944 wannabe

Hi Guys.
I'm liking the idea of joining the world of Porsche. And I'm really liking the 944. Firstly, because of values (lol) and secondly, because they seem undervalued.
I'm fairly certain on what model/spec I'm after.
A 944 S2 manual. 3 ltr, coupe, pas and removable sunroof.
Like the idea of a convertible but I don't think they'd be as practical, plus does handling suffer?
Needs lots of history and been very well looked after. Slight custom isn't a problem.
If anyone has or knows of a good one. Please let me know.
Advice on things to look out for would also be appreciated. Karl

Hi Karl, S2 is a good choice, arguably the peak of the 944 range (and many of us would argue just that [:D]). All are manual and PAS, and I've never seen a UK S2 without a sunroof. Cabs are lovely, but won't handle as well or be as practical: the coupe boot is surprisingly useable esp. with the seats folded. Any S2 will have the same issues as any other 944 (and any other old car). The only real rust problems are the sills, which rot from the inside so get an internal view through the vent in the b-pillar, and the area around the rear suspension and seatbelt mounting point underneath. Wing lower edges, boot wells, windscreen surround etc. can rust, but on a tidy car won't be too bad to repair. Just factor in that a car needing even moderate sill work, odd bits of tidying, and a respray, will cost more than the purchase price at a decent workshop. Guards Red fades to chalky pink even though it's a lovely colour to have. Interiors are strong, and most parts available cheap. See the FAQs for suppliers. Mechanically, look for evidence of a clutch change (strong as hell but expensive, and the rubber centre perishes even on low miles cars). Head gaskets are failing more often now, and brake and fuel lines shouldn't be the originals. S2 calipers corrode, which can cost to fix if it's really bad. The cambelt is 4 years 48K miles max, and the 16V cars should show a timing chain change in the history. Most cars seem to have good engines and gearboxes, but being well built even cars with good history might be ready for suspension work, and can feel less than tight to drive, as they go on forever on the original parts. I'm sure others will have more to add, but I do know of what sounds like a really nice S2 coming on the market that should be posted here soon. If not, PM me or call, and I'll put you in touch. :)

Hi. Paul.

Thanks for the full reply.

Lots of good, useful points.

Small point.... are all sunroofs the big removable type? (That is what I want)

Agree like the red, but looks terrible when they fade.

I would definitely be interested in a car that has had the points/issues you mention attended to.

I want to enjoy it not spend months fixing it! Lol.

Will pm for contact info.

Thanks again. Karl.

Bellaboots' car is available and perhaps one of the cleanest examples around and in a remarkable rare colour. I really doubt you would find a nicer looking or better condition S2 and it has a great history file to match. If you want the best... send me pm.

Didn't know Rob's was for sale, I'd add worth a look!

Hi. Couple of people have contacted me with very nice cars.

I don't want to say how much I'm looking to spend (as asking prices tend to be that amount. Lol)

But I would say don't need to be buying a concourse/show car condition.

I'm after a very nice, well maintained and sorted car.

Thanks guys. K.

Just to add to the comments already given....if you can, try to take someone who knows these cars well, with you when viewing, preferably someone who owns an S2 although any 944 owner would be better than none....there are some great people on this forum I'm sure that someone if not too far away from you would be happy to assist.

BTW welcome to the forum Karl

regards

Pete

Bellaboots' car? Direct, or through a trader?

Just sayin'.

You know this....

>NodsEnthusiastically< Oh yes, I certainly do .... and wondered whether it needed pointing out. As I said, just saying .... [;)]

If you find an S2 close to me (East London) then I'd be more than happy to go an eyeball it for you for some beer tokens; I suspect I can spot a good one (or a duffer) after all these years.

Oli.

Well now you come to mention it, so it does. Good spot there.

Certain other things come to mind as well, although more to do with my expectations of how I go about doing things and how this seems to differ to other people's modus operandi. Perhaps it's just me being weird though, eh?

Live and let live and all that and usually I couldn't care less, but there's a trader punting cars and another parts on here that I wouldn't go near...
