6-speed box for 944 Turbo

In terms of standard gear set and final drive ratio the 968 box gives an even tighter stack of gears than the S2. 3rd is very close between an S2 and 968 but 2nd is longer and 4th 5th all shorter with 6th similar to the S2 5th, ISTR a touch longer but certainly nowhere near an overdrive as many seem to think. Its odd really as the 968 engine has a fantastic torque spread but the box would match a fairly peaky engine really well.

Mike, thanks, 29 and a bit mph per 1000.

A 951 with that ratio would be great.

Avoiding the 944 Auto Crown wheel which would spread all the ratio's - could a 968 6spd provide standard 951 ratio's 1st to 5th with 29.5mph/1000 in 6th?

George

Only if you had a jump like some of the old Economy 5th gears had in the '80 on Polos and Golfs!

Not really practical I think and I dont know of a suitable gearset, unless one of the Audi boxes has one.

Just looking the 944 Auto diff figures Lowtimer quoted I think this is for an early car- the S2 Auto I think has a 3.083:1.

My thinking of a weaker 6-speed box was when I heard of the Audi boxes being weakish - I have at present given up finding a decent 968 box that I can afford :-(

Sad but realistic :-(

Btw: 200 mph? I believe I would be a bit frightened at that speed on the autobahn & motorways......

Mike, a 951 Formel E [:)] - it was actually 3 +E on the Polo's.

I ask about the 200mph ratio not because I see huge opportunity for such speeds, but because my car could pull 90mph at 3000rpm with relative ease.

If you're going to race on big tracks or drive on Autobahns etc the 968 trans will get you pretty close to 200mph in the right car. [:)]

200mph with a 968 NA gearbox means 8000rpm...Pure folly!

Not quite Thom. 7200 will get you about 195mph. Of course this car would need quite a lot of power and downforce without drag...but that's do-able.
Besides, I only said 'close'. [:)]
Of course much of this talk about 200mph is academic, both here and in the US. I've decided to just try the stock gearing as I certainly don't need to go that fast on the track.
Better to get to 175mph quickly!!

Well, this is the sort of Friday afternoon I will be happy to split hair over gearing calculations :)

With 265/35 18" rear tyres my Excel chart returns 7500 rpm at 310kph (~193mph) with 968 NA gearing.
What rear tyres size do you use?

The Standard gearbox is fine in my book, the top speed achievable is more than enough and it feels tough as old boots, coming out of a tight hairpin maybe second feels a bit tall but i dont think its worth the faff of changing it..?Just need to drive it with the Throttle buried all the time[:D]

Mark how are you finding your 968 so far? I can imagine it is quite a change as even in my S2 I find myself doing a lot of cog swapping as it blitzes through 2nd, 3rd and 4th pretty quickly. I can imagine that in a race prepped 968 the torquey motor and tightly stacked gearing would make this even more frenetic. Personally I quite like the idea of a long 2nd and 3rd combined with a big ole dollop of torque like the 951 gives.

Actually Thom I agree. I make 190mph at 7200 on my chart w 26" tyres. I was looking at the wrong one. I can't seem to get them to upload. Must need to convert the pdfs into an xyz or something.
Where's a young person when you need them. [:D]

Which gearbox are you talking about Mark?

Patrick I was talking about the Standard 951 gearbox[:)]
Neil ,I like the 968, bonded very quickly with it,a real hoot to drive.

Mark,
I agree, the standard 951 'box always felt like something out of a bulldozer when I drove vw's or audi's, or even 915 spec 911's - it was high on my list of really nice characteristics of the 944T when i first drove one in 1989.

.....more of a hoot than the 944T? ....I always considered you to be pretty dedicated to the 951.

George
944t

George,I never said it was more of a hoot,it's just different!,it(the 968 race car) is a bit more extreme than my blue turbo as this 968 is a dedicated race car with light shell and better suspension,I had to swap to a 968 for this season as I wanted to try PCGB championship and they don't include 951s in the list of cars you can race.Won't ever forget 2010 but I have an idea that 2011 may be a little bit more hardcore and less glory encrusted [:D] but that's good.
I have been driving my red turbo all week this week pretty much, my heart is still in the 951 camp favourite porschewise.[:)]
