944 Turbo S questions

Peter - I have a slight handicap in that I need to get my car "posted" to me before I can start.

Lol, well yes I knew I head a head start there, oh and my car is definately stripped out at the moment and staying that way (at least till the noise drives me mad).

I'm sort of thinking of it though

That's the best news in ages (even if you do insist on putting the wrong number of cylinders back into it).

If I'm honest I'd rather sell it, but I just don't see how I'd get anything like what I want for it (never mind what it's worth) and I don't like the idea of it spending the upcoming winter in a barn. Basically it's a liability currently and I guess I'd rather it was in the garage outside at the very least.

Conversely I don't really want to sell the Mini because on a good day and on the right road it's outrageous fun, but then I hardly ever use it and the closest "right road" I have is the aforementioned one where the stoppers were definitely losing bite just over the summit, which severely limited the fun on the downhill section. Slightly ironically if I were to address the Mini's braking issue the next step would be a set of Big Reds as that is a semi-popular conversion. I have no appetite for going down that route however. Of course I might not be able to sell the Mini for what it's worth either.

I think I've been able to save the sunroof from the 924, I'll have a look at it when I visit my car next as I'm really interested to know how it differs.

Sorry to interrupt guys :)

Going for a final wee look tomorrow, how do I get a good look at the sills/inside the sills? My main concern is the bodywork...especially with a
scottish winter just aound the corner.

Any other things to check?

Cheers

Open the door and remove the black plastic vent in the pillar. Take a good torch with you and you'll be able to see into the back end of the cill and any rust will be obvious.

On the exterior of the cill look for any bubbling under the paint. If there is any, that is a bad sign of rust coming from inside the cill and working its way out.

Also look carefully at the bottom of the front wings, behind each wheel. Mud etc often collects behind the wheel arch liner and the bottom of the wings then rust through. If you buy a car, it would be worth removing the liners and cleaning out and waxoiling behind the wings.

would you want to keep the private plate or would you be prepared to sell it ??

Leave the Porsche goggles at home.

....and if you have a small digicam (or phone with a flash) put your hand inside the grille and take a picture inside the sill towards the front of the car []

If they will let you, peel back the carpet on the inner sills, just in front of the seats. you'll find 2 rubber grommets there that you can pop out & see the front part of the sills.

Anything else you should look for? Yes - another car to view.

I don't mean not to look at this one, nor even don't buy it (though I'll be honest - I can't see how it can be worth buying not having been snapped up already given the amount the 944 community has been talking about it). I absolutely mean look at some more, even some that are outside your budget. Get a feel for what a good and a ropey one look like and then you'll have more idea what this is like. I don't want to be a wet blanket, but I also don't want you on here in a month with urgent problems you don't really have the money to put right.

I have looked into selling the private plate, yeah. Seems to be worth a few bob and it's money I'd rather spend fixing the car mechanically. Unfortunately though it's not going to happen instantly.

Deposit down,

Went for a second inspection and I'm happy with it, confident its a solid car. I'm sure I'll regale you all with my experiences when I pick it up at the weekend!

Thanks for the advice

I genuinely wish you all the best with it. We'll try to help you out with the little niggles you're bound to have and in the worst case with anything more major also.
