964 3.6 Turbo - Mint green

ORIGINAL: Andrew M Bonner

Nick

It was a similar position for me not so very long ago. My first Porker was an '89 SC and I loved her. She meant more to me than anything at the time....then I got married and had to change my outward perspectives; or at least in front the missus!

Porsches are in your blood by the sounds of things, I look forward to the day; hopefully in the not too distant future that you are telling us about your 3.3 or 3.6. Keep focused on your aspirations mate, and like me they will one day be a reality.

All the best mate.

Cheers Andy [:D]

I promise you the day I pick up one of these beauties it will be splashed all over this forum [;)]

Take care

Andrew,
If i remember correctly, there was only 2 turbos supplied in the UK,in Mint Green. The one you have there, and me and my dad owned the other one.Ours had two tone interior, and a sports exhaust. It didnt half used to pop and bang on the over run.We only had it a short period of time, and sold it due to my fathers ill health. We bought it from Glenvarigil at the time, now Porsche centre Glasgow.Would you believe we dont have any photographs of that car.Im sure it was a 93 L reg car,and we owned from 93 - 94.Keep hold of it mate, its a very special car.Regards, SIMON.

I can think of few people that would love to track down the other 'minty'. Mark Sumpter (Paragongb.com) is currently researching where/if other RHD like car may be. He sdid seem to suspect there may have been another, but nobody nows exactly if/where/and what became of it; (Norway was one suggestion but I think that's the one on the 964 register - different colour?)
What a shame no pictures exist of the period you owned yours, they would have been really worth seeing.
If by some chance you or your family ever turn up anything picture wise, please scan and post them to me,

Regards

Steve,

Sorry for the delay in getting back, needed time to study your comments closely.

I am in the process of developing a strategy for minty over the winter months, so cannot confirm much about what she needs to have attended to; too early. I think Porsche Reading will be getting a visit soon however as I would like to interrogate them about the possibility of them having picture archives of the car at Erls Crt, whilst I'm there I think I may ask to chat to 'Vinny'.

Miracledetail will also be getting a call in the next few months as like Maritime Blue, minty does have couple of blemishes.

My first thought of the mods 'maritime' had undergone prior to your purchase.......she is a very low mileage car for her years and would it be fair to assume that major parts would not have been worn out?, does it follow that previous owners have sought to improve the set-up for a specific purpose?..(track use maybe?) Prior to talking to the experts I cannot find much I would immediately seek to conserve/restore/replace on minty. What was your impression of the car when you studied her at Paragon? Being brutally honest, I am very glad you chose 'Maritime' as I got the car I had always dreamed of owning and had been tracking down for over 2 years.

Did the refurb' to the speedlines mean you lost the lettering, (speedline for Porsche)? Now you've done the improvements I am really looking forward to seeing her.

Good luck with your planned trip to Oulton Park on 4 November, are you taking the CGT? (white?, green?, orange?, black?, silver?) A meet when you have a less busy diary would be great.

Regards

Tim

It would be great to meet up with you and other 964 owners. Whilst Cornbury House is quite trip for me, on a good weather day it would be nice to venture up to PCGB/HQ. My business is specialist new build construction/restoration of historic buildings throughout the South and I'm committed to several 'key' project at the moment, so the 2nd Nov is not good for me, on another occasion you're on !

Regards

Hi Andrew

From the paperwork that came with Maritime, it would seem she had only a few mods. She's had a non standard exhaust fitted (which is nicely done, and sounds lovely), a K&N air filter, 1 bar boost spring, H&R springs (now removed), a three spoke Porsche aftermarket steering wheel (now replaced) and a rather nice metallic gearknob. So overall, nothing too extensive.

I am glad we both ended up with the cars we wanted - I suspect yours is more original, and the provenance is rather special, but I do prefer the blue to the green - very much a personal choice!

I have had the Speedline etching renewed as part of the refurbishment of the wheels. It does not look as good as an original wheel, but then the refurb cost is somewhat less than buying new wheels!

As for Oulton, well it rather depends on the weather. If the weather is not too English, I'll be taking my rather crazy Caterham CSR 260, otherwise it will be the Manthey K410 Mark II GT3. Sadly, I cannot get insurance for the Carrera GT (silver) on track, and so it is just not worth the risk at anywhere other than a "super safe" circuit like Bedford (where I have driven the car).

Kind regards

Steve

Steve,

I am finding that 'minty' could also be referred to as the 'marmite car'...you either like it or you don't, there's no in between. Why do I like it so much?............well I went to the '93 Earls Court Motor Show (aged 25) and saw the car hung on the dummy race track at 45 degrees and drained of her fluids; it made quite an impression! Later I saw it on Top Gear and knew nothing of the mint green limited numbers produced, or indeed the total limited number of 83 UK - RHD's.

After a bad R.T.A 13 yrs ago I stopped the 'bike' obsession and got into Porsches. In 2006 I decided to do a little research on 'minty' only to be firmly 'put off' by the statistical likelihood of finding it / one. A daily search since '06 resulted in a few good cars being found, ('Northway' having the one of best which went to Ireland). Then I saw your car which was to be sold, imagine my surprise when I went on Paragon's website to find they had two, and the other was 'minty'; you could have blown me down with a feather!

The rest as they say his history; or history in the making? So that's my story.

You have a Caterham! That sounds like hair raising fun. My neighbor has the R500 (don't think it has the Cosworth Engine though?) he scares me in it - particularly in the wet - WOW!!; much faster than my Ducati.

Took your advice and registered with Paul at miracledetail. Will be seeking his help over the winter months on improving the paint condition.

PS - Would be good to know where/who did the etching on your speedlines, mine too have been refurbished and have lost this detail.

You have what seems to be the perfect collection, 965T, GT3 and track day nutter car...you should be featured in the "what's in your garage"; if you haven't already been?

Good luck with the 'English weather at Oulton Pk.

Regards

Andrew,

I thought the accepted wisdom was that there were only 42 3.6 Turbos produced in RHD - and not all of those came to the UK. I suspect you'll find that it's a little rarer than you think.

You really must come to one of our 964 meets - probably in the New Year now.

Dave

Hi Dave,

You see what happens when you 'spin off at the mouth' about figures you haven't checked for a while, you make an arse of yourself. The good thing though, I have people with better memories and eminently more knowledge on this subject to remind me of the real facts...thank god for this forum!

Looking forward to meeting up with all 964 owners at the recognised meets just as soon as the weather is conducive to venturing out again; probably '09.

Kind Regards [;)]

That's a great story!

Like you I used to be a biker; I rode for about 10 years, but finally gave up when driving cars just took up all my leisure time (I started track driving, and then racing), and so I just wasn't riding enough to feel relaxed. But I did so love riding - I ran a Blackbird for 3 years, and then an early Aprillia RSV Mille, which was just fantastic. I also think becoming a rider made me a better driver (as many people say), and so driving a car like a Caterham now is less scary than it might have been. That said, 500 bhp /tonne and a wet road still demands respect!

To your question on the Speedline etching - I know that Porsche Reading outsourced the refurbishment work, but to whom I do not know. You could ask Andy Keywood at Porsche Reading as he organised all the work for me (top bloke).

You are right that I am very lucky to have access to the cars that I have; I've worked hard for 20 years and now have the very good fortune to be able to enjoy my passion - and although I enjoy other marques, Porsche is easily my favourite! I am also a member of a driving Club (HPC) (not to be confused with a car club like P1), which gives me a chance to enjoy driving my cars with some great drivers and good friends; I get almost as much pleasure out of seeing other Club member enjoy driving my cars as I do driving them myself.

Kind regards

Steve

Steve,

Good luck with the works by Paul Dalton this Friday / Saturday. Looking forward to seeing Paul's pics when completed.

Hi Andy,

Certainly was tidy, it was a top dollar purchase from Paragon (1997) and worth every penny. I remember arriving to collect it to find 4 nice new tyres fitted, without charge, and was not expecting. So the some of the comments about things they have missed surprise me....

I don't think it made it as far as the register, tried a couple of times with little response.

993tt does handle quite differently - 4wd - Not a handful but things do happen a wee bit sooner.....[:D]

Do you do the annual pilgrimage to La Sarthe?

Martyn.

Hi Martyn,

The Circuit de la Sarthe. My experience, oddly enough is none vehicular. Since 2005 in the early cycling season, the circuit is opened up for the annual short road bicycle racing stage. It is organised by the UCI Europe Tour and as an ex' pro-elite road cyclist I watched David Millar win there in 2001; last year the Tour expert Thomas Voeckler won the event.

The idea of going with 'my new purchase' has not occurred to me, until now. I am planning a few things next year in Europe (spa, hockenheim) so maybe that could go on the list of things to do. Is there a web page for the event? Would be good to travel down with a few Porsche owners from the UK. [:)]

Did you get your '64 serviced regularly a Paragon?

Hi Simon

Thanks for the comments. Your car looks awesome in Mint Green, have never seen a 993 in mint before.

Sometimes you get to wondering if there is life on another planet....stay with me on this one! maybe we are not alone, maybe there is another Andy Bonner living a similar / same life in another far away galaxy, also driving a mint green Porsche for example.

Well now I know where he his. His name is actually Simon and he's living in the UK.

Check out my 40th party picture from September this year, attached...... [:D]

Now that was a little 'freaky', but funny! to think that within a month two 40th celebrations unconnected have Mint Green cakes with 911 variants.
My wife's comment was 'Oh, so there are others like you!'
Well I guess all I can add is "What an exceedingly good looking cake" [:D]

Martyn,

'I'm in' this year. Have had rather a busy couple of months so have put off planning / paying for the '09 season 'till early December.

Le Mans is a must in '09 - providing I haven't left it too late? so I hope to see you on 106 in June. Other Euro' plans at this stage are : Spa, Nordschleife circuit, Circuit des Remparts / Angouleme.

If I were to consider getting Grandstand Seats where would you suggest; or indeed would you not bother??

Regards
