2013 Porsche club Championship

I think it is going to be exciting at Oulton Park this Saturday, the 7th Sept The circuit is challenging, the weather might be damp and points wise this event represents the start of the 2nd half of the season. Everything is up for grabs, so if any of the Class 1 or 2 challengers can start a good run from now on in - top spot can be theirs. ............ and I am not even racing! -- just glued to the pitwall.

Well what a day that was at Oulton ........ results here: http://www.tsl-timing.com/mgcc/2013/133653pcb.pdf The weather was actually dry and mostly sunny all day despite mid-week forecasts suggesting otherwise. Some stunning times set in quali on the Pirelli slicks from 8:30am. Sumpter emerging with a time just into the 1m 51's so taking pole, followed by 'Oulton Specialist' Carniel in his Boxster & then Bradshaw also in a Hartech Boxster - Morris bringing up the top four. Race 1. It took Bradshaw a couple of laps to re-assert his recent authority and he then went onto win comfortably by 5 seconds followed by Sumpter, Carniel, Slater, Morris & McAleer in very close order after battling race long. John McCullagh (968) maintained his dominance of Class 2, with Koeberle (968) coming home 2nd, Ings dropped to 4th when Toon snatched 3rd also in his 968. Whittle was the only DNF in race 1, he had rubbed a rim with someone at the first corner and his tyre valve was damaged giving him a puncture ....... I think they will be using the stubby size of tyre valve in future! Race 2. Two green flag laps were required due to some oil from the previous race. Bradshaw got off the line and emerged at the end of lap one as the clear leader, Carniel holding second place with a queue of folk behind eager to steal it from him. That is how it stayed for 11 of the 14 lap race distance but Carniel was then pushed off at Lodge by Slater to end his race - Slater ended up being excluded for that indiscretion. Meanwhile Sumpter lost his brake pedal, probably due to a faulty flare on a brake pipe and had to retire. Higgins was also an early retiree, believed to be due to a steering pump failure. So at the front Bradshaw won again, followed by Morris and McAleer who worked very hard to try and close the gap on Bradshaw. Duncan in a Class 1 968 had the most awkward of starts, he visited a lot of the grass at the first corner called 'Old Hall', skilfully avoided the barriers after being very close and joined the race in last place. John McCullagh won again as he challenged some of the Class 1 front runners, such was his pace. Koeberle stole 2nd place after a patient drive to catch and then overtake the fast starting Ings. Awards presented about 7 pm, then back on the M6 for everyone, homeward bound. Next races at the Britcar weekend at Silverstone on Sat/Sun 21st & 22nd September. Quali and 2 races on the Saturday, topped off by a third race on the Sunday morning before the Britcar 1000km race commences. See you there then .................

Race 1 finished two more to go. This race started dry but drizzle soon coated the track, everyone on slicks & a dry set up !! Bradshaw took another good win in Class 1, McCullagh did the same in Class 2. Can anyone upset this dominance in the remaining 2 races: Results here: http://www.tsl-timing.com/eerc/2013/133863pcb.pdf

Well I did the two races on the Saturday and what a great event, sadly my talent let me down against this group of mostly seasoned experts, last in quali, but did get P19 of 29 in the wet after my head start in invitation class but when it came to the dry race on track tyres against slicks it was the other way around and I could do no better than last. The important thing is I enjoyed it, looking at my vbox I can spot some obvious errors already and now think some coaching will be the next best way to spend some of my racing money. I need to find 10-12 seconds a lap to be not last of the 968s so what I don't know is what difference slicks against my Dunlop track tyres makes in the dry, 3 seconds maybe a lap, in which case it's slightly less of a challenge. Car and driver though live to fight another day. D

More like 5 to 6 seconds David round Silverstone because its such a long lap. Depends of course though on how fresh the slicks are, I went into the races there back in May on slicks that had already done 5 heat cycles including being overheated and went no faster in Friday testing then on 2 year old Michelins. By the second race they had gone off really badly to the point that I could see on the dash I was having to go 5+ mph slower at least in the corners, ISTR this was the 8th or 9th heat cycle I can't remember. Having said all that though there were guys I was racing with such as Paul Seagrave in a similar position racing on old slicks which means we were a pretty good comparison to each other as in similar position but unfortunately it can be pretty difficult working out a target to any one particular competitor in the pack.

One more race weekend and that's it for 2013! Whoosh!Did that go quick or what?? Will it be Tom as the new Champion or John M???? Snetterton is not far away now..... 968 could be the chariot of the champion for another year...???

Timetable for Snetterton on Sat Oct 5th, is here. Anyone coming? http://www.mgcc.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/SNET_Timetable_2013-V3.pdf

Results from the last 2 races of 2013 here: http://www.tsl-timing.com/mgcc/2013/134053pcb.pdf Suffice to say that Tom Bradshaw won Class 1 of the 2013 Porsche Club Championship by a clear margin in his Hartech Boxster, this despite a lengthy pitstop in Race 2. Sumpter had been elsewhere for the last races and Morris had an engine failure in his 996 in Race 1 so had to settle for 2nd in class for the season. John McCullagh continued his winning ways in Class 2 and as a result is the overall winner of The Porsche Club Championship as he beat Bradshaws total. His 968 was slightly damaged in Race 1 when oil on the track caused a few people to visit the green stuff. He recovered to save his P1, in Race 2 Jonathan Evans in his 968 recorded a maiden P1, with John McC home in second. The end of a fascinating season, been great to watch ........ what are we all going to do until it kicks off again next Easter?
