458 Driven

Having paid just over 1/3rd of that price for a 6 month old Turbo in Feb I'm feeling pretty good !! 480 horses, also very torquey, great steering, plenty of getaway umph and a proper gearbox !!!!! [:D]

Well Guys and Gals,

Just driven the new Ferrari 458 for the first time and impressions are favourable. [:)]

With 560 odd horses, it's fast, but also very torquey, more like a Porsche than the Ferrari I'm used to. [&:]

Stick it in 6th. and it'll go anywhere. 7th. is also a surprising useful gear, although its use will predominantly be on dual carriageways, motorways etc.

It's quite pointy, which I like. The steering ratio is high, just 2 turns lock to lock, partially accounting for this, but the suspension is also fully sorted and superb. Unlike the Scud, you can set it on soft or hard in any of the 5 available maps.

The 7 speed PDK-style gearbox is a delight - not far removed from its F1 dry clutch cousin - but smoother.

Dislikes? I'm still not sure about its rear end styling. and the electronic readouts are confusing and intricate; also with the steering wheel in my preferred position, I couldn't see any of the data anyway. The steering wheel itself does much more than act just as a rudder, since most of on-board controls are located there. This would take a bit of getting used to.

The getaway lacks the umpf of the Scud and the deeper exhaust note explodes in at 3,500 RPM and above. This may make it a bit of pain after 6 hours on the motorway! [&:]

The price is a bit eye watering at around ÂŁ200K including all the sensible options, but with a 2 year waiting list already who am I to complain? - just confirms what great value Porsches still are. [8|]

Regards,

Clive.

I am off to the Ring on another Ecurie25 trip in September and we are taking two of them along with a fleet of other great machines, so have so far resisted the temptation to book it earlier for the weekend for now but can't wait. Will give more feedback when I have tried it.
