718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

Watch the car racing at the weekend ... place your order on the Monday? Except of course you can't - it's a GT car..! [;)]

Except you can. I've just had the call - GT4 incoming on a '20 plate [8D]

Good news Dave, but I thought you said you weren’t interested in a GT4? What made you change your mind?

Jeff

I wasn't interested enough to chase my OPC relentlessly, but I expressed interest in case a build slot with my name on became available. I didn't really want to get my hopes up as I though the chances of an allocation were slim, but it seems they weren't that slim given that I must be getting one of their first 5 or 6 cars. I was only ever interested in a manual gearbox which I suspect has bumped me up the list a bit.

I'm going to town on spec with the full approval of Mrs Twinfan, who is also a petrol head. You only live once, and in the current GT car climate you don't really turn the offer of a new one built to your spec down... [;)]

Sounds good Dave.

Getting a new GT car is still very much a lottery. I have a very good relationship with my sales chappy (10-years!) but haven't heard a peep from him despite occasional hints from me that I've been on 'the list' since announcement of the 981 GT4, so read into that what you will. Like you I'm not interested in having the PDK transmission, so maybe I should make that clearer to him. The 982 series still has a way to run so I have to remain optimistic.

Keep us posted, but mind you don't get too carried away with those options.!

Jeff

I was going fairly low spec but Mrs Twinfan has made it clear I need to go to town otherwise I'll end up with a car too similar to my existing GTS! I've been told this one needs to be special...

Dave,

That's great news on your GT4 slot. You being set on a manual gearbox must have helped your position on the list.

I'm looking forward to seeing your final spec and choice of colour.

Brian

Cheers Brian. As this may be the only time I'll ever get to spec a GT car for myself I'm going "big". It's only money and you only live once, right?

So you're anticipating a March/April delivery then Dave? That's a long lead-time.

Maybe I'm wrong but I get the impression that more Spyders are arriving here than GT4s at the moment? I'm guessing that the Spyders are assembled in Stuttgart whereas the Caymans (presumably the GT4 included) are now being produced in Osnabrück (I think?), which may have some bearing on this?

I believe that Nick Pike (NickUSA) has a GT4 arriving on these shores soon, so hopefully he'll be sharing his impressions of the new car with us here.

Jeff

I've got a Jan or Feb build date (not got the exact date yet), so March/April delivery is about right. I think it's 4-6 weeks from completion to collection? Once I have my build date I'll get the spec lock date which is a couple of months before that. I've not got long to get my spec finalised if I've got a January slot, although I think I'm done now. I've just sent it through to my Sales Associate.

Yes, I think 4-6 weeks from manufacture to delivery is about right Dave. Hope everything goes smoothly.

Like Brian I'll be interested to see your final spec if you're prepared to share it with us.

Jeff

Just tick all the boxes and you're pretty much there! :ROFLMAO:

I just need to decide on BOSE. My Sales Executive has suggested it, but as I don't really listen to music in my GTS I'm not sure I need it unless it makes a massive difference. In a GT car, I suspect it's a waste of £834?

Ha! Yes all the options are tempting Dave; you just need to be realistic. I can spec a very nice car for about £84k, and I'd be more than happy with that as it would be for me and not necessarily for resale value since I tend to hang on to my cars for quite a few years.

I wouldn't bother with BOSE myself since I suspect you'll find that the GT4 will be noisier than your GTS. Your SE's advice is no doubt based upon his own views on resale.

Ralph - thanks for confirmation that the GT4 is being built in Osnabrück.

Jeff

Yep - I'm speccing for me and not resale, but that means buckets/clubsport/PCCBs/LED headlights. That's £13,560 in options as a starter for ten.

Ouch.

CS and PCCBs?? But you're not a dedicated tracker are you Dave? My experience with the standard Bi-Xenon PDLS on my 987.2 is very positive and more than adequate if you want to save a few quid.

For what it's worth, my own base colour spec would include the buckets, leather (possibly with the decorative stitching), Bi-Xenon PDLS, climate control, cruise control, speed limit indicator, rear beepers, the folding and dimming mirror options and the smoking package (£38 - ridiculous!). All for the bargain(?) price of £84,088. If he's feeling generous, maybe I could get the salesman to throw in the leather steering column casing for £84k.!

Jeff

I'm afraid to say that PCCBs and LEDs are purely for my own cosmetic viewing pleasure rather than any perceived lighting or braking benefit. CS is going on just because I also like the cage and I'm having the buckets anyway. There's no rational explanation for my spec, it's all want rather than need. I had a lower spec car done at around £86k and I was told by Mrs Twinfan that it wasn't different enough to my current GTS and I should go to town instead.

Who am I to argue?

I am not sure of the practical benefit that the CS package brings. It is neither a roll cage nor a harness bar, the harnesses attach to the rear firewall. Hopefully the fire extinguisher would never be needed and does one get charged for installing the driver harness (I think it takes a couple of hours?).

If I were going for an "occasion" car I'd specify it though and I would go PCCB over iron disks but not for a car that would run on track.

I think the LED lights are brighter and autodip is useful. The Smokers package looks better but the power socket stands vertically which isn't great whereas the non-smoker arm rest version socket is horizontal and therefore less obvious in use. The rear parking sensors with/without camera are useful but I would miss the front sensors available on the 981/718 cooking models, particularly with the huge front spoiler lip (god know how much that will be to replace).

I hope they broaden the range of available colours, it's pretty dire at the moment.

If PDK was available I'd do something like this

I think that sums it up Ralph - mine is going to be an "occasion car".

Front sensors are OK, but to be honest I've not really used them on my GTS. Rear sensors and camera are a must for me though given where I park.

Fair dues on the spec Dave - since you're spec'ing it for yourself it has to be right for you and no-one else - and most importantly, Mrs T must be obeyed.!

I'd agree with Ralph's comments on the CS package and although I've been on track as a passenger in GT4 and really liked the security of the full harness, I don't think it's something I'd spec myself. The additional weight is a minor consideration, but it's a stiffly suspended car and I suspect the "scaffolding" will have a propensity to cause annoying rattles. Also, I'm not sure how much it restricts both rear and over-shoulder visibility for everyday driving?

Ralph - your spec very much mirrors my own preferences but I guess that - leaving aside your keen interest in tracking the car - the selection of the Chrono Package is with PDK in mind if it provides some enhancements? I spec'd the Sport Chrono Package for my (manual) 987.2 but have never bothered with the timing facility on track days (I've always been under the impression that lap timing isn't allowed officially?).

Some form of front and rear parking assistance is welcome for any vehicle these days. What's really needed is some form of all-round view - front, rear and sides. The GT4's rear sensors and camera are a step in the right direction but of limited value. Plus, I've heard that the rear camera soon becomes obscured badly when the rear of the car becomes covered in traffic film. The rear camera system on VW vehicles is shielded by the boot handle/badge until reverse gear is engaged - great idea.

Jeff

Maybe the splitter is not so expensive - it fits on the lugs as shown here.

The active one on the Turbo S is over £1.5k but I guess that includes moveable parts.
