944 S2 belts question

£300 for a full belt job sounds very reasonable.

Northway Porsche is in Northampton (I think), which can't be far from Coventry, and they ALWAYS get good recommendations.

Rise to what? I love the Nippa - the Porsche will be a second car to either that or a Kia Picanto.

< thinks: they don't know you on here - you'll get banned before too long..[:-]>

Ahem... Good joke, Paul. [:D]

Sorry Oli, I was only using the comparison to a Perodua Nippa to make a point with a comic twist. Please realise that any offense was completely intentional...[;)]

Actually it was a bad analogy as the Nippa is actually a very good car....probably a good alternative if you can't find a good 944. [8|]

will he rise to it, wil he rise to it.....[:D]
Hello Paul McNulty, this is Oli's Wife. I'd like you to know that your awful comments about awful cars have just killed my husband. You should have known that he had a weak heart.

Please send lillies to the funeral. In lhis last moments, Oli quite firmly specified that he wanted a black car to be the hearse, so if they could co-ordinate with that as well, that would be good. Perhaps you have a tasteful black car you could loan for the event?

I've got a hire van - he might as well go out in the style he's used to...[8|]

It's not as big as my usual van, so I might need to fold him in two.

For anyone new to the forum, Oli and I share the same rather poor sense of humour....[:D][:D][:D]

Northway is down in Reading.

Autobahn in Coventry are affiliated with PCT who do all the oily work and I have not heard anything unduly bad about them. I used them myself when they had their own inhouse service department at the old Autobahn premises and couldn't find fault

Shireys in Meriden are another local Porsche specialist with a good reputation

PCT reckon that it's £88+vat (presumably 1 hour labour) to inspect the chain and £500 to replace it []

Presumably all the rollers, pulleys and belts need to come off to be able to get the chain of the spockets? Anybody know? Can just the nylon tensioner be replaced without having to strip everything down?

I think that the timing belt has to come off to remove the cams to allow the removal of the old chain and the fitting of the new one. However, the pulleys and tensioner won't have to come off (although obviously it will need to be re-tensioned when it is put back on.)

The tensioner is a small thing with a nylon slipper at the top and bottom, and it sits in the middle of the chain run pushing on both sides. I am told that the top slipper comes off easily and is replaced cheaply (although don't know whether you need to remove the chain to do this), but the bottom slipper can't be bought on it's own therefore you need to buy a whole new tensioner. Obviously, the bottom slipper wears just as fast as the top one ... (Note - I cannot vouch for any of this, I have just read it somewhere.)

Hi Xenon,

I'm guessing PCT quoted you £300 to replace just the belts, considering their hourly rate [:-]. You might want to check how much they want for belts and tensioners... They seem to specialise mainly in 911's and boxsters, considering what was in the workshop the two times I visited them.

Hi Dave

PCT do indeed have a lot of flat-sixes in there, mainly due to quantities about I suppose. I've spoken with a chap there who assures me that they are fully equipped to do any work and servicing on a 944.
