944 Turbo S Engine Rebuild Thread

I was going to drive up to Scotland with another car to visit a friend but it seems this may happen with the 944T instead. It seems I may drive through where you live so if you feel like meeting up to kick tyres let me know.
 
Had a great phone call and video from my mechanic today that the car is all back together and "dry as a bone” so looking forward to picking it up on Monday!

Parts bill will be negligible - the labour bil . . . .

Sounds good to me - I’m only 2 mins off a junction of the A1. Just PM me with a date and I’ll try my best to catch up.
 
You'll likely be close to me at some point as well, quite near Glasgow Airport, which you will pass if heading up the West coast which is definitely advisable!
 
Well, taking apart yesterday the car I was supposed to drive up there with in the first place has revealed worn out items that will require an expensive rebuild, so unfortunately the budget for going to Scotland will have to be used for this instead [:(]
 
26 billable hours of labour later . . . back home and continent again (for now, it is a 944 after all)!

Nope - but they changed out most of the seals on the way to diagnosing it. Unfortunately they were most of the seals I’d changed out on the way to diagnosing it too. And I’d changed them having only put them in less than 500 miles ago in the first place when putting the engine together.

I ended up happy with the car and happy with the final bill given the involvement, the guy working on my car nearly had a full-on breakdown at several points I gather:p
 
This is why I can't get motivated to swap to the 3.0 now, unless I have to pull the 2.5 out for some reason. Nearly everything on a turbo seems to be a PITA to do. I read years ago that some Porsche indys didn't like working on them, and used to quote high for work.
 
Nah, it’ll be reet!

This was one of those things that would’ve been just as much hassle on an N/A and was due to the machine shop nicking the bore when removing/refitting the freeze plug as part of the sleeving process.
 
As far as I know, my car is still on it's original clutch, touch wood it stays that way. But some say it doesn't take much longer to pull out the engine...I wonder if it's possible to run a 968 head without the variocam [:D].
 
Had a bit of a strange one that I’ve not come across before - noticed the clutch fluid reservoir was halfway between max and min so did some investigating.


The plastic hose nipple going into the top of the master cylinder was loose and leaking when wiggled. Didn’t take much to pull it out and see that it’s not coped with 30+ years of being next to a hot exhaust too well. Luckily - rather than buy a whole new cylinder I was able to get the part ordered from Newcastle OPC.

Ordered on Monday, sent from Germany for me to pick it up on Friday for about a fiver. Given the people, processes and logistics involved i Can’t believe they didn’t lose money on the sale.


10 minute job to fit everything back together and refill with fresh fluid, didn’t need to bleed it as it’s the top of the system. Took the car out on BH Monday and all is good [:)]

(Also ordered a custom built new turbo from the states, shhh)
