basis because, to quote one cop " my face didn't fit the car".
By the way, a 924 was only £200 cheaper than a 944.

Until CornishGrose came along the youngest I'd heard of was 20, and that was Ben Sideways known to many on the Titanic list.

The question now is who is the oldest. It's not me because I am a spritely 39 [:)]

I feel a bit dodgy[].......just realised I have been talking to Kids on the Internet[:D][:D][:D]

I bought my 2.7 aged 23 and insured through Lancaster on what seems to be a very good policy for the price. I pay approx £1200 a year for a fully comp., unlimited mileage policy with class 1 business use. This policy also gives breakdown cover and glass cover which doesn't affect my no claims bonus - very handy earlier this year when my rear screen was cracked. The premium didn't seem to drop when I renewed at 24 but all the companies I spoke to recently say it should drop significantly when I turn 25. Does anyone think companies should put something in their advertising giving ages they will cover to save so many phone calls to companies who will not cover you ? All a bit frustrating !!!

What a relief. I was starting to think I might be the oldest. [:)]

Andrew Marsden does indeed have a 924, and rather a nice one too. He is a member of the 924 register as well, and was parked next to me at front runner 2005.

[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]While I don't disagree with the sentiment it isn't strictly legal and they will happily take your money until you ask for some back from them - at that point they check and if they find the principal driver is not the one they were told it is then they will invalidate the policy. You're then left with no insurance just when you were trying to claim which could be hot water if someone else was involved also. It's technically fraud too I guess.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]
