2006 Cayman S Starting Issue.

Hi All
I have a Gen 1 Cayman S 2006 42,000 miles. Owned it for 8 years.

If I leave the car in the garage untouched for a couple of days when you turn the ignition key to start it it just goes click. Lights don't dim, no warning message is displayed.

Several attempts usually starts the car as normal. Once started all is well until the next time it is left for a day or so. Never does when i'm out.

I have ruled out the foot switch as no message to depress clutch is displayed.

Could it be a poor earth if so where? My local indie thinks it is starter motor solenoid. Once started the heat from the engine helps the solenoid they reckon but i'm not convinced.

Any other ideas would be appreciated

Hi Trevor,

Like your Indie I’m inclined to favour a starter issue as a starting point. Maybe just remaking/cleaning all the contacts will help?

If you’re getting a click then I reckon that would rule out a problem with the clutch switch.

A failing battery is another possibility. One of the motor factors will be able to check it for you, and it’s usually FOC.

I had 2 clutch switches fail on my Cayman S Gen 2 without giving messages to depress the clutch except for about 1 in 50 occasions. OPC said "can't be that Sir, no messages to depress clutch". Had to have a shout at them, especially on the second one. The third switch fitted had a different part number and didn't fail again.

Thanks both.

That's interesting about the switch, I don't understand why it would not send the message if the switch isn't making.

Spoke to my Indie today and he said to leave and see if it starts dong it when its hot.

If it does then it is almost certainly the starter solenoid.

As I have alternative vehicles I will go with this. If it suddenly fails totally when I am out I will call the rescue people.

Don't think its battery as its kept on a charger until just before starting.

Thanks Again.

Trevor
