718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

Jeff,

I think you'll find we've gone full circle from SUVs paying for sports cars to sports cars paying for SUVs & electrickery. According to Bloomberg 911 & GT margins are >40%.

Ralph,

Can't help but feel you're right on that count. I assume that Porsche are still the most profitable entity in VAG?

Jeff

Snowy,

See Chris W post on previous page 19. According to Chris, the Oulton Park RS day is on March 6th 2020. I'll also be there hopefully.

Interesting reading in the same Chris W post on page 19, that he has the same opinion as myself on the subject of PCCB and the benefits attained through the lower gyroscopic forces on the handling and steering wheel feel. I have experienced both iron brakes and PCCB, back to back, at high speeds on the track. The PCCB option offers more than just stopping power benefits. The light alloy hubs also look great and contribute significantly to reducing the unsprung weight at each corner.

Jeff

thanks, i did end up adding it. what really got me was the near £600 for black callipers on £5,5k of ceramic brakes. Perhaps I’m showing my age but you used to pay for coloured callipers and black was free. Only Porsche can charge for black and people like me will pay it

It's daft isn't it? A change in paint colour costs £600. Don't get me started on the interior stitching - it's around £800 to have red or yellow instead of silver!

What about the black callipers?

That's what I mean - £600 to change brake calliper colour or £800 to change stitching colour. You're not telling me either of those costs any more to make. I expect a slight price rise for the black PCCB callipers as they'll be a limited in use, but you're not telling me red stitching costs that much more when it's used on lots of cars!

Yes, it's ridiculous Dave. Surely it only takes a few pence for the supplier to change the bobbin colour for the stitching? As you say, a small increase in price for the black calipers might be expected, but £600? - they're having laugh.!

I know that any base Porsche can't be described as 'poverty spec' (although it's pretty close), but the omission of very basic things like cruise control and electric folding mirrors as well as auto dimming mirrors and auto wipers is just plain stinginess. I assume that the spec and options vary from country to country and that the UK importer has the final say?

Jeff

At least navigation and DAB is included in UK stock spec with the 718 unlike Germany and other European territories.

Amazing that any manufacturer wouldn't include DAB in the spec Ralph. FM - I thought that it's being phased out??

Anyway, on my occasional visit to the PH Boxster/Cayman forum to see what's happening (not much apart from the usual sniping at MrD), there's a discussion about the deposit required when placing an order. In it Dave (Twinfan) points out that it's £3K for the Boxster/Cayman and £10k for the 911 Turbo and GT models, which begs the question where the GT4 fits in. I'd argue that it should be £3k on the basis that it's a Cayman not a 911 and that as a mechanically identical but non-GT car, the Boxster Spyder deposit should be £3k. No doubt individual Porsche Centres will have a different view.!

Jeff

It's not clear, and open to interpretation. The 718 GT4 and 718 Spyder are GT department products but they're not 911s. You could argue either way.

As I've said on PH, my OPC asked for a £10k deposit. Others seem to differ, and I'm not sure why some ask for £5k - maybe it depends on the Sales Executive and how clued up they are on the ordering details.

It sounds as though they're all making up the rules as they go along Dave. Disappointingly inconsistent, but probably par for the course with the PCs, and there's nothing you can do about it if you want the car.

More concerning, did I read that some PCs are accepting deposits long before there's an order? I thought Porsche has stamped out that practice some time ago?

Jeff

Yep, some guy placed a £3k deposit and spec in September but has no lockdown date, build date or delivery date. Another placed a £5 initial deposit then £5k when the build slot was allocated to them. Not good and something I thought was long gone.

My OPC have played by the book - no money until a build slot was allocated to me, then full deposit paid/spec provided/order signed within a couple of hours.

Tell me about it, but silver doesn’t cost more for stitching. But I still paid extra for yellow.

I was asked for £10k as soon as they offered me an allocation

£800 does sound like an extortionate amount of money to pay just for someone to change a thread bobbin from silver to red or yellow..!

By the way Jose, I feel rather embarrassed if I've goaded you into opting for climate control, but it's useful just to set and forget the about the temperature, and the option does allow for the driver and passenger to set their own temperature (useful if you have a finicky passenger.!). It's certainly something I'd count as a bonus if I were buying second hand, but that's just a personal preference.

Jeff

On a brand new £80k+ car I would want climate and auto wipers, plus I'd always add the smokers pack to tidy up the centre console.

Absolutely David.

Having to pay for folding mirrors etc is just blatant profiteering. The smokers pack also a must. I have no problems with the vertical power socket. I use it to power my Nextbase dash cam, and plug-in the C-Tek charger.

Looking forward to seeing your final spec and colour.

Brian

Just having a big hole in the centre console looks very low rent to me Brian, and charging £38 for a cover is the height of stinginess (I seem to recall that it was originally FOC on the 981?). I think I'd be looking the sales rep in the eye and asking "Are you really going to charge me for that?".

+1 on climate control, auto wipers and folding mirrors. And what age are Porsche living in when they don't provide an automatically dipping rear-view mirror?

Rant over..!

Jeff
