931 vented badge panel/nose on a 951..!

It'll certainly improve Lindsey Racings cash flow if not the cars air flow [:D]

Cheers
Mick

I have got one of the vented panels sold by Deutsch9 sat in my garage and am in all honestly totally unclear whether fitting it would have a detrimental effect to performance or not at least in road driving conditions as opposed to the track.

Can I throw something into the equation ?

Lindsey Racing doing a modified badge panel http://www.lindseyracing.com/LR/Parts/944S5HEADER.html now I know this is for their Stage V intercooler set up but surely they wouldnt provide this if it didn't significantly improve the airflow ?

If you look at the picture and the items in detail, this IC is placed under the panel in an upright position with the core of the IC facing direction of the incoming air. The badge panel has a bulge to accommodate the larger and more upright IC. The front face is therefore exposed directly to on coming air and I guess would be more efficient than stock, especially with the greater aluminium mass over the stock IC, if not via airflow

The stock 951 IC is fitted lower down and facing downwards. The 951 front bumper is fitted with a hole lower than the IC and is circa half the size of the front face of the stock IC. Porsche fitted a duct to allow incoming air to slow down and angled up prior to hitting the front face of the IC and therefore making the air flow more efficiently through the IC.

The above and more was learned from JM himself, plus elsewhere, over several forum threads and via emails with him as I fitted a 951 front IC under the vented badge panel. Therefore I have tried to absorb as much as I can to ensure an efficient IC fitment to my 924 turbo. I get the theory I have learned that a 951 IC vented by 924 turbo without any other kind of ducting to direct the incoming is inefficient. The ducts in the 924 turbo panel suck air into the engine bay in conjunction with he NACA duct. The air is sucked by air leaving the rear of the engine bay as the car is driven

If anyone is interested I may be able to locate one or two of these threads about my car and with JM's input. There was also one thread here with Mashers blue track car which had huge issues with over hot intake temps due to the 924 turbo vents. EMC removed the vented panel, installed the 951 front bumper with duct from bumper to IC. The hot intake temps were gone. Not sure thats hearsay, Its fact, Porsche I guess may have known what they were doing?

*Personally I think the vents look good whether on a 924 or 944. However Porsche have always stated 'function over form'. Therefore they do need to work if they are being used!!

Occasionally I err on the side of being a pedant and I am about to be one. The vented badge panel on my car was not the problem per se but the lack of significant air flow through the IC certainly was - this was cured by the fitting of the turbo front bumper (FG after market one to fit with early wings). The vented badge panel and bonnet scoop were removed at the same time. Job done. IC working again.

Sorry for the pedantic moment.

Personally I like the look go the vented badge panel and thought it kind of made sense of (balanced out?) the non-pop-up lights on my car (I use the term 'light' in it's loosest sense since it is like having two candles strapped to the front of the car [:D]). So, with the badge panel coming off at Augment Autos for an improved IC I have asked for the vented badge panel to be put back on.

Let's see if it a decision of folly or not. I'll just be glad to get the thing back on a track after 1 year of issues and general messing about. Promises to be nice when sorted though [:)]

Cheers
Mick

I seem to remember somewhere in a thread john mentioning that air through the 924 vents stalls because the air coming through the original ducts was flowing at a quicker rate. I also seem to remember something being mentioned that the 944 intercooler is not exactly free flowing through its core which is why I was planning on only directing the air through the vented panel only and fitting an aftermarket fmic.

We already discussed this not too long ago and what I can say with experience is that the vents will work only if air has room to escape behind the IC, eg if the fans are running.

Am I missing something here?

In the very first post on this thread the OP stated that the early badge panel doesn't fit. As we all know.

He also said that a later panel can be cut to fit the vents, but the extra bodywork behind makes it purely cosmetic, as the vents are blanked-off?

Why are we suggesting that it could affect airflow?

Just asking, as I don't understand some of the comments. I don't like the look myself, as I've said often enough, but can't see how it affects anything other than ruining the front of a later 944!

You are correct. In my case the extra metal work behind the panel has been removed as the vents have been hand made rather than 931 vents being stitched in.

the OP had a picture from a guy who did this in the states, I found his thread when starting mine and its worth noting that he experienced slightly cooler intake temps with the vents fitted.

This is all getting rather anal now. We are not racing cars or trying to shave milliseconds off the journey to the shops on the rare occasion we get to use our 944's. Its a cosmetic upgrade (or downgrade if you like). I really could not give a row of sheep faeces if the engine runs a few degrees hotter or cooler. As long as it does not overheat or do any damage in the 300 odd miles a year i'll do in the car, I care very little for all this tech discussion.

I made this thread to showcase a little covered cosmetic project I was undertaking for those that may be interested in the doing the same, not to discuss physics, fashion or Captain Fast's lap times with a similar Lyndsey Racing item fitted. Anoraks have got it covering 4 pages now.

I've got a nice couple of jackets guys, we don't need you input.

And the forum doesn't need people like you. Report post doesn't work, but hopefully the 'block tool user' feature will.

I disagree. I'm a user that makes educative, informative and relevant posts in interesting topics, whereby yourself wades in without reading the background information, jumps to conclusions and post dumps with no useful information that only winds poeple up.

EDIT:.. And you still didn't justify your remark or answer the querie I put to you...I suspect because you know you were wrong (and arrogant)

This airflow interruption discussion had been proved nothing more than hear say.

Rubbish! Jon Mitchell has forgotten more than you know about 944s and he is considerably less arrogant.

Please your good self (or Jon) explain to me in great detail, exactly how 931 vents fitted in my 951 panel pictured below (albeit with some crudely applied filler seal in blue I did in paintshop on the pc as an example of
the finished article,) is going to have any impact WHATSOEVER in the turbulence or otherwise hindrance of the performance of my car????????

Aside the minimal effect of aerodynamics in tiny fractions beyond giving a damn about outside of Formula 1 Racing, I think you will struggle.

QUOTE ME- This airflow interruption discussion had been proved nothing more than hear say. You can see from this pic below, the 951 panel beside a 931 panel. Note the extra structure on the 951 panel that will block/seal off the vents added from the 931 panel.
The vents will serve no function other than looks

Aftermarket intercooler with a fan might be a thought then.

Now I know everybody is entitled to their own opinion but in both this thread and other threads historically, on this subject there are a lot of people who poo poo this idea/modification without ever tackling it themselves. Shark is building his purely for ascetic reasons whereas I after reading numerous threads in the past on the subject and would like to incorporate this design whilst making it actually work.

What's basically been discussed in the past is that it does not work with the standard intercooler set up. My plan however (after some chats with John) is to redirect the airflow accordingly, fit an alternative more free flowing intercooler and alter its mounting position so it faces the vents head rather than pointing downwards in the direction of the original air inlet.

Whether I succeed first time out who knows but I am sure both Shark and myself when all is said and done will be happy with our new modifications.

It would be a boring world if we were all the same guys! (and girls)

I'll admit I missed the bit where it was purely cosmetic and the metalwork was staying in place.

I have a vented badge panel in the garage - my research showed it wasn't any use for the intercooler but would reduce under bonnet temps ONLY IF combined with bonnet vents to allow the air back out.

As for the arguing - go for a drive, that'll cheer you up :)

Well mine is a non standard IC, mine is a full height and isn't as restrictive as the original with air passing through iit. It sits from the bottom of the bumber straight up to top of badge panel. I do not have the turbo number but there is enough ducts/ slots at the bottom to cool the bottom of IC so the idea is the top vents will cool the top portion of the IC. But at the end of the day it is for looks and not for racing [:D]

Is this necessary?[:(]

I'm with shark. I think it looks good for the road, mine doesn't go anywhere near a track and I haven't noticed any problems with road use.
And it's not even 924 look-alike[:)]

Its not necessary, it is unfortunate....[8|]

this is an interesting post with very different views on form, function, appearance and other means to make the mod effective - engine bay vents.

That image of your white car is really nice (it was a nice car anyway and I like white) but the vents work aesthetically for me too.

More images required gents [:)]

All I could post is a 924T badge panel [;)]

That does look great!

My vents are taking a while, over a month body shop has had the panels and not even started cutting yet, a busy place. I'm in no rush though, partly my own fault for all the work we and many others give them, vented panels are back of the queue. Expect some pics when it's done!
