944s...

was it not originally a Triumph engine with genes going back to the 1940s? (Roadster, TR1, etc.)

Genetically maybe but its success (for which it won a host of design awards) was to run 16 cylinders from one cam. The cam lobes operated directly on 8 valves and actuated rockers for the other 8. Cant be certain if the head was retained for the 99 turbo`s (very laggy)

Ah! Like the one from the Dolomite sprint! I heard (another rumour) that the original idea was to have put two of those on the Stag engine...

Well I think the story of the Stag typifies the rediculous situation the british car industry was in in the '60 which ultimately lead to it's demise. Apparently the Stag used a V8 that was cobbled together from two 4 cylinder engines based on the engine in the Dolomite Sprint, which was a pretty crappy engine to begin with (although my dad had a Dolomite Sprint and loved it depsipte it's many mechanical shortfalls. But basically this meant the engine in the Stag was as crappy as the engine in the Dolomite Sprint x2. The frustating thing about this is that Triumph had at its disposal the Rover v8 but didn't use it.

16v SAAB heads have 2 cams driven by a chain that runs inside the engine. This makes the head fairly long (it looks as big as on S2/968). The chain for the cams is at the back next to the bulkhead, the chain that drives power into the gearbox is at the front (longitudinal mounted engine canted over just like 944)

I think I might be closing in on a couple of examples. Can anyone tell me whether an S2 can be fitted with an off-the-shelf front strut brace? I have looked about and the usual suspects do not seem to list one, and therefore should I assume that an S2 which has one has been 'interfered with?'

No problem at all. Essential Styling are a UK based supplier for KLA spherical bearing top mounts and strut braces that bolt straight on the S2. I have both on mine and the strut brace has the essential rod adjustment to set preload. ISTR that the S is a special case because of its inlet manifold but S2/968 not so much of a problem.

Thanks Neil, I had a look at one yesterday and it had a brace, but looked a bit ****ed about, hence my thought. I had looked at Sparco's website and they didn't seem to list one for an S2.

Porscheshop appear to do them...

And they also do a Sparco one apparently...
