718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

Yep, very muted sound and quite bassy as expected. The initial PH report says as much too.

First journo drive reports will be interesting, do we know when they're taking place?

Press launch on the 16th - talk about dragging things out.! Just about par for the course with this car though.

As for the the perceived sound? It sounds OK to me, and it is what it is for all the well-known reasons - everyone needs to get over it and move on. As I've pointed out before, for the tin-top in particular it's the interior noise which is important and the PH reporter's comment (with race helmet on) is: The engine doesn't sound quite as vocal as the old 3.8. Hardly damning, and you can be sure that it won't discourage punters clamouring for a place on the elusive list.

That picture on pistonheads is edited and it looks very close to PTS 'signal yellow'. The racing yellow is a lot milkier in person but still great. Has any Porsche GB customers actually secured a build slot yet?????? I know of people in Europe that have theirs ordered and already have estimated delivery dates of November 2019.

I think you're right Thomas. Maybe this is a bit closer to the actual colour?

Rumour is that actual UK allocations are thin on the ground. Porsche are moving Cayman assembly back to Osnabrück from Stuttgart this summer, so that's likely to introduce production uncertainty and delays, and Porsche could be favouring ROW LHD production in the early batches.

Jeff

Yea thats much more like the racing yellow in person!

Thanks for the scoop on the potential reason why GB allocations haven't gone out yet! How are you coming by this information? *am I only dreaming?* - If Brexit is to happen does this mean Porsche GB cars can lose the EU regulation OPF and really let that flat 6 howl!? also this would bring the weight back down!

Scoop - I don't think so Thomas! Just general forum chit-chat I'm afraid. Maybe PC allocations are just filtering through slowly while the factory are sorting out realistic production numbers. Whatever, it's all in the ether at the moment.

And yes, we're bound to adopt EU regulations. I think the US cars will be sans GPFs, so they're bound to be noisier and very slightly lighter (not that it will make the blindest bit of difference to overall performance given the average weight of a typical US citizen.!).

Jeff

I understand that USA market cars will have some form of mesh filled canister to replicate the power and noise characteristics of EU market cars. Why? I guess for reasons of "good citizenship" and obscure the effect of the GPF.

As to Yellow.. these are of the Supercar Paddock car first thing Thursday.

Somewhat light dependent as I guess most colours are.

Thanks for the pics Ralph. Any shots underneath to show if there's additional rear suspension adjustability (doubtful I would guess)?

As to the US cars having a "dummy" GPF; other than perhaps a slight cost/weight saving, why bother? Porsche should be a leading example to them in the clean exhaust stakes, and I'd be surprised if the Californians don't pick-up on this at some stage.

Jeff

Jeff,

The car was backed up close to the wall so no opportunity to look under the rear and I bottled getting on my back in the Porsche Pavilion.

The rear tunnel looked quite useful, just as the Clubsport pictures John Tecce sent over earlier this year - I spotted some small vertical strakes underneath but no balls. I suspect the suspension adjustability is the same as the 981 version, which Chris Franklin says (re the rear which determines the overall camber levels) is around 1:40 negative before toe becomes the issue. Still easily fixed with RSS or Cup toe links without risking too much on the warranty front, however I am not familiar with how flexible it is for corner weighting and rake.

The hill run car had the Porsche badge at the rear with the Black Paint option, which I thought was a little amusing as you can't easily see "Porsche"

GPF, in the land of the free there are a lot more modifiers and Sharkworks et al will see a business opportunity.

Brian will be pleased to note that the Cayman only has a GT4 badge whereas the Spyder’s labelled 718 Spyder.

Jeff

Despite having a long time to sort things out, I can't believe what a dog's dinner Porsche have made of the plastic moulding around the exhaust pipes.

It looks as though the CAD engineer either had a bad day or was unable to access radii on his system.! Why not a use a semi-circular rather than a rectangular cut-out (as on the 718-6) which would would have made a better job of hiding the silencer?

I think Porsche have made a big mistake badging the the spyder a "718 Spyder". Why didn't they just badge it "Spyder" as they have with the "GT4".

The 718 moniker is historically associated with 4 cylinder Porsches, so labelling the Spyder as a 718 is contrary to Porsche's own heritage narrative publicised at the 718 model launch in 2016.

For me correct designation for both these new models is the type 982 and I shall refer to them as such.

Brian
