924 GT Look-a-like.

Do my eyes decieve me or does this car not have a flush fitted windscreen? Genuine CGTs have a flush screen.

Thanks for that CarreraRSR.
I've been building engines professionally for a long time, and I've never seen a piston like that. Looking at the picture of the pistons on their side, I thought it was a set of old Jag XK pistons. What a length, and they must weigh quite a bit as well. With the gudgeon pin that far down there must be a tendency to tilt which may help to explain the ring land damage. I'd like to find something better than that, particularly if they are cast rather than forged.
An engine where the head is flat and does not have a combustion chamber, tends to have a bowl type piston. Ford crossflow or V12 Jag are examples, but not with a bowl as deep as the 924T. Is the 924T cylinder head flat or does it have a combestion chamber?
Venolia, Ross or Wiseco in the US should be able to do a custom job for reasonable money, and retain a small bowl. Flat tops? I don't see why not, it is quite common for crossflows to use them, and I once built a XJS 6 litre racer with some flat tops from Ross. That gave 550bhp to good effect, and I can't see turbocharging would make a difference. I suppose if you have a bowl in the piston it is a combustion chamber, ok for the last bit of power in a racer, but in a road car?

I posted this about eight posts back

"Non turbo piston has lower deck height, as it doesn't run in the last 8-9 mm of the top of the bore. Turbo piston comes right up, as part of the combustion chamber is in the head."

The bowl is to increase the size of the combustion chamber, because with just the chamber in the head the compression ration is too high.

With regards to tilt, I can't speak of particularly high mileage engines but when I bent the valve at 67,000 miles, there was no visible sign of a lip at the top of the bores.

lali,
That looks a really nice look-a-like, just what I'm looking to do, would you like to tell us something about it please?

I didn't realise Ferrari did a diesel until I saw your picture!

We bought the car a few years back and it was a tatty looking 924s that had undergone some mods for sprinting... we dont do sprinting but we bought it cos it had some potential.... it didnt stop very well and it had some issues in negotiating corners properly!! the end result was thta it needed to be widetracked and at the same time the CGT kist was offerwed to us and teh rest is as they say history,,,

the engine bay wasnt spared the upgrades either... There's no forced induction of any kind but it's got 250+bhp... and its got the wrong number of gears too!!!

There really isnt much to tell....

Its a sad story of the torrid affair between one of the original 4 pot frontrunners and the last one.... I'm sure they were only having fun but as with most tales like this the casualty is always the children. And there was a child, and she was found not belongng to either parent fully enough to be accepted and was as unoved as a ginger step child.
Used and abused on the sprint and hill climb circiuts of the Uk, never gievn anything more than rags to wear... a real cinderella...

Then along came two unlikley looking princes that saw the inner beuty, and with the help of the fairy godmother.. oops godfather Kevin.. she was taken from the drab life she led in the cold north and now lives in the plush surroundings of the saaarf... with a new dress courtesy of coordsport and some shiney new gaz adjustables, a lovely pair of full head wrap Cobra seats, and some shoes to finish of the party effect.. oh what a pair of shoes... a set of original magnesium Fuches.

Does she go? The Widowmaker movs like a balastic missile... I mean SCAREY fast.

A lady on the street and a freak on the track!!

Out of interest, what crossmember is on yours Lali? Damn, don't remind me of what I have the basis for - it's got to go - too many projects!

Tref.

I think the way to go is:-

924S in red or silver, in the best condition I can find. ( 5 stud wheels means one problem solved).

924 Turbo or 944 Turbo gear box. Will a 944 Turbo gearbox fit a 924S?

Black trim as close as I can get to the original.

Body kit, who makes the best one?

Engine. I havn't made my mind up on this, How much do 924S and 924 Turbo engines weigh?

Anyone got a 924S, Manual or auto, in silver or red for sale?

if a 968 box fits a 44 turbo should be ok?

My kit was supplied through EMC in bham.

The car is currently in Reading and if you want to have a look at it and you're nearby then that shouldnt be a problem... ours is a track car so the interior is stripped out

Thanks for that lali. What was the quality of the EMC kit like? I live in Southampton so it wouldn't be a problem to come up, I'm of to France this weekend so I'll contact you about coming up next week sometime.

The quality is top notch.. not that I've seen any other kist to compare it with though.....

It comes from someone else in Bham.. cant remeber who they are though. It's good and sturdy not like the flimsy crap that was on the car when we bought it.
