PCCM upgrade

Hi all, another simple question (I hope). If I get the 997 I'm looking at, it's fitted with the original PCM and I'm really keen to upgrade to something with Android Auto. I know the Porsche PCCM upgrade exists but all the docs suggest it's only available up to the 996. Is the 997 that different? Is there an alternative Porsche upgrade for early 997s? I know they're expensive (though I can get the one below cheaper than the design911 price), but I'd much rather go with a Porsche product than anything 3rd party, unless that's absolutely the only way to go.

Hi,

I've just got myself a 997.1 and it has the original PCCM in it.

To me, my options are;

  1. change for aftermarket set up with Bose adapter - currently looking at Sony
  2. Add Mr12Volt which gives USB and phone functions
  3. Wait for the new unit from Porsche as the 996 option doesn't fit in the 997
  4. Leave as is
I'm leaning to option 1. As much as I love the sound of my new toy, I like my music and as I intend to do some touring, something up to date has it's benefits
 
Hi WestonMatt, I'm leaning in the same direction as you. My main priority is Android Auto so the Mr 12V option isn't sufficient. The PCCM upgrade from Porsche, quite apart from not being available yet (and I'm a little impatient), also seems expensive for something that'll tie you to that unit. With the Bose adapter gives you the flexibility to fit any appropriate double-din head unit, upgrading/changing as you like, while still having the old PCM unit to put back in should a future buyer want it that way.

Have you made a short-list of head units? I've been looking through online reviews and forums but it seems every source quotes a different "best"! And the search isn't helped when models update so frequently so any review more than 3 months seems to quote models that have since been superseded.

I just fitted an Xtrons unit to my 997, the fitting process needed a little thought and fiddling but overall wasn't the hardest of jobs. I have to say I'm extremely impressed by the unit, the radio raceiver works well and the bluetooth connection for calls as well as streaming music also works smoothly. As an added bonus it has wireless Android Auto which works over the bluetooth connection which for me is a big and unexpected plus. Also with a WiFi connection you can download apps from the play store which means freedom to use whatever music player or launcher you want. The unit does benefit from a mobile wireless connection and you can't share data over bluetooth so getting a mobile wifi router is useful but other than that it all seems to work great and I'm really happy with it.

Also if you subscribe to their mailing list you can get 15% off and the system comes with a optical adapter for the Bose integration included. Ended up costing me £386.74 for everything delivered and a couple of hours of my time to install which I think is a pretty good deal.

Unfortunately the PCM upgrade is only for the 996 at present, although I am sure there will be something for the 997 at some point as it will also fit the 987 Boxster and Cayman, so there is probably a larger market than 996 / 986 Boxster.
Aftermarket units seem to be the most popular upgrade.
 
I've just ordered a Sony XAV-5650. Being delivered tomorrow. Will need to wait a few days for the fitting kit and then fit over next weekend

I haven't used this JoyAuto unit, but I have fitted the kit by NM Automotive which is based on the SmartAuto / Unichip setup. Works extremely well, support is excellent from Nick at NM and is completely reversible. Took a couple of hours to fit, you need to open up the PCM unit to fit a small board inside (same with all of these kits). Once installed you're left with a completely OEM-looking setup with the addition of CarPlay!

Sorry for not seeing this sooner, but for anyone wondering about Porsche's own upgrade. I was told by the head of Porsche Classic GB that they introduce a model into their Classic scheme once it's 10 years out of production, this year for the 997. I was asking specifically about the PCCM and he said that will be one of the first products introduced. I really hope that it happens and that it's good (took them two tries with the one for early 911's, as the first one was a bit rubbish, the second one far better, even by their own admission).
 
Morning All,

This is something I'm quite keen on myself, but like a few others I have Porsche warrenty still running for the next two years on my 2013 Cayman.
Has anyone fitte the Joyeauto or the NMAutomotive soulutions and had their car into Porsche and did Porsche know it was installed.
Have seen the Test Drive Scotland install on YouTube and it seems a lot of work to remove it for services, warranty work etc?

I am waiting for the Porsche upgrade for my 997.2. Mine isn’t by any means a daily driver so I’m happy to supplement the PCM with my phone a
and not risk having a system that may not work with my Sports Chrono etc.

there’s some info on the pccm plus unit for 9x7, from the manual,that’s posted there appears to be a level of integration with things like the individual memories and the trip computers. Have a look at this thread (yes its primarily a boxster forum and yes you need an account (it’s free) but the info linked there appears to be relevant to 997 and by the looks of the photos both generations.

Thanks for the information. I can do without another forum membership but that level of integration is exactly why it is worth waiting for the official upgrade. Looks hopeful. Unfortunately it will be a while before the 997.2 joins the Porsche Classic programme so I will have to be patient.

It seems a bit strange that nothing has been released for 997.2, especially as the model enjoys something of a 'one to have' reputation and is still often seen on the forecourt of OPCs. Maybe the acknowledgement of the model before, the one before the current one as something of a Modern Classic is too much of a pill for Stuttgart to swallow...
 
I guess the one saving "grace" is a properly fitted Porsche unit would add a bit to the resale. I actually really like the idea, just wish it was not so pricey. I also want one for my old '71T

I think it is to do with the engine and system architecture change from 997.1 "996" engine to the 997.2 DFI series engines. As I found out in time, you can't easily move key electronic components from one generation to another across a major systems change.

Having said that, of course Porsche's prioritisation of development resources is a choice.
 
I did wonder that once posted. DFI will have its own level of complexity over the older power train and I suppose the PCM will be much more of an integrated part of the system than purely a radio / sat-nav in older cars.
