2010 fun event

Not sure if you resolved this...I was following the thread earlier. We're going to U Drive at Heyford Park tomorrow, so I spoke to them thinking I might discuss it whilst my daughter abuses one of their cars. Unfortunately they don't do track day type events (noise is a problem) but recommended Motorsports Events who do Abingdon and several other similar venues. Limit at Abingdon is 98dB...there's an event there quite soon I believe.

Thanks Graham, that's really appreciated. I've been very busy at work for the last few weeks so haven't had the time to pursue some of the leads I've got, but I hope to put this right fairly soon and fingers crossed should be able to get an outline of a possible event in the next few weeks.

Peter...thought you'd appreciate some relevant feedback from our visit to Heyford Park on Saturday. Just fine for 16 yr old daughter to get a feel for driving without the worry of kerbs, lamp posts, other cars, or wrecking our scabby old Fiesta. Well controlled and organised too.

However, this is an old airfield with concrete runways so this comment would apply to any other similar venue: bizarre sight greeted us, Ferraris, Porsches, Aston Martins etc with large mudflaps!! They clearly have a stone chip problem, so you are right to be wary of this type of venue. Maybe tarmac's better?

I'd echo Paul's comment on another thread about this type of driving day (eg. closely watched in someone else's Ferrari)...nobody seemed to be free to really give it welly, so not much fun for us I think! Daughter's comment was that it provided excellent people watching (mostly posers)...you can always rely on a teenager for a frank and honest comment!!

Recalling the earlier discussion, we were at Prescott on Sunday for the Autumn Classic (of course we couldn't make Saturday for the Porsche Speed Championship), that's tarmac, and I was reminded what a beautiful place it is: a great day out, everything from Bugattis to Morgans and TVRs. We wondered why the Morgans were so much faster than the TVRs, though.....

Thanks Graham.

I still feel the problem with Prescott will be getting a good turnout, it's not a cheap venue, there's little room for error and it's not ideal for spectating at if you're also a participant.

Curborough is definately better for the sort of atmosphere I was hoping for, and assuming I'm not able to manage to arrange the ideal event I have in mind then this is currently looking like a great fall back plan.

You're right, Peter.

At Prescott there's plenty of run off at the hairpins, but just a tyre wall beside the Esses....the TVRs were trying very hard on Sunday, and we saw one (immaculate, sadly) Grantura panic brake at the first kink, and go straight into the tyres. Just heard the sound of breaking plastic! Similar thing had happened to someone on Saturday too, I believe.

We won't even discuss what happens at Semi Circle...the ground falls away on the outside of the bend, and just about everybody lifts off round there (I certainly did on my runs!). Never seen anyone go off there, mind...

Haven't been to Curborough yet...must rectify that next year. Is that where MAC run their Hill Climb School?

At c£170 the Prescott school is competitive with Ferrari drives and track days?

I have complete respect for someone who can go quickly at Prescott (and similar hill climbs) without a lot of practice, there are an awful lot of areas to catch out the cocky.

I seem to remember I was told to aim and stay in the middle of the semi circle, which certainly helps ensure you don't go for a ride down the hill!

I'm hoping something much cheaper than a trackday can be organised, it will be at the expense of track time (compared to a track day, but probably a lot more than at a hill climb event) but this isn't supposed to compete with either, it should be something very different and will hopefully encourage a much larger turn out than the 10 or so we often get at a trackday.

Keep me in the loop on this, please Peter. BTW I wasn't claiming to go quickly up Prescott, far from it!!

We'd just relaxed under the trees between the Esses and SemiCircle and noticed that a only few cars "straightened out" the Esses by using the kerbs, and the stripped out TR8 that got FTD in its class was one of the very few that didn't lift on Semi Circle. I doubt if I would ever be that brave, but intend to do the course next year.

Then I'll find out, perhaps. Must be more difficult than it looks to get a good time...

Thanks Graham, whilst I've not had the time to do too much I think i've found a firm who will take the hassle away and do the organisation for me. I'm waiting for confirmation of possible venues, costs and so on, I hope to know more in a week or so.

And North Weald is between John's house and mine which makes it by far the best 'track'   [:D

Well I'm open to bribery, Wild Turkey and V Power are both accepted [;)]

hello, I have been reading your posts with great interest. I am a member of Witney Motor club in oxfordshire, and can organise an autotest, or an Autosolo which will be much more suitable reading what has been said. An Autosolo is less damanding than an autotest, and is aimed at road going cars. having Witney Motorclub run the event would negate the need for insurance etc as it would be all covered by the entry fee which includes the MSA permit fee which covers Insurance etc. this can be run as well as a track / timing event..

Steve

Excellent, thanks Steve, that sounds really good.
I've got a stupidly manic couple of weeks ahead of me, so if it's ok I'll give you a shout once they're out of the way and I can think straight again.
