Oh! I'll be keeping a sharp lookout!

Be good to catch the testers for a chat at a Highland coffee stop..........

Brian

I did encounter a pair of 718 Spyders just outside Pitlochry on Friday, the GT4 was at Knockhill apparently, over from Germany. Couple of pics from one of them going past and then stopped in a layby for a wee chat.

Well done AndrewP for snapping the GT4 and Spyder on the road and at Knockhill circuit. A perfect circuit to test the handling dynamics.

Wish I had been there.

Interior, more stitching than 981!

Hmm...can't off-hand recall the extent on the 981 Ralph but "The Deviator's" certainly looks to have gone OTT this time..!

Jeff

Brilliant Ralph!

I hope this video encourages a few more members from south of the border to try the challenging dips, crests, and technical corners of the Knockhill circuit.

Good to see the GT4 driver using the kerbs properly. The car looks and sounds great.

Thanks for posting this.

An ideal technical circuit to showcase the new car - which looks great and sounds good to me! What's not to like (apart from the rather hefty price tag maybe!)?

I had a look at the video interview between Henry Catchpole and AP which threw up a few interesting snippets and is worth a watch. Like-for-like the new car is only about 30kg heavier than the 981 (heavier engine, GPF and additional aero parts), and there's confirmation that PDK is in the pipeline, as are other developments using the n/a 9A2 Evo engine.

AP reckons the buckets seats are really the only "must-have" item, with no mention of deviated stitching..!

I took from that video that it weighs the same within a few grams on paper if you spec it as light as you can as per the old homologation rules.

Last time round it seems that they were able to post the weight with lightweight bucket seats, PCCB, no radio or aircon and with the 54-litre fuel tank. For the 718 I suppose that it's now the heaviest spec and I would expect it to be heavier than the 981 owing to the new engine, GPF (12kg?) and the additional aero kit which includes the substantial diffuser moulding.

Note that the PDK transmission will add another 30kg, but we'll have to wait and see if Porsche use the latest PDK2 transmission which I believe is heavier than the series 1 unit.

Given it will give 7 or 8 reverse gears (being the wrong way round) I somehow doubt that

Ah! Yes that could be could be a slight problem Ralph, although Porsche are using it on the Panamera, so clearly ZF are able to provide variants. And if the next mid-engined Porsche is to be hybrid then it will become the unit of choice.

Jeff,

Are you sure it is the same ZF box? I thought the sports cars used one version and Panamera, Macan etc use one with a different internal arrangement.

Ralph,

The Panamera and Macan are all wheel drive whereas the 992 uses a transaxle so yes, the casings will be very different but I’m sure that basic clutch pack and constant mesh gear arrangement (but not the ratios of course) will be very similar for the PDK2 transmission used in the Panamera and 992 which incorporates space for a motor.

Whether or not we’ll see the latest PDK transmission in the 718 seems doubtful I have to say, with its introduction held off until the next generation - if it ever arrives..!

Jeff

There are now quite a few online reviews. Here's one from Top Gear for starters:

https://www.topgear.com/c...4-2dr-auto/first-drive

Somewhat half-hearted praise from the TG hack there! Trotting out the standard complaint about gearing and now the - incorrectly stated? - increased weight (closer to thirty-odd kg according to AP - and he should know).

And the video clips on the Highland roads sound OK to me.

People will moan and groan about the new car, but at least we can celebrate the fact that the GT Group have - against the odds - produced a car with new n/a flat-6 engine when it would have been much simpler to go with a tuned flat-4 turbo.

Jeff
