944 Turbo S Saved

My friend bought the car that was being slowly broken up by Alisdair (Kulerzak) in Scotland earlier this year. Since getting it the car has had 2 new genuine Porsche Sills fitted with the continuation panel into the rear arches also handmade. There were a couple of small repairs to the A pillars and a small repair to the n/s rear arch where it has rubbed up against something in storage.

All it needs now is the excellent s/hand passenger side wing that we got from Steve Simkin fitted and the painful experience of buying a genuine Porsche drivers side wing to also be fitted. The rest of the car was surprisingly solid considering it had sat outside being neglected for a period of time.

Luckily Steve who owns the car is an excellent spray painter by trade so I am expecting the car to look excellent once completed.

I will give more updates as things progress, but here are a few shots taken today in the workshop.

Martin, having bought 2 new wings recently I can agree that it is a painful experience. I have since acquired 2 more wings and the drivers side is rust free. There are some marks and and tiny dings but nothing that wouldn't be sorted during the preparation for painting. Let me know if you are interested.

What condition is the dash in? Just thinking about a retrim whilst it's out.

It's in excellent condition. The original Burgundy one has already been removed and a black one is going in the car.

Great stuff Martin - this is hopefully the route I will be going down with my Turbo.

Mine has had the sills replaced, but with me looking to have the whole car painted, it seems a good time to be sure they are OK and replace with OE panels, rather than the pattern sills that are fitted now.

I also need a passenger wing, but the drivers wing looks as if it has been repaired before and is tidy.

Look forward to seeing more pics as the project continues :)

Andrew, I have a passenger wing available. It has one tiny rust hole on the bottom next to the plastic trim bracket and a small dint on the arch. Both easily repaired before painting. Let me know if you're interested. I doubt you would find better second hand.

Wonderful Title for a new thread...[:)]

Good effort, a new era is dawning - where the Original Cup cars are really appreciated

Great story. Martin, it'd make a nice article for the magazine!

We're a long way from justifying a £20K restoration on a standard early Lux, but there does seem to be a move towards less cars but more interest, and the rarer versions being seen as the last of the breed instead of the value of their parts.

This would still probably not be an "economical" restoration if the new owner wasn't in the trade, but it shows that we're getting closer every year to that tipping-point where saving them is a better option than breaking. [:)]

Hi Paul, I'll be happy to do an article on the car once completed. It is not going back to standard as the car was "bastardised" by the previous owner removing many of the unique Turbo S parts.

Luckily the shell complete with interior, glass, engine and electrics etc. were all bought for three figures not four so the outlay has not been to much initially. [:)]

nice work, I looked at this one as it was worth saving but I didn't have the time to do the work so bought one that was more complete shortly after!

will need to find the original pic to remind me how bad it looked!

Is it being returned to Silver Rose spec?

Afraid not, it is going to be a fast road/occasional track car with KW suspension and a tuned Turbo engine. Interior will be black with sport front seats fitted but no rear seats.

Colour is also going to change but not 100% sure what he has decided on yet (it will be a Porsche colour)

It was never THAT bad. It wasn't that long ago it was running (though roughly) and entirely complete.

I have the burgundy cs steering wheel from it. It was the first bit taken off. Steve got it then passed it on to me. Very nice it is too!
